  1. I’m often struck by how many covers just sit there, not jumping out at me, definitely not making me pick it up and flip through it… kinda sad for sure.

BUT on the positive side I keep going to the LCS searching.

Here’s my rough superstar list (your mileage may vary)

    Kirby

    Adams

    Sternako

    BWS

    Byrne

    Miller

    Perez

    Golden

    Art Adams

    Jim Lee

    McFarlane

After Lee and McFarlane, who came along a sparked the comic fans interest?!?

Sure there are new creators that comic art collectors like, but are there names that the general comic fans seek out and seek out everything they create like happened with Byrne and McFarlane… where are the new superstars? It’s been a while.

Stopping cold turkey worked out very well, it forced me to raise capital in ways other than cannibalizing my own collection, ending up 20 years later with much, much more art than I can handle and being impossibly happy too. No regrets, except that I didn’t stop selling even sooner!

    Good tip.

One thing that was a bit difficult to learn for me was - it is ok to gracefully exit long negotiations when you get the feeling your enthusiasm for piece in a deal is started to be taken advantage of a bit too much. When asked for “Just a little more” yet again that was my cue to gracefully part ways from a deal. I had a feeling that I had already given too much and I could have regrets if my previous offer was accepted.

I was happy to give the other guy the better end of the deal. Especially, since I initiated the trade talks. Don’t let the fact you had invested so much time in negotiations cloud your judgement.

Deal or no deal, always be pleasant during the course of trade talks, because for most of us, it is a hobby.

    End of thread drift…

D&D Art by Bill Willingham was insanely interesting to me… why didn’t someone have him draw a D&D comic?!?

It was NOT the Bros. who had it re-inked. It was a private collector, one of the most prominent Starlin collectors of the late-1990s and early-2000s. The collector personally told me he had it re-inked by McLeod.

Severely fading ink really presents the owner with a dilemma, keep it as is and have a piece that appearance is greatly hampered or have it re-inked and have the integrity of the piece greatly diminished.

I think most would keep it as is.  If you aren't cool with the piece's fading ink, perhaps you should pass it by and let someone who wouldn't re-ink it be it's caretaker, BUT I do understand the impulse of trying to fix it.

The original Marvel Graphic Novel #1 Death of Captain Marvel cover by Jim Starlin was re-inked by Bob McLeod back in the early 2000s due to the fading inks. I hope HA includes that information in the description.

not sure how hard it is to get Comiclink to revise their description, but here’s their current description:

DEATH OF CAPTAIN MARVEL COVER - AUCTION BEGINS SOON

1994, New cover for trade paperback printing of Starlin's classic 1982 graphic novel

$20.4K... Another strong result, I think.  I don't recall other covers selling for anywhere near this price (although I do recall $7.2K paid a few years ago for the 1st kiss page)

Original Comic Art:Covers, Terry Moore Strangers in Paradise #1 Cover Original Art (Abstract Studio, 1994)....

To save others the hassle… I went to HA looked up what this is a cover to and it is-

Terry Moore Strangers in Paradise #1 Cover Original Art (Abstract Studio, 1994)....

  6. You wonder if we Bronze age kids, who’s first art love were Byrne, Miller and Perez, aren’t as apt to go hard after the older art of Kirby, Ditko, Adams. As the collectors of silver age art wind it down, you get a bit softer demand for their work.

Maybe ten years from now the Lee, Kieth, McFarlane markets reach their peak as the Byrne, Miller, Perez market softens.

It will definitely shrink departments where writing is involved. Add the AI illustration ability of midjourney and this will be the year you will see AI erode the opportunities of creative professionals.
