Yeah sounds about right. If it were a stronger page I could see it possibly over 125. I was going over the 3 Kirby/Ditko Spidey/Torch related issues, this being the larger of the 3 issues (18 pages) vs FF Annual 1 (6) & ASM 8 backup (6), so only 30 pages to work with in total. Furthermore a handful of the pages actually don't have spidey to keep in mind. Also, without question the premium pages go for the 1st meeting from FF Annual 1...

BTW- The title page to FF Annual 1 sold on Clink in '22, for right under $300k (still a deal in my eyes, I bid, but should've gone stronger a little stronger)... though still the title page, but the large title stat took away a lot of art, 2 smaller spidey images (1 back turned), nice FF group shot, but arguably one of the weaker of the 6 pages as far as content and art was concerned. With that said, I still think this page should go in or around the $100k range, more if 2 people really want a Kirby / Ditko example, IMO is the best combination!

Speaking of which if anyone has any of the FF Annual 1 pages and are willing to sell, please let me know. :)

I agree with you that the FF Annual 1 page was a deal for the buyer. Appreciate your breakdown of the number of early  Kirby/Ditko pages.

  2. I have no empirical evidence only intuition. I'm 56 years young, so I've seen a thing or two. Enough so that I have an outstanding offer from State Farm Insurance to be a claims adjuster lol

I remember the year 1987 hanging out at Page After Page Comics and debating the value of the Mile High copy of Action Comics 1. The story we heard was a guy walked in with a briefcase with $300k, but his offer to buy was rejected.

This stunned us. Surely the refusal was a mistake. $300k in 1987 was a lot of money. Later I thought about it and told myself, if I owned the book, and didn't need money, I wouldn't sell either.

My gut is telling me that we enjoyed a renaissance due to unusual factors related to the gloomy, doomsday Covid fear days. And now a lot of the heat has cooled.

Perhaps a good deal of mid and lower tier material has lost its HOT value. I'm holding my best work. I believe there's a second wave that's coming in the next ten years that will explode the values of the best examples of OA that will distance the 2020-2022 period by a good amount.

    Agree.

    Disagree.

It's just my personal opinion, my gut.

    what say you?

If we are being honest, most people (not all) will talk endlessly about how they wouldn’t deal with someone because of their past history but when the rubber hits the road they would buy from Hitler if the price was only 2x market value and comment on how much they liked his mustache when they bought the piece from him.  When someone says “hey didn’t Hitler have that for sell?” they will quickly reply “really?  They guy I bought it from must have bought it from him, wish I had known”

It's occurred to me that there are collectors who did buy stolen, pillaged European art from H***er. In spite of all the horrors he unleashed on the world, there are those who, to this day have stolen artwork hidden away in their collections.

I'll stop here. I'd like to believe we will all obey our moral compass, but collecting in and of its nature brings about green eyed monsters within our souls. What are you willing to live with?

Let your conscience be your guide.

Sorry not to sway away from Kirby's DC 70's goodness and not sure if anyone's noted this one, but this looks to be one of the most expensive Kirby pieces that's come to market in a while, or at least that's come up at auction from what I can remember over the last year, of course with the exception of the Cap 5 splash and Cap 59 pages?...

ST Annual 2 Kirby Pencils & Ditko inks, twice-up Spidey / Torch page from the Jon Berk collection...This one should be interesting, projected $100k+, over/under?

Which auction was this slated for?

Surprised this has not been brought up yet . This one must be truly impressive in person. Too early to provide estimates?

Being unpublished I think will temper the bidding. It's one of the best Spidey pinups by the late great Ditko though.

My guess is $395,000. I'll be surprised if it goes way over, but not surprised if it goes lower.

if it were a published pinup from the era of 1-37 I'd have it at $673,012.49.

So here's a thought. If grapeape wins this, is there a way to make this available to Marvel so it could be published in Amazing Spider-Man?

How about a tribute issue ASM #37 B with this pinup used on either cover or title splash, or center of comic! A 56 year old boy can dream:-)

Interesting.  How does one price a Ditko Spidey page that features almost every key character from the Spidey-verse at that time, with one notable exception?

The dealer that has (had) this tried to. The ask was + $100,000

I only interact with one other sealed record collector (he is also very much pro-sticker) so I don't know what the consensus is on the matter. But the fact that TiG doesn't downgrade for the stickers is great in my book - I'll just keep using them over VMG as long as their sticker policy matches my collecting interest!

I agree, the stickers on old albums are great, even better than the '80s/'90s era stickers you see on albums and presumably videogames.

Like here's my copy of The Beatles' Revolver:

And how about this holiday 1963 price sticker from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan: :luhv: (just sent both of these albums in for grading)

Great albums: Stating the obvious I guess.

OMG I think the dealers who told me those Monica pages I bought would go for 10X what I paid after the movie came out may have lied to me

Somebody (joking I hope) in reference to this  failed waken film, suggested that Hollywood do a waken version of Dirty Harry. lol

i pissed my pants and snorted unsweetened ice tea all over my keyboard when I heard that. It's time for these freaks to understand we've had enough. No more messaging, no virtue signaling, we want entertainment dang it!!!!

Sky Masters was simply lightning in a bottle. The strip was written by two brothers, Dave and Richard Wood (they are the "Wood" of Kirby and Wood credited on the strip) and penciled by Jack Kirby with inks initially by the amazing Wally Wood. The comic strip was a "quasi-realistic" space adventure that was a little before it's time.

The space race was just beginning and Sky Masters was gone before the Russians got Yuri Gagarin into orbit. Although promising at the start, Kirby had agreed to pay a portion of his royalties to someone else. He tried to fight that arrangement, but lost in court. Shortly before that decision, Wally left, presumably for more money. Kirby inked himself for a while, and then had Richard Ayers take over the inking chores. But, by then his heart wasn't in the strip and by February of 1961 it was over.

I suppose we should be happy about that because if it was successful, Kirby would have had no reason to find himself back in comics to help start the Marvel Universe.

Still, when they were cooking, they were cooking. This is a one panel strip from very early in the run. As a friend told me, there are other Sky Masters out there, but none better.

As always, feel free to look around.

Brilliant example, the G O A T of Sky Masters strips. Has it all. So glad you brought this here to remind us how incredibly important these strips were (are). (thumbsu

  10. It sure paid to beat the crowd. I really like Scott's work. This one is great. There is a commission page thread on the OA boards here. You should maybe move this over there, or repost this where other collectors post their commissions. Very sweet Cap there!

    The Official Commission Collecting Thread

it's on the very first OA page.

Damn, I should've done my due diligence before purchasing from him on CAF. I purchased four pages from him over a month ago, said he shipped and provided me with a bad tracking number, and now he's gone radio silent, though he posted new pages for sale a couple weeks ago. I naively assumed that since he's been a member of CAF for so many years and has a premium account, it would be a smooth(ish) transaction. I unfortunately made the mistake of using Friends and Family with PayPal as well. Anyone have suggestions?

Never use friends and family on PayPal for a business transaction. You are not covered if you get scammed.

I would leave negative comments on his CAF page explaining the situation. I hope that might get him to respond to you.
