  1. So one of the lots I won resulted in clapping from the audience. I think this means I have either arrived, or overpaid Took down two of the lots I had my eye on. And now the post-auction "should have bid more" is setting in. I do find it somewhat odd watching the auctioneer run every lot just under the low estimate, which I assume is the reserve. If you are bidding via phone and not watching this you could get coaxed into a bid thinking you are actually bidding against others and not a reserve.
  2. What number is yours? I have tried to collect images of as many of these as I can find online. So much variation in the color scheme (and effort).
  3. It is the View Recent Offers on Sold Items button located under the Green Make an Offer button on closed listings for which the new owner is actively participating. For some reason I never noticed it. On the first page of listings, which granted only goes back to Sept 11 (but there are still MANY offers listed here) I only see one accepted. In fact, there are 160 Rejected, 39 Pending, and 1 Accepted offer in the comic category since Sept 11.
  4. And doesn't persistence actually make it easier to keep the piece. The more people ask, the more likely I am NOT to sell it because of the (stupid, maybe) psychology of owning something other people want.
  5. Geez, even further destroying lack of faith in the system. I can't tell you how many times I have thought about putting an offer in but feel the entire process is fruitless so don't bother.
  6. On the topic of fielding offers, I just discovered the button on Heritage that allows you to view all offers made within the comic category. The number of accepted offers was low. In fact, I saw only 1 in my quick glance and that was at a loss for the seller (oddly enough).
  7. I would suggest releasing the catalog sooner as well. As is, we get teased for a month and then have 3 weeks to partake of the entire offering. And to be honest sometimes I need more than 3 weeks to get finds together through sales and what have you. I supposed it does build hype but I would be lying if I didn't find it somewhat frustrating.
  8. Easy # 1 for me, FWIW. I would also be sure to maintain the size of the black mat exposed in option 1. Option 2's black mat is too thin IMO.
  9. I recently witnessed a conversation unfold on FB about a piece I have owned for 20 years. It was humorous to realize that so much new blood had entered the market that few knew I had it. The old guard (who are largely detached) know, of course. During this conversation someone posted that they heard of who owned it and described the piece as being in a "profound black hole collection." Of course, I didn't post to this thread I found the wording amusing, however. Furthering muddying the waters, although I do buy and sell quite a bit there are certain pieces that I would never sell pretty much ever under any circumstances because they basically define my core identity as a collector. These are pieces that if lost to theft I would beat the bushes to find (insurance money is irrelevant) or if lost to fire might kill the collecting virus in me for good. I imagine we all may have 1-2 pieces in our collections like this. So while my collection is not a blackhole, certain pieces I own have fallen into one. In addition, as one ages and your income increases, the difference between FMV and what makes your wallet smile also increases. So I could 10x or even 50x my money on this piece and not even be tempted.
  10. Same thing just happened to me. I didn't know what to make of it. I thought at first the piece was FS, but it was not. Just a random "you have a piece by this artist, so do I". Totally unsure what the angle was.
  11. I noticed the same on CAF. I posted a piece to crickets. I then sell the piece and the new owner posts it to multiple positive comments. Not a huge deal, but definitely a head scratcher. I don't follow users and just search by artist or title to see what is new. Perhaps I am using the site wrong.
  12. And this is just counting the comic art market. I know the one piece I bid on (and lost) I did so half-heartedly because I am saving my money for the Sept Prop Store auction (for movie art not comic OA).
  13. Also be sure to account for the Fedex customs shenanigans on the import back to the US, which will generate a paper trail for use tax.
  14. Crickets. I always liked the Illustration auctions for the eclectic mix of styles and subjects depicted throughout. That said, I always found McQuarrie's art to look rather dead. Given bare scribbles can get mid to high 4 figures I suspect the estimate is well researched here. I also find most of his work falls into the "Uncanny Valley" of my Star Wars eyes. Still should be fund to watch.
  15. I miss this blog being updated regularly...
  16. Was this the piece sold on eBay last week? I am no expert on EQ publishing history but I think most of the originals were donated with a few of the Marvel reprint covers selling on Heritage. These were 10x15.
  17. No comment on Tim Sale but I did/do think I can paint better than that 75k Magic artwork that sold at HA two weeks ago. My first thought was that it looked like I tried to paint my mother. To the initial question posed, I am one of those people who have lived this experience of wishing the masses "got it" for my entire collecting life. It has taken years to just give in to my tastes, which many may consider bad. But really I cannot make myself spend money on something I just don't appreciate, whether its an investment or not. I am absolutely awful at making investment based decisions, to the point that people should email me before making a big purchase to see if I like the item. If I do it will be flat for 15 years. I recently started getting interested in the prop world, but not 3D screen used stuff which I find shoddily made and boring. Nah, I go for the concept art. I am a huge Tolkien fan, but that's Bakshi not Jackson. I like Frazetta's watercolors more than his oils. Kirby, Lord of Light or 2001 for me please. Ploog, no comic art, thank you only his movie work. You get the point I have never understood the superhero genre and have no interest in it. But if I did, it would be some D tier character who was about to get a spin-off movie, until I got involved and the project would be shelved. I am in my mid 40s and really have no connection to the horror and fantasy of he late 60s and 70s, but have a much stronger interest in the Warren and Studio crowd than any Marvel bronze age material. But to see me beaming when I show off my stuff to the rare visitor tells the real story of what matters. I have fully accepted that Heritage will one day get a call from my wife.
  18. Its very common, and of course you don't want anything that shows London Bridge on your wall, totally bleak and uninspired. Still, great piece.
  19. For 99 dollars for handpainted artwork, a great piece and nice size. But damn that is not the London Bridge Heritage.
  20. My understanding was that they wouldn't accept cc payments over 2500, perhaps I has misread their rules.
  21. I keep wanting to make an offer on all four of these at a reasonable price, but can never bring myself to ask for the disappointment of rejection.
  22. Not sure, but I do wish we could put Wanted lists in some kind of signature at the bottom of your posts.
  23. They also stuck a Williamson Return of the Jedi page in a Sunday auction that brought 15k. Sunday vs event doesn't seem to matter really, well maybe for memorabilia lot 873 on Sunday night.
  24. I wonder if the Indy prices aren't based on two things: 1) the recent HA auction at 25k+ for the Last Crusade prelim (very prelim), 2) the 75k "asking" price for the Atari game box artwork (apparently badly damaged as well). I would also add that the rendering of Indy on that 140k box art is superb, better than Amsel's IMO.
