But they don't deserve a premium. The people who would pay more deserve to have some sense smacked into them. It's embarassing that comic collectors are this stupid.
Except who are you to say what gets a premium or not? The market determines prices, not you. If you feel like selling Image newsstands for a buck a piece, send me a pm and I'll gladly oblige you.

I've mentioned in the moderns heating up on Ebay about Image newsstands and others have brought up other company newsstand editions such as Malibu and Now. I've been buying any issues I find of Image and Malibu that I can find with barcodes. I believe there will be a market for them in the future and there is some activity on many newsstand versions. Print runs are scarce and if there is a difference, like paper quality and/or price differences, the collectors who need to own everything will jump on these issues. That also goes for the Marvel and DC. Books need not be from the 2000s to have activity. 1990s saw many lower print runs overall and that meant newsstands were even sparser. Throwing a buck or two at these books is no biggie, and I'm sure I'll get my return on them, even if it's not a fortune. I see several people on here seem to only justify buying/selling so called variants if there is a larger reward, meaning hundreds of dollars. To me, if I can buy something for $1 and get $10 for it, that's fine with me. 10x return on an investment is great.

I think having customers find a gem digging through $1-3 boxes is good for business. It gets people to spend money and visit your shop or booth or whatever knowing there is a chance they will find a winner. If you cherry pick out everything and price them high, you'll probably lose the interest of your customers. I know many dealers and even myself when I was one, who put some semi valuable items mixed in the cheaper priced stuff just to peak the interest of buyers. As for 1st appearances, there are tons and tons of 1st appearances that mean absolutely nothing. That is until the character shows up in a show or movie. You can't keep everything. Plus if you bought 14k books, I'm sure you made a ton of money overall even if you didn't get to pick out some of the more valuable stuff and left them in the $1-3 boxes.

Wow, VF and they sold this high. Though quoting the census is a bit bous as CGC has only started recognizing Image NS for the past year or so.
-
I find some stuff constantly cheap for $1 or less. I think most dealers, especially small ones that do it part time, either don't know or don't care. I just picked up a Shadowhawk #1 newsstand. I've seen people post them here but never came across it before yesterday. Got it for $2 I think, but may have gotten my sub discount with it.

My guess is that the Whitmans didn't have Mark Jewelers because they weren't sent to Army bases. At least that's what I think. I do think that every book on that list has a Gold Key non-catalog MJ version though. It's just a matter of tracking them down. I think they're going to be rather rare. It seems one seller has the issues I have confirmed for the most part and he's asking a slight premium I think. Didn't really look at the prices, but they seemed to run from $20-25 for the most part.

I noticed that I was missing 2 issues from the list and edited it a few minutes ago.

Guess no one noticed these or don't care.

I had a subscription to Deathstroke that lasted to the end and when #58 was supposed to arrive, they sent me a copy of something else because #58 had been allocated and not enough were printed to fill subscriptions. I have never seen a copy in person anywhere for sale -- and I've looked.
That sucks. I never had a subscription for comics, just magazines.

Mine is #67 and is written in pen. Comic is the size of a Golden Age book. His website doesn't work. I'm trying the email. Will see if it comes back error or he replies.

Yeah, good luck. I can't find anything either.
Do you know if any other issues were ever released? Thanks

The thing you have to think about is whether or not there will be a polybag crease on the cover. Getting 9.8 could be tougher, though pressing may remove the the indent.

I personally wouldn't consider pedigrees different versions. They're the same version from specific collections.

I have found a true MJ variation with Gold Key books. As most of you know, books with MJ inserts are not variations when it comes to CGC graded comics and they are not separated in the census. "Mark Jewelers Insert" is written on the label text, but there is no way to distinguish how many actual copies that have MJ inserts exist. But there are now some examples of specific Gold Key issues where there will be separate listings that have Mark Jewelers Variant on the label and will be separated out on the census. The exact issues are those in the mid-1970s which include a 16 page Kenner Fun Catalog. At the top of the front cover it actually states this and the comic has 24 pages instead of 16. The variation comic replaces the 16 page catalog with the MJ insert and Gold Key removed the fun catalog reference from the top of the front cover. I'm including the link on GCD that has both covers, Uncle Scrooge #109 as an example. The majority of the listings that are CONFIRMED you can do a search on Ebay and see for yourself.

Below is the list of comics that I have found that has the catalogs. Whitman versions to my knowledge also have catalogs. I cannot confirm any Whitman versions without a catalog and with the MJ insert. If anyone can help out with photos of any of these issues below that does not have the catalog and instead has the MJ insert, I'd like to try and verify everything on the list. Also, if I miss any issues with catalogs on my list here, let me know and I'll add them. I considered starting a separate thread but decided not to.

The reason everyone honed in on Betty #8 is because of the way Betty is drawn and all that is shown on the cover of an Archie comic. The Veronica is quite tame compared to The Betty.
I agree, but again there are none available.

It's funny that people honed in on the Betty #8, but the Veronica #171 is pretty much nowhere to be found. The few I saw sold on Ebay went rather cheap, but were probably snatched up quickly because the sellers didn't know what they had. I'd guess this book should be a minimum of $10.

Funny thing is the title of the thread is books you can't find in the wild and we all are posting books we've found in the wild.

Are these hard to find in the wild? I see lots of Darkhawk, though I rarely see the last few issues.
That is the JC Penny #5 Darkhawk. It is rather rare. The regular direct version with the Cap head in the UPC is common.

The only ones I've seen for sale have been newsstand editions. My copy is also a newsstand copy so I wonder if there is a direct edition for this book.

I get the idea that newsstand copies are supposed to be harder to find than direct edition copies, but would this apply to Archie titles from the 80's and 90's? Just curious about how many comic shop owners ordered Archie titles versus what was available on newsstands. If fewer shops ordered the direct copies wouldn't those be rarer than newsstands?
That may be true, though this issue is impossible to find regardless. Looking at the sold list, 2 copies were sold by the same person. It looks like he actually scanned his and both were newsstand. The other 2 sold used mycomicshop default photo so that doesn't count. 4 copies plus this one. Very tough book overall. I wonder what the total print run was of this book.

I meant the two books in the upper right corner of your second haul picture.
That's still considered volume 1, but Caliber took over. I found almost all the graphic covers.

I have just that one that I found last summer but now I'm on the hunt for issues fifteen and sixteen of volume two.
There is no issue 16 for volume 2.

If you want to talk about non-newsstand items, which has been now for several pages, create another thread. This has gotten way off topic.
