  1. We have a well known art dealer here who bought a $5,000 piece of art this year from a CAF member in Europe. The seller asked for friends and family only and the dealer, seeing the seller had transacted a number of sales via CAF without incident, complied. Weeks went by and no art. Many of us tried to help by emailing and leaving comments on the dead beat sellers CAF gallery. Sadly that SOB just kept the money and the art. Alright enough caution ⛔️ signs and speed bumps. Be careful out there.
  2. Friends and Family should be used for actual friends or family. You have zero recourse if the transaction goes awry. It doesn't have to be the seller deliberately ripping you off.The package could go to the wrong house, get lost or stolen. Paypal will not help you if use friends and family. I know legit dealers and collectors who have used FF to exchange costs of trade differences etc. But I've made a number of private buys using PayPal the last two years and I've paid what's now 3.49% (2.99 in 2021) of the amount + .49 in 2022 on every transaction. I simply won't risk losing all my money on a situation gone bad. If anyone tells you they won't take FF commercial because of fees you can go to PayPal calculator and type in the amount. It will tell you from a sellers point of view if you want $1000 you have to ask for $$1036.67. So that means you just use the commercial (not FF) option and send them $1036.67. On their end they'll only get $1000 the difference goes to PayPal. if you use commercial and don't account for the fees the seller only gets $964.61. That's a big reason why sellers don't want you to use anything other than FF. Then of course you wouldn't be crazy to think a business transaction cloaked as friends and family might be to avoid showing a transaction. There's a big difference between me loaning or gifting $1000 to Aunt May vs. sending J Jonah Jameson $1000 friends and family for a income generating transaction.
  3. When you do get something done please come back and post pictures. I appreciate you asking the question and taking advice so gracefully. It helps other collectors. I wish you lots of luck whatever you decide to do.
  4. If it is Lee that would be meaningful. But I don't think the fact that the page is personalized is nearly as meaningful as the quality of content on the Sunday + color. That's what's going to drive it to a new high. If you're right that purchase 🔨 would blow past the Peanuts Sunday of $300+. That's where I see this one going. $350+ $70 juice $$420,000. +500 or 600k would be something but Idk. I love the strip so much that if I had the money I would consider breaching that mark to get it. I don't have the 💰 but somebody does. Will they spend it?
  5. I think the only cringe factor is that the gift was personalized. It would be easier for me to sell a Rolex that Watterson gifted me then a C&H that he personalized to me. But the overriding factor is ownership. If it's mine I can do whatever I want with it.
  6. I think sometimes when you do your best to convince the mob that they don't have to spend 5 figures to get quality artwork, maybe you should include your proof like this beauty. Money well spent my friend.
  7. Really pleased with Thomas Pitilli here. I commissioned Thomas to draw inspiration from Batman the Animated Series and the episode Joker's Favor when Harley Quinn and Joker first meet. I suggested a few bread crumbs but otherwise left the execution to his imagination. We agreed that Bruce Timm is an inspiration but wanted the Pitilli style to make it his own artistic vision. I'm very pleased with the results.
  8. Love it penciled. Love it inked. Spider-Man 🕷 Menace 😂
  9. +1 Keith for sure worked on some of the best titles and is part of many of my favorite storylines. FF 197-200 and ASM 200 come to mind. * drdonaldblake Get on the waitlist or inquire if any pieces done commission style already exist without a home. You might find one that feels like it was drawn especially for you!
  10. I got my 1st comment from Marcus Wai post H8GateMuscleManthumbnailphotouglyBad2022 discussion. It rocked!!!! In fact so far it's the only comment on what I think is a really rad piece of art. That's what Marcus brings to the table. He pointed out cool things on the art that I saw but didn't point out to leave the comment section fresh for thoughts. He was respectful and positive. We need to name an award for positive contributions to the OA hobby from a collector. I'd like to nominate Marcus Wai for the first annual CGC/CAF MuscleMan of Peace Award. 🥇
  11. Vince is a great guy. We talked for mamy years when I moved to So Cal. He told me about selling one of his ASM 39 pages to a dealer for a staggering amount of cash for that time to a dealer we all know at the SDCC. Vince has a great eye for art. The pieces already mentioned but also he had a great DD vs Spider-Man page by Gene Colan. I’m glad he held on to most of his art. Always a friendly guy His stuff is going to go for 💰 and I’m very happy for him. He’s one of the good guys. 🍇 🦍
  12. Please don't have him ink the pencils on the original board. Especially if it's a published cover. thethedew gave solid advice. you might not have time before the convention but talk to the artist. It can be done and you could frame them side by side. Best of luck. The reason why it's a bad idea is your having changes made to what was a finished piece of art is as far as the artist was concerned. Especially if it's published. Preserve it the way it is so you can see the wonderful pencils for a lifetime.
  13. You don't have to be confused. Legitimate dealers and breakers help reach those highlights that you mentioned. I'm jabbing at the scammers (the sports card world is crawling with them) who are a threat for someone moving in to that market for diversification of their portfolio. Also all the cards and memorabilia you mentioned would be out of reach for 99% of us here on the board. It was a joke and more of a caution then a Recommend Don't Buy. I have MTG cards, sports cards and Comic trading cards. I might even have a few Pokemon cards that I'd never admit publicly :-). I don't think the sky is falling as we know since the beginning of pre pandemic the wealth of sports memorabilia was estimated @ $5.4 billion (Forbes 2018) Do ya Dip is a reference to what's wrong with the Sports card world. I'm surprised you got your back up on this one??? Investors who diversify and find out they bought trimmed cards, repackaged wax cards, resealed boxes, authenticated $3.5M Pokemon sealed box that was full of GI Joe's.... and on and on won't take comfort in the fact that a few guys are raking in the dough. Okay so for the record my buddy tth2 and I are on the same side I'm guessing in so far as I don't want to lose value in the cards I have. tth2 could be right. Market Decipher reports the wealth of sports memorabilia last year had grown to $26 Billion and predicts that within ten years it will grow to $227 billion. (Bobby Caina Calvan Associated Press 8/28/2022.) I'm not a sky is falling guy you all know that. grape ape is always 1) Trust but verify the FMV and health of whatever market I'm investing in 2) Expose potential dangers I'm always going to point out that for every $12.6M BB card there's also scammers looking to manipulate the market and rip off new collectors. OK. Enough this is an OA thread. What would a good piece of art (value) be to exchange for a 86 Fleer MJ rookie card? OK seriously tth2 I'm only warning collectors. The thread was about cutting back because of the gut punch stock market losses. It's natural to look for other places to keep money safe or grow. These worlds of memorabilia and OA have a lot in common. Fueled by passion for nostalgia. Rife with FOMO. Just be careful out there.
  14. I was gonna diversify into sports cards until I heard these words. “Do ya dip Daniel?”
  15. C’mon everybody..... to the bus!!!!!!!! Comments are welcome
  16. CAF is a place I’ve gone for years to share some of my art and take in the cool art shared by other members. How seriously do you guys take it when you leave a comment? Sometimes more is less and less is more. I get a kick out of some of the things people write. My favorite post of late came from Felix who wrote simply (Worthy.) As many of you have probably seen there’s a thread out there that has exhaustively explored a CAF members reasons for commenting so many times on member galleries. So this thread is here to say..... Marcus rocks!!! Comments are most likely appreciated by most members who post art. How do you guys use the comment section?
