  1. The evaporation effect used on the final cover helps it make a bit more sense and add some drama.

I find it an interesting contrast - the horror displayed by the Phantom Stranger getting evaporated and Constantine not giving a rip.

Jae Lee did a good job with the drawing. If the price wasn’t too lofty I would think you’d  like it in your collection… BUT on the flip side, I find if I have to talk myself into the purchase I probably should save that money for something else.

  2. I too should apoligize. After re reading my post it seemed more bitting then it was intended, this should be a place for discussion. I posted in a snarky way that kinda stompped out discussion, my bad.

I stuggle to find the correct my to express my thoughts online without the too much of a hard edge. I'll keep trying to do better.

  3. I’m good with it. Cartoonist are goin cartoon.

Personally, I think it is a bit unreasonable to say I like your exaggerated style except on the neck… that has to be a realistic proportion.

Maybe he do you a new one to kill this thread and stop the critique on the piece… artists just love having their work picked apart in a public forum ; )

It’s a fun quirky style, I’d be happy with it.

  4. Seems as 300 smooth Bristol board is a nice option for pencil as well as ink work. You can pick up the pads at Michael’s or hobby lobby. The higher the number 400 or 500 the more expensive the paper but it seems to except ink a better especially if the artist is using nibs, but prob not necessary if they use markers or pens for inking.

Michael’s has a 11x14 pad that might work nicely for you -

Strathmore 300 Series Bristol Smooth Pad (20 sheets)

I think the 500 series paper is often sold as large single sheets, not as pads. you may would need to cut them down to more manageable sizes.

  5. It's almost go time, good luck today... "The more you bid, the more it's worth."

I'm learning from some of the business types in the hobby. I have my eye on a piece and IF i win this particular piece I'm gonna take it into the shop and make it an "alternative cover" and release the new and improved "alternate cover" in the next auction... CHA CHING!!!!

Shhhh keep this on the DL I already have the graphics mocked up....

  6. Seems as the prices are softening ALMOST enough to get me off the sidelines. I had my finger on the the button for two pages if there weren't a little bidding at the end I would have landed one. With Comiclink you can have more pieces end without a flurry of bidding at the close. If they fell through the cracks - I was in the basement ready to catch em ; )

  7. Wow that was a heck of an interesting article. Thanks for bringing it to our attention … many parallels come to mind when they explain the inter-workings of that fine art world and what is probably going on with our comic art business (seems like it can no longer be called a hobby).

    Thanks Alex!!!

  8. For those interested, Felix Lu interviewed Frank Miller’s art dealer Scott Free, who brought a lot of Dark Knight Returns pages to market. It’s a most interesting listen:

It may answer some of your questions, but as Felix states “many years have passed” so memories may be a bit fuzzy. I know mine would be!

  9. Andy Robbins was a guest on a Felix Comic Art Podcast, at 40 mins in he begins to talk about how he decides what pieces to sell. I think you'll find his thought process interesting and might be a bit helpful to you. If you haven't listened to Felix Lu podcast, then you are in for a treat, it's great!

  10. WOW our hobby's very own Kelvin Mao directed a very good documentry on Dave Stevens. You feel like you really knew who he was at the end of the doc. It is a bit long, however if you are a comic art fan, but you'll enjoy lingering in the world of Dave Stevens for the whole 99 mins!

I watched it on Amazon Prime not sure where else it is streaming. Here a link to the trailer- link

    Great job Kelvin!!!

  11. Brian, guys like you make this hobby fun! Thanks for putting this together, although I won’t be attending, I hope everyone has a great SDCC and takes advantage of these opportunities to reach outside your comfort zone and make new comic art buds. It always nice to hang with fans of the medium and talk shop.
