I can not speak specifically about the Canadian,  However a quick search on Ebay pulls up more copies of the 2nd print Newsstand than its direct counterpart,20200702_031630.jpg.192ac30d9455a8b4cc8c940d406d4b1f.jpg20200702_031608.jpg.0af12cf4248c92ae37253e3b6952e23e.jpg

Which leads me to believe this falls along the lines of comics more like the Valiant 2nd + print Newsstands( example being Legend of Zelda)where they were Newsstand 20200702_032225.jpg.46b5d5636d7eb606a1b2f07d8a190ea5.jpg

or X Factor 71 2nd Gold were also all Newsstand.  20200702_031457.jpg.c0cc7be7d2470405e96ed3643377f447.jpg

Making these commonplace unlike 4 of the aforementioned books on the list. Another Example, but was released with an action figure Spiderman 2099 1 White which was also only a Newsstand,  but was limited . 20200702_031401.jpg.6bb4be628d68971f551ba03b8cfaf820.jpg

Some of the most likely candidates for these would be books close to the dates of the few known.

    Gold Spiderman 1 date 8/90

    Batman 457 date 12/90

    Superman 50 date 12/90

    Robin 1 date 1/91

    Superman 75 (3rd print) date 1/93

Although many of us , myself included have been searching for a lot of the potentials and have yet to find one. Still cant help but look though.

Most of them during this time were switching over to the Gold for second print and the Spider-Man 1 just keeps a lot of us looking.

Several possible issues have already been brought up , again though none have yet been found to have the Newsstand 2nd print.

Here is a mostly comprehensive list of DC and Marvel comics from the correct time frame (1989-1993) that all had 2nd or later printings yet not one Newsstand 2nd+ . Although I did leave off a few of the Giveaway and Promotional 2nd prints (examples were J.C. Penny 2nds, etc)

    Action Comics 654,660, 662,683,684, 685,686

    Adventures of Superman 467, 473, 496, 497,498,499

    Alpha Flight 106

    ASM 101,265,361,362

    Batman 411,423 ,436,447,489,491,492, 493,497,500

    Captain America 283

    Death's Head 1,2

    Detective 658,659,660, 664

    Fantastic Four 347,348,351,355,371

    Ghost Rider 5,15

    Green Lantern 1

    Justice League 69,70

    Legionaries 18

    Lobo 1

    New Mutants 87,95,100

    New Warriors 1

    Punisher The Nam 52

    Hulk 377

    Incredible Hulk 393,400

    Ren & Stimpy 1,2,3

    Robin 2

    Showcase 93' 6

    Silver Surfer 50

    Spectacular Spiderman 189

    Stryfes Strike File 1

    Superman 44,53,73,74,75(second non stickered)77,82

    Superman Gallery 1

    Superman Man of Steel 17,18,19

    The Legacy of Superman 1

    Uncanny Xmen 248,270,275,280,281, 282

    Valor 23

    Vengeance of Bane 1

    Warlock 5 6

    Web of Spider-Man 90

    Wolverine 41,42

    X Factor 60,

    X Force 1

    Xmen 11,25

Still I hope that other do turn out and hopefully it will have more clues as to how these exist. Good luck and Happy Hunting!

That quick search of turtle newsstands on eBay you just used as an example...where in the listing does it say that they are 2nd printings?

  2. I seem to have found another newsstand second printing and would like all of your opinions on it. Even though it’s an Archie this seems like the right thread for it. I have a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Movie newsstand second print Canadian variant. I have held this identical cdn variant newsstand copy in my hands before as a first print, so we can rule out anyone’s possible assumptions that all the cdn copies were 2nd prints. Also it appears all the ads for the 2nd printing are identical to the ads in the first printing. I have to date also not found a direct copy or USA newsstand copy 2nd printing, although I would “assume” they would also exist. TMNT adventures books are full of 2nd-5th printings as well as the direct AND newsstand cdn variants so a 2nd printing of a newsstand probably shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. Can anyone who has a copy of this book in whatever version confirm any other 2nd printing copies. Any info or thoughts would be appreciated.

