I think that the Covid bubbles will burst this year, but I also think that GA will be less affected than other segments of the hobby. Many crypto investors have pobably cashed out already (at least partially). I doubt many guys were buying comic books with gains that only existed on paper (or in silicon chips?). That would be awfully reckless.

Battle of the Golden Age Sci-fi Series

If we're talking stories, Weird Science and Weird Fantasy would be the top two, hands down. Planet would be a distant third. I'm not sure what would be fourth. Artwork would be a separate issue. -
I guess so, but the pages appear to be nicer. Maybe the pay copy was stored in a different location than the other copies—in a filing cabinet instead of a box in the attic or something like that. It would be nice to see another copy or two turn up. Maybe Jacquet gave some sample copies to someone who saved a couple of them. One can hope. (I'm not sure whether any copies were actually given out at theaters.)

You probably see it reflected in prices if not grades. A slight mis-wrap doesn't bother me, but a crooked cut does. I have passed on quite a few books on my want list because they weren't cut squarely enough. This one bugs me a bit. I don't think I have any others that are that bad, or if I do, the cover design doesn't make it so apparent.

It isn't the grade I would have given it—I'd be below VF on any books with that much writing—but CGC is free to grade to whatever standards they wish. If they get too reckless, their credibility will start to suffer, and then they'll be forced to tighten up (which has happened a couple of times and which I think will probably happen again soon). The Pay Copy is a one-of-a-kind item, so I'm not sure how much the grade will affect the price, anyway. I don't quite understand why CGC is so hard on stains but so easy on writing. To me those are very similar defects in that the cover has been defaced by a foreign substance.

Will this one get snagged by an investor or a collector? What do people think? https://www.ebay.com/itm/304325774196?hash=item46db3acb74:g:wLwAAOSwMm1hZKqR

I agree; then I'd be able to buy more books. I tend to collect off-beat titles that actually could lose most of their value at some point (unlike books featuring the Timely and DC mainstays, which are probably safe bets). If I'm an investor, I must be investing for my next-of-kin. I occasionally sell books that I decide I don't like for whatever reason, but most of my books will stay in my collection till I give up the ghost.

I only have one, and it's comic-book sized. It's one of my widest GA books, but I think it would fit in a GA holder (barely). Do you know whether every issue exists in both formats, or are there some issues that only exist as one or the other? -

I think that some people bid in these auctions thinking, "I'm walking away with this book no matter what," and when two bidders have that same attitude, then you see bizarre results. To me, $11,400 would be a lot of money, but to some people, it's nothing. Some people also mistakenly believe that any price that they pay at auction is reasonable because they're only one increment above somebody else. With a book like that, I would want to see where the third- and fourth-highest bidders stopped bidding; that would give me a better idea of the book's true long-term value. (I'm not sure whether that kind of information is available on the Heritage site the way it is on eBay; if it is, I don't know where to find it.) -

I wouldn't be allowed into the venue, but if I were to go there, maybe some of these affluent collectors would deign to let me lie down in any puddles in their paths so that they wouldn't have to get their Allen Edmonds wing-tip shoes wet. Then maybe they would let me look down into the puddles and see the reflections of the edges of their CGC cases containing their six- and seven-figure books.

I don't doubt it. I remember when the Voldemort Magic Woo Suspense 3 sold for $100K right after Voldemort started slabbing books. I couldn't help but wonder whether that $100K came out of Voldemort's marketing budget. -

True, but I don't think that a Rob Liefeld signature would add much value. -
Anyone else over the Promise Collection?
jimbo_7071 replied to William-James88's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
I know what you mean; I don't think covers are included in the page quality designation. One would hope that tanning of the covers would be mentioned in the graders' notes. The cover stock on a given book may age differently than the newsprint used for that book, so I suppose you could have a book with OWL 10 pages and tanning inside the covers. I've had some Dells with fairly nice pages and VERY dark tanning on the inside covers. I'm not exactly sure why that happens. -

To me, white means OWL 10. (Are you talking about Baxter paper? WAY back when I still collected moderns I had a run of Omega Men, and I think those might have been on Baxter paper.) I know someone is going to chime in that page quality is about suppleness, not color, but from what I've seen, the correlation is extremely high. -

On my last submission (early last year), the grading was tight but the evaluation of page quality was generous on a couple of the books. I know that they relaxed their page-quality standards around the end of 2005; I wonder whether they've done it again. I don't want to crack out the Promise books that I bought—suffice to say that I would not get the same grades on a resubmission—but I might try to pick up an inexpensive raw one at some point so I can check out the page quality for myself.
