  1. Black blankets are dirty and they piling, they need to be cleaned but the press operator running the press doesn't wanna shut the press down cause then he'll have to do work and the press may not get up and running right after a shutdown, The idea is to print as much as you can with as little waste and downtime as possible.

  7. Web = the paper that runs through the press Yes, you need hydraulic oil to run a press
  8. Oil dripping on the web while the press is running. I've seen worse. Also there's a lot of yellow ink missing on the page as well. Could have been close to a start up copy

  10. Everything is going up, Even the slightest whiff of a movie/tv show and the book takes off
  11. It's not better simply because it's Silver Age
  12. There is a course that Sell My Comics.com put out that isn't too bad actually. They'll steer you in the right direction, however are you going to take their course and be able to open up shop next week? No. They don't show you how to use a tacking iron and they don't show you how to press moderns or how to press books with inserts in them. All that comes with experience and trial and error. It's still much better than 99% of anything else that's on the market. Some things they show I don't agree with (i.e temperature they use, amount of time in the hydration chamber) Defiantly Joey was right when he told me a few years ago "Less is more" . I don't think we'll be able to stop all the bad information out there, people that are doing amateur pressing are usually on a budget and either don't have or don't want to pay for a Seal press, so a $100 t shirt press and some youtube videos is "good enough" to get by. However anyone can put a book in a press and make it look better, but if they run into a problem, how are they gonna fix it? I know Joey has said he's had to fix many books people screwed up on.
  13. What cracks me up if when they start stuffing all kinds of cardboard in the book....middle, last page, front page, one covering an insert, another piece of the other side of the insert, placed on top of a metal plate. Then when they press it, they jump up and down that the insert didn't press an indent into the back cover, but what they did do was press a line along the whole length of the spine! Then make a youtube video on how to press comics.
  14. Exactly, These FB guys really make my blood boil when I see them taking and using bad advice. It's almost like trying to teach someone without a driver's license how to drive, and are now Uber drivers.
  15. This book isn't faded. It's missing red and yellow ink...If you walk down to a running printing press and shut off the impressions of any unit, it won't print that color anymore, it's usually done if they are having a problem, they should have thrown these copies out but sometimes they get missed and put on the skid and shipped.
  16. It's called "Scumming" meaning the printing plate didn't come completely clean, usually the press operator or the assistant will raise the water to help clean that plate up.
  17. No, But he could hold down the lid and lift the arm up instead of reaching under it. He had good pressure on it before he started adding more. More isn't better.
  18. Wrong materials, wrong technique just wrong everything. He says to use metal sheets, like so many other rookies. Why? Because people like him think you need the flip the book over so the book will press the other side! And with the metal plate, you won't have to do that...This is like telling someone that you need to flip over your turkey while it's in the oven, so the bottom will cook. Yes, He's a hack
  19. T Shirt press people buy for $100 on Amazon/eBay are complete junk, they are cheaply made and the metal plate has a texture on it, it's not smooth like the Seal style presses. People usually use the wrong silicone release paper which has a texture on it as well which can imprint into the comic itself causing "pebbling" in the grader notes. All in all, To do pressing correctly and safely...Don't watch youtube videos or join pressing FB groups..They are hacks! Especially, Don't listen to anything KaptainMyke has to teach, don't care how many 9.8's he says he gets, he's another hack. Find someone that does it for a living (if they are nice enough to be willing to teach) even if you have to pay them 5K, it's worth it in the end, or go through the months/years of trial and error, Press, submit, make corrections, rinse and repeat. That's how I learned.