  3. Figured I’d start a new thread for a very exclusive club. CPVs are hard enough to find to begin with, but double cover CPVs are an extreme rarity. I’ve seen a few posted on ebay, I think a “little shop of horrors #1” being the most recent I’ve noticed. My book to start with is a real doozy..the holy trifecta in my opinion. A CPV, double cover and key issue all in one. Enjoy, and please continue to add any you may have.

  4. I was recently looking through some old comics I hadn’t touched in decades and in-between one of the bags and the boards I came across a Halloween sale flyer from an old comic shop in Toronto called Unknown Worlds, circa late 1980s/early 1990s, and it triggered some great old memories. It was an amazing store and even to this day I can remember walking through the front door and taking in the strong smell of pulp that filled the air. I remembered it so vividly that I decided to draw a quick sketch of where everything was located. It had a massive tiered new comic rack, lots of back issue bins and the entire wall was covered in high end comics. It was marketed as a sci-fi/horror book shop and the entire back end of the store was geared specifically to that but I never actually went back there so I can’t for the life of me remembered what it looked like. The store had two big front windows but they were covered up with posters or something so the place was always very dimly lit which added to the ambience of the place. Sadly it closed down sometime in the early/mid 1990s. I was wondering if any other Torontonians on these boards remember this place?

    From CGC News page::

    https://www.cgccomics.com/news/

    4/2/2020

CGC remains open and fully operational at its Sarasota, Florida, USA headquarters and its office in London.

CGC meets a number of criteria for essential services according to Florida Executive Order 20-91, issued on April 1 by Governor DeSantis. The Executive Order specifically defines “essential services” to include, among many others, businesses that interact with customers electronically or by telephone and deliver products through the mail, manufacturing facilities, businesses that supply other essential businesses, and businesses that provide access to financial services, including non-bank financial services.

In addition to the enhanced cleaning and safety protocols previously instituted, including frequent cleanings of all work areas, CGC has taken the following immediate steps:

    • All customer drop-offs and pick-ups at its Sarasota headquarters, including the recently implemented Contactless Curbside Pick-Ups and Drop-Offs, have been suspended.
    • Any additional employees who have been identified as being able to do a substantial portion of their work from home will be required to do so.

CGC Customer Service representatives are working from home and remain available to help. The fastest way to reach CGC Customer Service is to email Service@CGCcomics.com.

Absolutely idiotic. I love comics and CGC does a great job but they are NOT by any means an “essential service”. If anyone is wondering why they forecast over 100k deaths in the USA alone it’s because of idiotic things like this.

    Cheers Sal :)

Are you able to show me pictures of any post July 84 cover dated 75c copy alongside it's differently priced US version? There are some post July dated single 75c copies out there, but they seem to be the only copies. The transition from 60 to 75c, and the introduction of dual pricing seems to be a bit haphazard which muddies the waters.

I want you to be right Sal - more copies is great! Please, show me one :wishluck:

I believe I may actually be wrong Marwood. When I said oct/84 I was looking at my original notes.   I’ve only done about 25% of the research on charlton so far. April/May 84 may be the correct end date after all. I’m currently elbows deep in research for another publishers CPVs so I haven’t been able to spend the time necessary on charlton yet. There’s always the possibility they jumped back to cdn pricing for a few months later in the run, I’ve seen it before. Keep the discussion and research going. 👍🏻

    Evening :)

As a side project to my Charlton pence and 15c variant work, I've also been capturing examples of the Canadian Price Variants for Charlton. I've populated the usual summary chart - it looks like this:

    can.thumb.PNG.17ba466e1d8584c630e1e0d85a835f1e.PNG

...and here is what I have discovered so far:

