Best Silver Age Long Term Investments (On a Budget)
Dogsupreme replied to TheSSurfer's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
Agreed! I just got a SHOWCASE #37 from CGC and found it that it had been restored. Dang color touch! Now I got to find a unrestored one. I bought a MY GREATEST ADVENTURE #80 for $3 about 5 years ago from a dealer's clearance box. Still have it. Had it graded recently. Came back a 4.0. Not bad I would say. As long as we are on DOOM PATROL. #99 (1st BEAST BOY) has seen some heat and would be a good one to get. I got my years ago in VFN for about $8 and in plentiful supply. Not so much now. #100 is also not a bad one to get (origin). Still easy to get and not as expensive. SHOWCASE is a treasure trove of possible goodies. LOTS OF 1st APPEARANCES and SILVER AGE re-boots. I am trying to get a complete run. Another overlooked gem is ADVENTURE COMICS #269 (1st AQUALAD). With AQUAMAN and TEEN TITANS movies in the works only a matter of time. This book is really hard to find in high grade at a reasonable cost.- 133 replies

Hardback? What is this hardback you speak of?
-
BTW what would be the most valuable treasury edition? Superman vs Ali? vs Spiderman?any hidden gems?

It's one thing to be part of the story. That is ok in my book. It's fun to look up continuity. It's stuff like this.... Claiming to be the "first" appearance....

Oh great! Now I gotta go check out WOLVERINE 80. Lucky I have an issue.

Moderns that are heating up on ebay!
Dogsupreme replied to thirdgreenham's topic in Modern Age Comic Books
Is there a bubble brewing? I've noticed a lot of modern books can't seem to hold long term value. They will spike then fall hard. Even WALKING DEAD #1 has fallen a bit. But PETER PANZERFAUST? THIEF? CHEW? BONE? GOON? Will these books have long term value? I know things can turn on a dime but I am wonder if we are not heading toward another crash. -
What is VOLDY? Is there a link?

Overlooked and Potentially Undervalued Long/Mid-Term

Too bad but that may be a good thing. Might get a second chance. -
Overlooked and Potentially Undervalued Long/Mid-Term

I was not aware of that. Sometimes things can take time. Given time and some really good episodes with him or a series with him as a central character, who knows. I never pass up a #1 in high grade if they are $5 or less. Look at NEW MUTANTS #1. $1 fodder for a loooooong time. One of my general rules is if you see a #1 or 1st appearance of anything for a $1 or less pick it up no matter what it is. Most of the time you won't regret it. -
Nothing ventured. Nothing gained. I understand this can be a point of contention. Especially since even the slightest .5 can change the value of a key book. I just wanted to share my experiences. That is all. You are entitled to your opinion and I respect that. I appreciate pointing out his short comings and I will certainly mention it to him but I have known him for a long time. I may start looking into how CGC presses their book and compare.

I understand that now. Thanks for the feedback.

Getting silly... Ok, I think this needs to be addressed. I've noticed now that collector's and dealers are saying articles and ads are counting as 1st appearances. I think this is getting out of hand. It should always be in the official capacity of which they debuted in a story. Do you agree or do you think that non-story debuts count as official first appearances?

I have used the same presser for years and I am very happy with results and he is very experienced. I did not realize that I was opening a can of worms by posting examples and my experiences. I thought I was being helpful. Oh, well.

Here is an extreme case of pressing. I got a IRON FIST #14 from my LCS for about $20 due to the wrinkles as you can see in the before pictures. I went to my comic press guy and it came back much nicer looking as you can see. There can be a great difference in appearance. Here are before and after pics.

The book was submitted to CGC after pressing and it came back 9.0. I think before pressing it probably would have been a 8.5.

Anyone what these are? Found these buried in a lot I bought at estate sale. No idea what these are other they are British. Are they worth anything?
