I thought it was strange that it was lost on you ;)

For my part I let it go once, with the second mention of it I had to say something ;)

    It wasn't, lol!

More to the point, the OP seemed to be dismissing Frazetta's art because he's not a fan of the 'sword and sandal fantasy' type-thang (yeah, it's a nonsense description, which was why I quoted him, exactly) . . . and I was just pointing out that if you're not a fan of the (ahem) 'sword and sandal fantasy' stuff  ;)   there are other genres Frazetta worked in that he should perhaps be exploring.

I think 'sword and sandal' is more along the lines of material set in ancient rome/greece/egypt...   Ben-Hur, Cleopatra, Spartacus, stuff like that.

I believe 'sword and sorcery' is the term here.

And yes Frazetta may be more than 'sword and sorcery' but in fairness, that's really 90% of what he's known for.

I deliberately used the 'sword and sandal fantasy' tag attributed by the poster I was responding to . . . and, yes, I do know the difference . . . which was totally lost on the original poster  ;)

I think for me, it’s simply just I’m not a “sword and sandal fantasy” kind of guy.  Frazetta probably is great, but my eye never lingers on the page long enough to take it in, or to develop an eye for what separates him from his contemporaries

Frazetta wasn't just a 'sword and sandal fantasy' kind of guy . . . he worked in other genres.:

  4. I purchased some artwork from Conrad, from over  here in the UK, quite a while back . . . a Ditko ASM page, a Kirby/Sinnott FF page and a complete book of pre-code Horror.

I always regarded him as a straight-shooter, totally honest and reliable, responding quickly to my enquiries and his art offerings seemed reasonably priced.

Sorry to hear of his passing . . . I always regarded him as one of the good guys amongst dealers.

  5. Well, I actually managed to find sufficient amounts of Vallejo airbrush colours in my paint-box to complete the paint-job of my working copy of The Cyclops from 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD (1959), measuring 15" tall and cast in resin. It's a waterline version, as old one-eye wades into the sea to chase after Sinbad and his motley crew in an early sequence from the movie.  I've also now decided to re-do the two arms as I wasn't quite happy with my first attempt (see photos in which I'm holding the revised arms against the main body). Also included in my photo selection are a shot of the resin-cast body.  I should have the revised Cyclops, with new-improved arms, finished-off sometime next month,  Currently, I'm on to a new Harryhausen project . . .

I think knowing the cover in question would yield more appropriate recommendations.  Otherwise, you might as well search for recreations on CAF and pick an artist on your own.

Gotcha, the Frank Frazetta is very nice.  Are there any other Taschens that I should also look up?  I saw there was an ASM one.  Looks like they sell for lower than MSRP now on ebay... do these typically go down in price as time goes on?

There's a great EC book, ASM, Avengers and Fantastic Four.  Basically, the Marvel series are like reading oversized comic-books (in look and feel) , complete with all house-ads.  Absolutely wonderful stuff that I'd highly recommend!

interesting development , Amazon is admitting the book has been published, but apparently it is sold out and they are not getting any copies. It used to be on pre-order, it no longer is...I believe this could be a sellout and the only place to get it is Bud Plant or someone else. Did anyone ever get a copy of this book from Amazon?

I ordered mine directly from the publisher and received it well within a week.  Taschen are showing this as available.  I try to order things like this directly from the people who produce it, unless I see a better price elsewhere (and with the Frazetta book, I didn't).  Looks like you've had an agonizing wait for nothing on Amazon, Mitch, and there's no excuse for them failing to supply what they've offered . . .

For 30 years I've built a nice little collection on the back of trading.  And before this gets taken out of context, I mean 'fair' trading.  With well over 50 or so trades, only one was sour, and I 'undid' that one.  Good karma and all that.

Short version is, I'm looking for a Twice Up Marvel Splash, Full Page, Kirby pencils (not layouts).  What I am looking to trade?  Other Kirby Art, A+ type stuff (including a bronze Marvel Splash).  Good stuff.

Here are the responses from three Dealers when approached w the idea - keep in mind they had not seen or asked what I had in trade, they only knew what I was inquiring about.

    1) "I'll trade but it has to be WAY in my favor.  WAY in my favor"

    2) "I'll trade but I can't pay you market price, I need room to make some money"

    3) "If I trade you art, I need to raise the value of my art before we begin to cover myself"

    Good lord.

If there is anyone out there left who would like to discuss a trade for your 2X Marvel Kirby Splash page for my 'other' Kirby (trade enough so we are both satisfied)

If so - hit me up via PM here - I get concentration - you get diversification (sell one of the two or three and keep the others etc)

Lastly, for those about to ask, sorry but I am very private and won't be posting anything anyone emails me to look at, or what I have in return.

Just wanted to step out of the shadows for a moment to vent some frustration and make a general appeal to you guys

    LMK

    Mess

Well, unless you actually post the art here that you're looking to trade, it's difficult to say if what you're looking to offer is worthwhile.  (shrug)  And, yeah, I get that you like your privacy but if you want some informed opinions you need to bite the bullet and show what you got.  2c

No dealer I know of is going to trade you like for like.  That might work with other collectors, but dealers work on profit and your proposal needs to be worth pursuing . . . in their favor.

  11. Kinda surprised that I'm the only one here who has actually listed the stuff I voted for (none of my own, I hasten to add . . . I play fair)?

    What did others vote for . . . I'm curious . . . let's compare notes?

Don't be shy . . . even if your own art features heavily in what made the 'final cut' in your own voting choices that guarantees you at least five votes!. . . :baiting:

Well based on Brian's earlier post that he will speak to Bill about fixing it, I'm guessing they didn't want people to vote for their own submissions but assumed people naturally wouldn't try to anyway and so they didn't implement anything to prevent it.

I didn't vote for any of my own art either, just seemed tacky to me.

I'm now waiting for someone to try and justify shilling their own auctions!
