Bought a GA book on ebay a few weeks back. The book had a detailed description of the condition (so I thought) and photos of the front and back of the book. It was described as a VG+ book and the defects listed were in line with that.
Book arrived, I opened it & took it out of the bag/board to inspect the book. I noted the chipping on interior pages was far more extensive than expressed (and had me worried about brittleness) and the book had a spine split from the bottom up 2+".
So I packed it up and returned (following ebay steps) it noting that the defects were greater than anticipated based on the description.
Now the guy has opened a case against me saying that upon return, the book's centerfold is now loose (I honestly dont remember if the centerfold was loose when I got it, but it wouldnt surprise me considering the whole book was spine split nearly to the staple.
What are the odds that I win this dispute and dont have to take back this sub-par book?
Im honestly more annoyed about the sellers tone talking about how the buyer needs to understand that golden age books are delicate and need to be handled with care... Im like WHAT?!?! I know how to handle GA books....
anyway... just had to blow off the steam. I know ebay typically sides with the buyer in these cases, but I'd rather not get stuck eating a couple hundred buck of a bad seller...
Buying raw books is a nightmare. I believe you and hope they don't go against you on this one. I would stay away from non slabbed books on the internet and only buy them in person after inspection. Good luck.

That's a fair comment, and I would hope that anyone who has been around the block a few times would know quite soon when to back off. I doubt any regulars here would rock up with pens on someone's break or at an after show party/pub.
There have been quite a few times over the years though where I would have missed out without pens e.g. over an hour before a convention starts when bumping into an artist who was drawing that day anyway and was happy to kill time, or from an artist that had only intended to sell prints, a quiet signature line that turns into a sketch op. These weren't situations where I was expecting a "commission" level piece.
More often though there have been a occasions where artists have only brought a few sharpies and even basic sketches look a lot better and last better when done with nicer pens. Some artists I know produce vastly different sketches if they only have sharpies to hand e.g you might just get their "go to" headshot. I don't think there is any harm in politely asking for something other than sharpie, especially if it is on a sketch jam.
You could even find yourself in a situation where the artist hasn't brought something big/decent enough to fill in large areas of black or finds that a pen is running dry.
Brilliant !!!

I don't wanna ruin anybody's fond memories, but that "bike" is killing me. The proportions, the angle, wondering what is going on with the perspective... is GR's butt back hear the seat, or is he like super small and standing up sorta, or... I just can't.
Also what is Black Widow doing? Compositionally-speaking, and otherwise? Is it made completely out of Dr. Doom's legs? It's one of those comic-isms, where you can tell the artist isn't super strong at drawing motorcycles. Lets put him on the book about a guy who rides a motorcycle everywhere.
At 7 Years old, I wouldn't have given half a hoot about any of this.
Agreed—my fondness remains but my dollars will stay in my pocket. Numerous attempted fixes by the artists I’m sure at the pencil stage. That’s the inference by HA anyways.

One of my favorite comics at seven years of age. Great image of GR flying off the cover on his bike. I wonder artistically if they tried to do too much. The supporting characters come off a bit stiff? Well I still love it the way I did at 7.

Sweet tat, bro!
I prolly would have gone with Excelsior or somethin if it was me, but Subby's always been a bit "off".

That's about the least offensive STAN or anybody signature I've seen. I generally hate that stuff, to the point of passing on things sometimes...but not this time. No biggie imo.
It does look like Subby ran into a few sailors, drank too much and got Stan's named tattooed on his arm. Hey could've been worse-- had it placed on his lower back.

1982 GL by Kane and I love it.

Thought I'd post this because it should be "he's no Sal Buscema" proof.

I still don’t get this random inability to score runs. How the hell does this team of all manage to have their top 5 of rotation go 1/27?! Just murdering folks for weeks, then blown out like a candle when needed.
The Braves curse man....
Chipper Jones - Smoltz-Maddux in the 90's now swept at home with new monsters like Freddie and Acuna.....The Met's have put together a great second half run. Their abysmal bullpen and first half of baseball left them with a huge hill to climb. 32 games left it feels like they have to finish 23-9 to squeak in the playoff.

It’s neat to see what thought collectors put into themes. My goal once was a page from every top Spider-Man artist.
you can see how challenging that might be.
nice idea for a thread. Personally I enjoy the freedom of not trying to fit everything into a theme but I also enjoy the clever ways folks make it happen.

Iconic but ain't no Sal.
Looks like he's about to rip a good cry, just like JB's Surfer.
I knew a comment like this was coming but still cracked me up. Cheers ! !

I printed the image of it and pasted it onto a college journal I had to submit at the end of semester. The professor said my work was fairly standard but the unsolicited cover added to my notebook put me over the top. Again thank you Jack Kirby.
