I post almost everything on CAF, but I do have a piece acquired in my first year of serious OA collecting (2009-2010) that I've always kept for myself. It's an unused pencil cover for a book that made an early impact on me, and when I saw it it provoked an ineffable sense of possibility, the forking paths of comics history--the dream books that might have been. The published cover was by Romita, & it's pretty solid, but I give the edge to Big John.

Dr Doom, of course it’d take an evil genius to land this stellar piece such as this! Pure Big John pencils WOW!

  2. When the dust settles and the final bids are in on the next heritage auction. If you strip nostalgia away and look at art for its aesthetic value put their 12k 8k pieces up against Tradd’s 12k 8k art and I think you’ll find Tradd's work will stand up to those pieces at the same price points and may even surpass them. I think that the lovers of Tradd’s art really do feel that his work is superior to the other options at those price points. “They buy what they love.” The number one rule of comic art.

Of course if you don’t love Tradd artistic style, you’ll think the prices are way too high, which is fine we all have differing tastes. That’s what makes the hobby great.

    Disclosure  - I’m a Tradd fan!

I'd love to see more editions of the podcast/YouTube series like this. Page by page interview before the drop. It doesn't have to be a big thunderous event like a Tradd drop, it can be for whoever's latest, I find them very interesting.

If you landed one of the coveted Dr Stange pages from the drop, how cool is it that you can scrub through the podcast and hear Tradd discussing his thoughts on your very page!

  4. This is not the ho hum auction like the last HA auction was, so we should get a better gauge of the market direction.

To add to the excitement of this auction, there is a lot of fresh to market Byrne/Austin X-Men and Starlord plus a wonderful Cap page… WOW!

Now that is pure Byrne goodness and should make the consigner(s) verrry happy!

This is the point -- C and D level pages have been bid ever higher since covid but interest appears to have slackened for this material on all platforms over the past 4-5 months. Whatever you want to call it, something is going on.

I think everyone is taking notice, it’s a relief to see prices that seem to be heading in a more reasonable direction… it might not last, but for now we have a bit of hope!

Agree. Thought the latest big HA auction was light for pieces under 10K... then I picked up a Byrne Spidey page a week later on HA for 1900 (34%) less than the hammer price in October... now this auction. I think the smaller collector just doesn't have the extra cash right now.

I think I know the page nice pickup!

  7. Friends having conversations about how high they would go on certian pieces, and agreeing not to drive the price up on who wants it more, seems to happen about as often as dealers randomly bidding up pieces to make sure the floor stays at a certain level for comic art. Seems like that is a natural way of most auctions, and in the end those two actions probably balance each other out.

  8. It doesn’t help that this auction didn’t seem to have as many top notch pieces as past auctions. The feature art (thurs) was a bit lack luster. So when you don’t have the bidding frenzy right out of the gate, I think people begin to question how aggressively they want to go for their target(s).

If prices aren’t only going up, but also down (see examples upthread) you better be sure you buy right before getting that second mortgage ; )
