  1. ......loses ability to enter museums in future. I personally have no problem with the card below. I'm not calling for any bans. It does beg the question why Earthbind? WotC (Hasbro) making decisions that appear agenda driven. I still haven't heard a defensible argument for removing Earthbind. I don't want to keep this thread going if you've made up your mind. Earthbind is beautiful art. It should have been included with the 30th Anniversary Edition Set ( which apparently is a 100% fail in the eyes of the consumer but you can find that info on your own. STAND UP FOR ART. Giving in becomes easy. Grapeape's opinion. Thank you to every single contributor on this thread, I don't want to be right, I just want to make sure we get it right as free human beings.
  2. Very deceptive. Infers that Romita was inspired by Kane, then in the body of his description he tries to cover himself and with poorly worded text says Kane inspired by Romita. The ask price $60 000 is absurd. You're walking into a jackpot of trouble if you take this at face value and buy. GIL KANE: (ORIG, 11X17 SPIDERMAN DRAWING ,DRAWN IN THE 1970,S, INSPIRED AMAZING SPIDERMAN # 100 COVER THAT WAS DRAWN BY (JOHN ROMITA SR), THE INTERIOR ARTWORK WAS BY GIL KANE, KANE WAS GOING TO DO THE COVER HIMSELF (KANE TOOK ROMITA,S COVER TO DO THIS HOMAGE TO THIS CLASSIC ICONIC COVER (NOTE: WAS DRAWN ON BACK OF THIS 11X17 OR MORE POSTER OF GIL KANE HIMSELF AND THE DRAWING CAME FROM HIS PERSONAL COLLECTION (SPIDERMAN FIGURE WAS DRAWN BY GIL KANE HIMSELF ON BACK OF THIS POSTER) THE REST IS COMIC BOOK HISTORY
  3. Michael I think he's just hoping for better buying opportunities. I'm with you that the OA market is still robust. Lee B. also mentioned about the 20 lots that were listed and disappeared after listing might be a collector wanting to spread out his consignments to maximize earning potential. They weren't necessarily withdrawn for fear of taking losses in a depressed value market. It's a peculiar spot to be in right? On the one hand we want the pieces in our collection to continue trending upwards in value. On the other we hope for signs of weakness in the market that may generate good buying opportunities. Having our cake and eating it too. Not sure we can have both but it's the dream.
  4. Thanks G.A.tor it's very important. to fully insure the art. It's amazing to me how many collectors spend four and five figures on a page and then balk at the cost of insurance. Since you mentioned it, I would just recommend everyone review PayPal terms of service and make sure you are up to date on all current policies.
  5. We don't have to imagine a universe, we have our past history and the Comics Code Authority. No comic magazine shall use the words "horror" or "terror" in its title. All scenes of horror, excessive bloodshed, gory or gruesome crimes, depravity, lust, sadism, masochism shall not be permitted. All lurid, unsavory, gruesome illustrations shall be eliminated. So are we fighting not about what is lurid or offensive, but who is blamed for putting on the restrictions? Is some art ok because it's aligned with our beliefs and the rest should be removed because it does not align? Thanks for making your point. It's food for thought.
  6. You seem lost here so I'll type slower. The Earthbind card is NOT included in Magic: The Gathering 30th Anniversary Edition. Pulling it up from MTG archives is not the same. That decision to not reprint the card is based on the desire not to OFFEND. You're point that the Earthbind is out of play has nothing to do with why WOTC did not include it in the 30th Anniversary. I'll take the hit that maybe I didn't make it clear. My interest is in Original Art. The reason it wasn't included in the 30th anniversary is they don't want to take heat for reissuing "offensive" material. Thats the death of artistic expression. Can you speak to that?
  7. The target audience doesn't matter. WotC making an attempt to 💰 grab that doesn't matter. The card was not left out of the 30th anniversary edition because it's "unplayable." It was left out because WotC finds Earthbind offensive in these enlightened times. I'm interested in what people think about censoring art. Those are the takes I'm looking for on this OA thread.
  8. The Earthbind card is another one that's fairly easy to guess why it won't appear in Magic: The Gathering 30th Anniversary Edition. The artwork on the card is overtly sexual, with a scantily-clad fairy being tied up in a suggestive position. Earthbind was one of the cards that weren't reprinted in Fourth Edition back in '95, along with other cards that featured controversial artwork, such as depictions of religious imagery and violence -- Scott Baird ScreenRant October 6, 2022
  9. 🛑 This is NOT an MTG thread misplaced in the art section. This is a take on censorship supported by corporations and offended ilk deciding what is art and what is inappropriate. I am not an MTG player but I have a strong interest in the art created to make the cards. *Wizards (Wizards of the Coast)said it had removed six Beta cards - Contract from Below, Darkpact, Demonic Attorney, Earthbind, Weakness and Crusade - from the set due to failing to meet “modern standards”, as well as changing flavour text. Crusade was previously among cards banned in 2020 as the result of being racist and “culturally offensive”. Where are we going with censorship in the future? Take this from any position you want. Mine is simple. That's a killer looking card that many people admire, although I believe it had very little power in the MTG tournament world. The power it seems had to do with what the image might suggest to the person viewing it. Ultimately the actual power lay in the hands of the sh**birds at WOTC who used their power to ax it and those offended by it who made WOTC tremble. They sure didn't ban this card for the text. Speculators are happy as a very affordable card is being held for ransom now. Sorry if you needed that one to complete a cube 😢 There's a four letter word for what is happening here and it starts with W. Better start speaking up say I before INGSOC completes their mission. * Please focus your comments from the POV of censorship of art. Arguing functionality of card or power of card is irrelevant. Particularly when WotC did not reprint this specific card to reflect modern times (not offend)
  10. It's not that. Thank you for bringing this to the thread's attention. It's because we have another thread I think started by Glen Gold where most fakes or suspected shenanigan dealers have the spotlight thrown on them. CGC should have pinned it to the top of the first page but it's not. I can't remember the thread name anybody? Something like "why you shouldn't buy this "Kirby."
