  1. It’s hard for late modern newsies to heat up when you can’t find them. I own these Thors pictured but haven’t seen any others of these issues in any condition. CGC didn’t break them out in Census, so we just don’t know. in the case of Batman rebirth 24, CGC does break them out for the price variation, and it’s currently an overall 10 graded newsstand editions vs 466 direct. 6 9.8 newsstand editions vs 289 9.8 Direct editions. 1 of those 9.8’s is mine, I’m afraid these books may be too scarce to heat up. Food for thought: ASM700 seems to have a large supply of high grade newsies, makes sense considering it sold extremely well and was instantly popular.
  2. I very much appreciate the positive response on this book’s qualities. I qualified the nonexistence of the perceived flaws and still had people saying the book could be a 9.4. My biggest hesitation against regrading is that the book gets damaged in the process. I believe it’s every bit a 9.8.

    CFP Comics

Sounds like Joey should raise his prices.
  4. I have not seen either titles in newsstand of any issue. I just checked mile High Comics and they’ve none listed as newsstand, in stock or not, so they haven’t seen them either. Thats not to say Mile High Comics has seen every newsstand; I’ve got plenty of marvel newsstand editions they haven’t ever listed.
  5. @RockMyAmadeus I’ve not seen much info on the last newsstand issues from image. I think it was however long the creator kept selling through that channel. Spawn went until 133 I think. EDIT: Spawn newsstand went until at least 134; just found one (terrible condition) on eBay.
  6. Thanks! I have a Union #3 newsstand. Does that mean there’s a #1 newsstand out there? I didn’t see it in your #1 collection.
  7. I’ve been indiscriminate in which titles of issue #’s I pick up, but very particular on condition and price. These are all the high grade low priced Image newsstand books I’ve come across. I’ve seen plenty more in Fine or worse but didn’t take them.
  8. Alterna Comics definitely use newsprint in color. They also sell from $1.50 to $2.00 ea. I’ve got a few of them and pick them up when I see them. They have all ages stuff teen+ stuff, superhero, and horror. Some of it’s pretty good. I’d love for these to take off.
  9. Venom:First Host #3. Personally the 1st appearance of the goop he comes from does nothing for me. 2nd print is the book to have due to 1st cover appearance. I got the 1st print, didn’t bother with 2nd, oh well. i thought it interesting to see a symbiote without a toothy mouth.
  10. A bit out of the box, but here goes... Have you considered offering them on loan to a museum for display? temperature controlled secure environment for free or better. Not aware of insurance implications. You probably know some other $1m+ collectors that may be willing to do the same, creating a very impressive exhibit. my own collection is barely 5 figures, so this hasn’t been a big issue for me, yet.
  11. Well done, I like this. I agree the “unknown” designation could be improved, but I don’t have a replacement. It is slightly misleading in the example of Killer Croc, but perfectly suited to Knull (Thor God of Thunder 6 (2013) vs Venom 3 (2018).) What about a previews comic that features actual story to be seen in an upcoming 1st appearance issue? I’m thinking of Dark Horse’s Ghost. Comics Greatest World Week 3 is credited with 1st appearance, yet the Comics Greatest World Sourcebook released earlier shows an entire story page from Aforementioned book.
  12. X Force 11 in CGC 9.4 has been going for $30-50. Not too shabby, and a good book to own for Domino fans. making local sales is typically the best option for low value slabs. Shipping a $15-$20 slab (those other x force slabs) for $7-$10 really eats into the potential value online.
  13. I like to collect slabs to an extent. I see the early slabs holding low value moderns as a snapshot of the market and hobby at the time. I sought out a CGC 9.5 red label (Wizard First) because I think it exemplifies an interesting footnote in CGC’s history. I picked one holding a book I liked, Daredevil Father. Once again, it was cheap, so why not?
  14. A then full run of Spawn 1-72, meaning I bought it around May 1998, since 72 was the latest issue at the time. Still got them all, actually just rediscovered this collection this past Spring. It was awesome. I got them for less than cover with shipping, aww yeah.
  15. @ADAMANTIUM The state taxes on US domestic sales theoretically will lower purchase prices overall, at least at first. I have a hunch it will have little change to low cost sales as most will disregard the $0.50 on their $5 purchase, but will be heavily factored into large purchases, $500+, as the taxes become a significant expense. We’ll see, I suppose. Personally, I’ll factor in total cost involved in every purchase just as I do offline. But I seem to operate differently from the majority.
  16. Agreed. I looked at about 30 of these #8’s on eBay; all are newsstand. CBCS is technically correct in stating Newsstand Edition, but it’s superfluous information in this case (slab pun) unless someone provides a direct market edition. The CBCS newsstand designation cutoff of 2000+ is asinine. The most HTF high grade newsstand books are post-2000 and are some of my prized collection. I really want CBCS to succeed to give proper competition to CGC. All of us consumers benefit from that. They have a lot of catching up to do but at least they’re trying.
  17. The Op is right in saying the sales tax adds up. The exact math isn’t as important as realizing this makes a significant difference more many. As annoying as this can be it is inevitable. Online interstate sales have had the tax free advantage since their inception, but it’s been at the cost of the local brick and mortar. Catalog sales going back 100yrs had this too, but the quantity didn’t reach levels high enough to bother. I think it’s a good thing long term to have sales tax caught up with the times. It was a good run though.
  18. I could reword it: If you value top resale value over a clear slab display, CGC is your best option. There’s a chance you can get both.
  19. Considering it is apparently difficult to get to the dents to show up in a picture, they are likely almost all non color breaking and thus will be corrected with a press. The ones I see are mostly fingernail dents that are correctable with press. 9.0 is trending around $70, a bump to 9.6 would put it around $120. A 9.8 would be a score at about $250. The rainbow splash pic is the Newton Ring effect; extremely common on CGC slabs, irritating to most (myself included,) and harmless to the book. If you value a clear slab display over top resale value, a CBCS slab will be best option, IMHO.
  20. The Spider-Man 2099 comic is an original 1st print. I removed all the ink and redrew the parts I liked. Venom sketch for fun.
  21. I see it as an error that is highly visible when slabbed and doesn’t make the cover look worse... slab it. i personally like missed foil covers; I think they look cooler. They are the unintended nonconformists of the chromium age of comics.
  22. I’m a fan of Carnage but I never cared to read ASM 430-431. It seemed ridiculous that a power cosmic entity such as the SS would be susceptible to a symbiote. He should be able to pull a Sentry-esque ending to Carnage with little work. I’ve been very surprised at the value these books have been seeing. ASM410 seems to make more sense for importance IMHO.
  23. 6.0 i was thinking up to 7.0 except for spot of color loss on front cover below “461” im not very familiar with GA grading so I may be way off, let’s see what others think.
  24. I was just at Barnes & Noble, grabbing a copy of Mad #8, then right behind me came and elderly couple. The man was there to get his copy of Mad, his wife was reading the news to him from her phone to help figure out when the last issue will be there. He seemed genuinely saddened. 😔
