    Interesting.

I'm currently in the early stages of writing a novel. I'm a white male. I want one of the main characters to be a black woman. It's a period piece (early 20th century, southern USA), so I'm also struggling with the use of a "forbidden" racial epithet in some of the dialogue.

Given today's climate, I'm scared that this will give publishers a reason to reject me. I'm also worried about the potential backlash that could come from the "mis-characterization" of race. On the other hand, I would like to include a little bit of diversity (all the other characters are white) to connect with a wider audience.

I feel like I'm screwed if I do and screwed if I don't. A really precarious and downright silly situation.

In the end, the only way I will succeed is to remain true to my own creation. I must speak without censorship in order to maintain authenticity as an artist. The chips fall where they may.

All goes back to this: does the artist create art as a cathartic expression, thereby serving himself? Or does the artist create art specifically for mass consumption, making compromises in the original vision?

    Rock and a hard place.

  2. As everyone said, they look pretty similar, so maybe the seller's error was accidental.  Not an excuse of course, that's why "A copy" and "B copy" were invented.

The 2nd copy seems (from back cover pic) to have a small impact ding near bottom of spine.  I'd guess 7.0 and 6.5, but probably Im being too critical, and the centering on both is exceptional for this book.

  3. Awesome contest Mike, thank you.

That Tec getting a 5.5 has to be the poster child for why people who sell CGC comics say "no returns on CGC."   If I bought it w/o seeing the back cover I'd simply destroy it and buy another copy somewhere (and strike the seller off my 'trust' list); and having seen the back, still can't imagine how it ever could rate better than a 4.0.  Rusted staple stain and water staining, pretty ugly.

Fun times, thanks for all the players who participated too.

I considered 7.5 on the Captain Marvel, but went with 8.0 anyway.

I called the NM 98 an 8.5 as well.

Me too on the NM (I ended up guessing 8.0 - in my PM to Mike I made my first comment - "Tough call on the NM98, want to say 8.5, but can't get past that dog ear. ")

And me too on the CM, my gut said 7.5 and ended up at 8.5 because those spots on back might've been foxing and not staining.  The rest were 'normal' defects.

Have book in hand. It seems to be “faded” evenly on front and  back so perhaps it’s a low-ink situation. Regardless it’s mine now and it will do. Can’t wait to free it from slab, read it then put in Mylar.

When I got my ASM 1 within a day it was cracked out and had again achieved comicness, the way it was born and lived and meant to be and will die, if I have any say.