  11. Wait. No one is jumping on this "Basquiat" for $3150 broken down into 24 easy payments? This painting was was🚩 found as you see it, as is, no modification or cleaning has been done to it. Has 🚩not been taken to anyone for authentication and therefore is 🚩sold “in the school/ manner of the artist. If the buyer wants to have it authenticated, that is solely up to them, but 🚩I can’t claim anything because no paperwork or provenance accompanied the painting. 🚩Be aware of this before you buy it.
  12. Hoovering up the A+ art..... J L aka the Vacuum. I'm begging you don't bring Kirby into the mix or things could really get confusing.
  13. That can be our new thread Mitch.Suggestions on ways to get Terry Austin to Become a CGC Boardie and Post His Collection!! We could help choose his thumb nail photo.
  14. Some really nice pieces in here. That UK cover by Hannigan is so cool. Have a great show Glen and to all who attend be safe and have fun!!!
  15. This is one of my favorite threads. If anyone else wants to contribute their illustrations I'd love to see more!
  16. Hard to believe I've never been to a Con in my own place of origin New York. Maybe before the good Lord calls me home. I second Rick's request for photos of art and the artists. I wish all who attend a safe and fun time at the Con.
  17. That's actually right on target. Your wording is more accurate for what would have to take place That's what I was wondering. Would HA set a guaranteed minimum at $2M for Wolverine's first appearance?
  18. My friend I'm not trying to be a wise guy here. The answer is whatever someone is willing to pay for it if and when it ever resurfaces for sale. The collector who obtained it is a very smart guy. He didn't get trapped by "what is FMV?" like so many collectors who hyperventilate. He went out and did what he had to do and paid an an unheard of price to get Wolverine's first appearance. The buyer is a trend setter not follower. He's given me advice a few times also which I greatly appreciate. Won for $657,250 we know some of the cabal members and dealers have chimed in that the cover to IH 181 could likely go for $5,000,000 or more. So if Tom ever gets tired of IH 180 First SNIKT page I'd imagine he'd expect to get something within that range. I know I would. $2,000,000? Now, what really is interesting to me is what would the two Wolverine Concept Drawings go for if they come up for auction. If anyone wants to see them go to CAF and search Vince Oliva. A few of his pieces are in this current HA auction. Drawn by John Romita Sr. these are indeed the very first drawings ever of Wolverine. I posted Vince's descriptions but I think it's better if you go to his CAF site on your own to see the drawings. WOLVERINE DRAWINGS BY JOHN ROMITA, 1974. BLUE PENCIL ON THIN VELUM. SIGNED AND NOTED BY ROMITA. THE BACK SIDE OF SHEET #2. Yes, this is the FIRST drawing(s) ever of Wolverine (Also see the accompanied drawings). After creating the images with blue pencil on the front of the velum sheet, Romita traced the Wolverine figure on the back side, making a third Wolverine drawing. The detail on the original "Front Side" was a bit rough, as Romita was fleshing out the idea. Upon turning the page over, he traced a clean line copy (in reverse) with the same blue pencil. The image is much clearer. WOLVERINE DRAWINGS BY JOHN ROMITA, 1974. BLUE PENCIL ON THIN VELUM. SIGNED AND NOTED BY ROMITA. Yes, this is the FIRST drawing(s) ever of Wolverine (Also see the accompanied drawing). As Art Director for Marvel Comics, it was Romita's assignment to create the visual appearance of the new character (villain) that was written into the --script to battle the Hulk in issue #180 - 181. Called the "Wolverine", Romita envisioned him as small in stature, but ferocious by nature. The pair of velum sheets depict 2 head shots (front and side view), and two full figure shots (action and standing poses). I bought these directly from Romita many years ago. He told me that the head shots were the first drawings, followed by the full figure drawings. He made the notation on the head shots as he signed both sheets. I remember hesitating on making the purchase, as the drawings were no where near the quality of the Spider-Man pages that I was buying from him at the time. Of course, I'm glad that I did decide to buy them. What are these valued at? You could put a number on them but honestly they have to come to auction to find the real value. The last page of Hulk 180 is the first published appearance of the Wolverine. These two concept drawings preceded that published page. I love seeing Wolverine come to life under the hands of Romita. Go look at them for yourself.
  19. International @ 25% BP for awhile now at HA I'm pretty certain.
  20. Not if the sky is falling... actually I agree with you that it could approach those numbers. This piece is properly recession proof. I don't anticipate this lot number suffering despite current economic downturns.
  21. I've had five artists proofs from way back that I got directly from the artist but only recently thought about their significance in the MTG community. Here's Mishras Workshop signed by Kaja. If you like this and it spurs conversation I'll post the other cards. I'm 95% an original comic art guy but naturally I'm drawn to MTG in large part thanks to the cool art work on the cards. I appreciate a chance to hear from true MTG collectors.
