IMO the 375 was the one to go for. If you collected comics in that era you probably had or still have this book in a long box being the 30th Anniversary gold foil cover, not to mention it's regarded as one of if not thee best spidey vs venom battle issue of that era and has a direct tie into, or I should say leads into Venom Lethal Protector #1. The 375 pages as mentioned in the description for the auction just never come up and are held close to the chest, only 1 has been offered ever on Heritage, which was another panel page, not a splash, sold last year for $36k. This splash you're talking about was from 374, also coveted and part of the same battle, Heritage has only had 2 pages which both sold between $38-40k, one was returned and resold for $32k after frame was removed and found the page was adhered to a foamcore, which caused the page to ripple throughout.

On a side note, those bottom panels feature Anne Weying's first appearance freeing Peter's parents from Venom, she later becomes She-Venom in the comics and the Venom movies, played by Michelle Williams, not sure it adds value but still pretty cool.

The 379 I think was still a good deal and part of Maximum Carnage arc, great images, but more of a dialogue type of page and no battle, which is what collectors seem to gravitate to. Overall, great deals for both IMO, especially the 375.

Great breakdown. I make note of the higher prices being paid in contrast to five short years ago. In that sense the ask and get for these ASM pages have shot up.

Still, what you say is true. I think the buyers did very well. I'm positive that Bagley/Emberlin ASM pages are ones that will be untouchable in the near future. They don't come up very often publicly or privately.

I really like Bagley on ASM, as he was on the book when I started buying comics again after a 7 year hiatus.

All I'll say is I did my best and really thought I was going to win it. Someone set up a very high proxy bid heading into the final 3 minute clock, which began around 18k if I remember correctly? Every time I bid I was immediately outbid until this amount with the bp, the next bid wou;d've put me over $40k, which in retrospect in my eyes was probably worth it being so historic and Torch's earliest known illustration, but I figured to hold more dry powder for other lots. Still pisses me off but congrats to whoever put in their high bid and won it. Just makes you think how high that max bid was haha.

I wish we could know:-) That's the beauty and horror of online bidding. Good on you for trying. It's an important piece of history.

I bought a Freak Brothers page this past year.  Multiple reasons that I wanted one and why this one was the page I wanted.  What I did not expect was how phenomenal the art is in person.  First it's oversize, but the level of detail really makes you stare at it.

    IMG_8189.jpeg

I've seen them in person also. Agree with you about how much detail is in these pages. Very impressive in person.

I have a lot of respect for this underground art. I had a relative who used to go to a head shop and buy "supplies" during the seventies >:(.....

Not a big fan of that, but I was keen to read through Zot, Freak Brothers, and whatever books he bought from that shop when I was 8-10 years of age.

I have a keen nostalgic care for this type of art, but the dollars I have stay pointed at Marvel material. I hope the interest and value stay strong in this market. It's a part of our history.

  5. I've been tracking Bagley since 2019. Interior pages went from $1k-2k to these results in 2024. Of course it doesn't hurt that Venom is on both pages :) There was a venom splash that went for $40k 😢

These results give me hope that I can find a few more Bagley pages before they really get up there in value.

Holy s#*+. Where to start? Okay, why is that Warren piece not a published cover? The Vampy, by Gulacy (I'm a huge admirer of his work) I love the yin/yang Silver Strike touches, The menacing forces behind a lithe, come hither and die deliciously Vampy and the Crusader shielded man who looks like he's courageously out of his element. Impressive.

Now..... John Buscema. Prelim..... to a book every true comic fan has seen and read through. I love the colored in heroes,(is that acrylic crayon?) The penciled Spidey is John's very impressive take that we saw in Silver Surfer 15. A truly worthy piece of art that simultaneously connects to the history of how a  legend sees the heroes through the stages of concept to finish.

This might be the prelim of the prelim, but its for a memorable cover, so I'll take it. It's either Romita (who did the final) or Buscema (who drew on the other side of the board).

I swear to you, I would've been able to identify that prelim without any context or google search. A memorable SS cover to say the least.

  8. A few observations:

I really enjoyed Neil jumping in during the auction.

The efforts of bidders on the SM 48 page to demoralize each other late in the call were palpable in the moment.

we're going turtle slow late in the auction.

    Moebius: great

    Miracle Man 16: great result

Jon J Muth piece feels like a bargain.

  9. I'm surprised how much I'm geeking out just listening to Neil talk about the pieces. "This is a drawing that hung on my daughters wall for many years."

It's making want to hit the bid button without considering my available funds. It was great to see that SM 75 splash sell. It's just a story SM lovers will always remember and never forget.

    Thanks.

Do you know approx/estimated current amount to get a % of the buyer's fee?

I don't know the exact dollar amount to actually get a piece. But I think the rarer, hard to find piece will give you more leverage. The great pieces draw eyes and dollars to the other items auctioned.

I think 5% on the buyers end is the most you can claw back. I think I own one piece I could get away with that if I auctioned it. Rarified air.

What do you think about the Avengers 1 page that went for 110K on clink?

I'm a collector that saw the #1 pages offered $2-4k Sorry if it's tiring to hear that. It just blows me away. I would say the IM centered page collected a pretty Penny here. No such thing as over paid anymore. Unless, you're one of the numerous speculators that have bought at auction last four years than bring a page back too fast to auction again.

The price, though staggering, "feels" in line with perceived battle.

This one is even more flippy (is that a thing?)  I traded it during a CAF Live, and then the guy on the end of it worked his own deal with it, and then don't know, but it ended up in the first listing you shared.  So it's got a sad moving story.  Hopefully it finds it's forever home soon as it's a nice enough page!

I think the drops Felix orchestrates for his artists is brilliant. The model works for him. I'm not sure many other dealers can do it like Felix. The problem for me is when I heard Felix was dropping a whole book, I just didn't have time to figure out how the drop works. I didn't get a page from this great series. I wish you well. I probably made a huge mistake after those drops by posting a thread on CGC specifically praising the art. Conjecture over valuations soared, and as I tried to buy a page in the $4500 range, people didn't want to sell or I was outpaced by other collectors with deep pockets.

I wish you well. I think I need to see one of the SSB pages go through Heritage to properly see what the market will value the pages at. You were smart (and maybe lucky?) to get this page. Good luck.

So, my last two OA deals with Europe. 1st one shipped from Germany (dhl then via usps) lost! 2nd one shipped by me to Belgium (usps then via fedex) lost! 2 for 2 lost! I have never before had a package lost to or from overseas in 30 years of collecting. What gives? Are others experiencing a breakdown of these systems?

I heard that Overseas thiefs have figured out our packaging. They are lifting the art, probably with inside help. I don't mean to disparage in totality the overseas shipping professionals. I'm so not confident that I won't ship art overseas for private sales or auctions like ebay. Its different with people I know, but I can't take the stress of holding my breath and hoping nothing goes wrong.

I hope this is not the case with your art. Hopefully this is clerical and be tracked down and set on course. Best of luck, I'm rooting for you.

Mike Grell was at a small con with great guests in Baytown, TX - Eastern Rim Comic Con. He had this piece and the print made from it. On the CAF in the gallery of Georg Schell there are two more versions. I don't know the story of how it went from my preliminary to the print, but I've asked Georg, but haven't heard back. In any case, here they are. Click the image to go to the correct CAF page.

Alex, when you hear something please let us know. That "prelim" is better than the completed efforts of many an artist. Of course we are talking about the great Mike Grell, so noy so surprising!
