Superman Syroco Statue (DC, 1942). Adolph Holstein, a skilled European immigrant woodcarver, founded the Syracuse Ornamental Co. in 1890. Unable to keep up with demand for his intricate carvings, Holstein developed a process to mass-produce replicas of the carvings by compressing a mixture of wood, flour, waxes, and resins into molds. In the 1930s and 1940s, the company changed its name to Syroco Inc. and manufactured a line of novelty items and figurines of popular entertainers, personalities, and comic strip characters, and were sold in roadside souvenir shops. In 1942, Syroco released their most popular and successful figure--SUPERMAN. The Superman statues were not offered for sale; instead, they were a promotional item from DC Comics for Superman comic books to distributors and retailers. And, even more interesting, the production was limited to only 100 pieces, of which only 10-12 of these statues were actually fully painted. The remaining statues were brown with a red logo and cape. Syroco (sometimes referred to as Sirocco) statues are very fragile and are very rarely found unbroken or repaired.

This statue is 5 1/2" tall, and one of the original 10-12 fully-painted figures. It has 2 chips on the cape but otherwise is in great condition. This statue, with its limited original production, is one of the rarest of the vintage Superman collectibles. The original paint on this example that we are offering for sale is much superior to the one that is pictured on the cover of the December, 1991 issue of Comicbook Marketplace magazine with the caption: "Extremely Rare." In the accompanying article entitled "Comic Character Memorabilia," John Snyder refers to the Superman Syroco as "One of the most famous, desirable and rare of all Superman collectibles.”

It looks to me like a cover from a Famous First Edition.

Bingo!!! No one in there right mind would sell a cover/back of a Superman 1 for under 3K hahahaha that would go for easy 40-50k if not more

Another great piece. Not a “badge” but a very large felt patch. In order to obtain it, you already had to be a club member. You then had to get like 10 other kids to sign up and use your name. Also very rare. I believe there are FAR less that copies of Action #1 in existence.

Extremely rare piece and less then12 from what I know

4.5 seems right to me. Structurally the book looks sound. Grader's notes confirm that and even with the partially detached staple the book's biggest issue is major foxing which CGC isn't all that tough on, IMO. Plus it's a mega-key GA so a little bump is to be expected.

Mega key it is. Top 3 book of all comics

Since I put most importance on how a book displays over everything else, it might come down the visual appeal between both covers - in which case might happily take the 0.5 (I loveeee bottom of the barrel grades for books that actually look mid-high grade).

Being possibly the best looking 0.5 out there certainly gives the book a leg up against others in that grade category, so I would value it a better pick up (and once again - it could become a restored/conserved book one day if the back cover is obtained)

Value for wise? Let’s say the .5 Batman 1 nice cover is listed say 110-115k and the restored 6.0 is at 110k would you say the Batman 1 .5 blue grade has a better investment potential then the 6.0 restored extreme grade? Or would that Batman 1 restored 6.0 still push close to the .5 as investment wise?

When it comes to big Golden Age books I would take a complete restored copy over one that was missing hard to replace parts (such as a back cover). If it is just a mangled complete copy that graded 0.5 I would consider that depending on the extent of the defects, as a Universal book can be worked on with proper conservation (or restoration if it makes sense).

What if the cover of say Batman 1 was a 5.0’looking cover and no back pin up but a .5.. Would you still take a Resto 6.0 copy over this one?

Yah the back cover when it’s gone it’s a huge eye sore no doubt

There are always a few that just don't get it and over pay each time there is a major upswing and there will always be some maybe he will get lucky in the long run. But should have known this if he was a long time collector but my guess he is not. In 10 years I can see it been double what he paid maybe more will see.

For the 6.5 to hit 400k let’s say in 10yrs hmmm it could happen but again there is plenty of copies on the market that makes this book not rare. It’s rarer in higher grades in 7.0 and up from 52 copies then declines so time will def tell

My guess in 1-2 years that will be the norm for the grade and he will turn a profit after that. If he holds on for say 5-10 years he should be more than OK in my opinion.

In 5-10 yrs correct he should be ok. But as of now too many copies on the market and not enough collectors to absorb the issues for a high price will keep it level at the prices today Buying in on a 6.5 for 200k is dangerous at this point

What is the going rate for a 6.5 AF15? I know there was a high sale of 225k (always a few buyers that go crazy during a high and get burned) but in the current market I was thinking 150k?

That person who paid 225k for that 6.5 copy is surely having sleepless nights now. It’s going to be a hell of a long wait for that person to ever see a profit on that book.

For sale is one of the toughest, most sought-after Modern books: CGC 8.0 Ultimate Fallout 4 (1st Miles Morales) Newsstand Edition! Very few sales of this book are recorded on GPA and the only two for 2021 are a 9.2 for $7000 back in May of this year and more recently a 5.0 sold for $3000 in September. This copy presents nicely for the grade with a few small spine tics on the front, but the back does have a very small tear along the bottom edge right of the middle, so it's unlikely this would press to a higher grade. Asking $5000 plus shipping to US (flat $40 via UPS or USPS Priority. double-boxed including insurance/signature confirmation) or Canada (price based on buyer's location) only!

    SOLD

No returns, item will be fully insured in the unlikely event any damage occurs.

I have been on the boards randomly buying and selling for over 10 years as well as buying/selling on ebay for over 20 years (ebay ID qburt with over 2000 feedback, IIRC)

Feel free to ask if there is anything I have not covered!

What would a mid grade newsstand copy cost today 5-6k or more judging the rarity in this book..

I'm originally from Windsor, Ontario, so definitely no Gretzky sightings.  I have met a few players over the years: Ted Lindsay, Tie Domi, Lanny McDonald...

For more recent players, I've seen Taylor Hall but no McFavid sightings yet.

Yes. He was an enforcer for the Leafs but what really was interesting about him is when he was fighting he always looked like he was smiling on his wedding day.

    He was one tough dude.

Haha Domi was a midget who more then often got his head kicked in. Especially from Probert who tuned him like a fiddle..

I’m going out on limb but based on the current Spiderman franchise and what has been done with his brand over  the last few years in all media and mediums there is no doubt in my mind he’s the biggest character in comics . That goes for Marvel or DC. He will continue to grow and do better than both Superman and Batman ( not knocking them at all ) but I just feel with Disney/Sony sharing and playing well together and other multiverse Spider characters being huge in their own right , this comic will continue to climb .

To certain deep pockets the GA Tec27 or Action 1 are the comics to have based on rarity and basically launching the comic game but Spiderman has something they don’t. Can’t quite put my finger on it but he’s got it !

There is no other most marketable superhero then Spider-man. Spider-Man is now King Kong of the comic world. This will last a very very long time because the two 9.0 copies of Action 1 are already in the hands of a billionaire and the only way for a AF 15 to be dethroned would be either a 8.5 Action comics 1 or a Tech 27 8.5-9.0. Those odds are very very slim now..
