Start by buying small purchases. Buy art from artists or artist representatives only. Many times artworks are not signed/autographed. Or could be forged. Some artists sign art simply because a fan put it in front of them. Doesn’t always mean they did significant work or any work at all. Signatures in and of them selves mean virtually nothing as proof of authenticity. COA’s as well virtually useless. Over time you must study and learn the artwork of artists you like. In the meantime buying from artists and their reps is the best way to see examples you might like to purchase safely.