    • The earliest CPV cover date I have found is September 1983
    • The latest is July 1984
    • From August/September 1984 (all titles are bi-monthly, staggered by the way), 8 of the still running 11 title's issues have dual US/Canadian prices potentially indicating the end of the experiment (the other 3 become dual from October)
    • Every example I have found so far is priced at 75c (versus the US 60c copies) - I have found no other prices / annuals
    • There are twelve titles in scope between the date range (September 1983 to July 1984 inclusive) and each has at least one CPV. The titles are:
      • Attack
      • Battlefield Action
      • Beyond The Grave
      • Fightin' Army
      • Fightin' Marines
      • Fightin' Navy
      • Ghost Manor
      • Ghostly Tales
      • Gunfighters
      • Haunted
      • Scary Tales
      • War
    • If I am right about the dates, there will be a possible 64 CPVs across the 12 titles
    • So far, I have evidence of 46
    • The most any one title will have is 6 issues, again if I'm right about the start and end dates

Here is an example of a 75c CPV alongside it's regular US 60c copy:

    87.thumb.jpg.79f94771965cf472144ff38b3a933fc2.jpg  87u.jpg.b710dcf5ce6fa6cfee4997f3089538b3.jpg

Unusually for Canadian price variants, the CPV has a UK price too. Very odd really.

Anyway, just a brief overview to start the thread of what I have discovered so far. I have seen talk of CPVs existing as far back as February 1983, but have found no evidence of that. Maybe this post will draw out some more info / anything I have missed.

    All good fun :)

Charlton $0.75 Canadians exist until Oct 1984. I’m currently in the process of researching them for Bens Blog. Good job gathering all that info. 👍🏻

  8. Amadeus, whatever issues you have with anyone is your business, please don’t involve me. Everyone that has collaborated on it were complete professionals and have done spectacular work. As for the link to the blog I posted, all information relating to it is 100% correct. There has been hundreds of hours of research put into it between myself and the other involved parties. Please allow everyone to enjoy the blog for themselves.

I have a question if I may play “devils advocate” : why did you guys call/complain to Paradise Comics at the 3rd to 4th month? Why complain now at the 9th month or 1 year??

i don’t submit a lot of books to cgc, but I would estimate that it would take 3-4 months to send-grade-return from/to Canada. That timeframe might even be too long....

if this question has been asked before, please link me up.

Full Disclosure: I’m not associated with them, I too have some books submitted, but it’s only been at the two months mark.

I have inquired many times since around June/July. Was told repeatedly over the phone by various employees that there was a bigger than normal backlog because of con season and also because of the rush of people sending in books to get SS by Stan Lee. This same statement was pretty much repeated monthly since then up until this suddenly blew up. I would guess most others got the same explanation.

If Americans consider comics with Canadian prices to be "variants", do Canadians consider comics with American prices to be "variants"? Why would a Canadian consider comics with Canadian prices to be a "varisnt"?

There are plenty of threads on here describing Canadian price variants and a few good websites offering up more info on the topic if you are interested in finding out about them. ??

  11. Just got this from paradise. .....Hi Sal, it has been confirmed today that your CGC order has been verified and is scheduled to ship from CGC on Thursday March 29th. We should receive them on the following Monday and will have them recorded and be calling people on Tuesday.

Thank you for your patience and we will be giving you a call soon.

Sounds promising. My next issue would be making sure all the books sent back were the actual books I submitted. There are 6 high grade, high value Canadian price variants in the submissions and a great pence variant. Can’t wait to find out if any of them have mysteriously disappeared.

So Paradise either sent it to CGC and it sat there or they only recently sent it in. When his book was provided to Paradise though the previous manager was there so it should really not have been a management/staffing issue...

If the owner of the book calls CGC head office are they able to provide him the date it arrived at their facility? Is that information CGC would have on file?

I sure hope you change your mind about CGC. Their chance of survival hangs on your opinion.

Meanwhile, Paradise Comics, who admitted to lots of problems while failing to be totally honest with their customers, is a pillar in your community.

Thank you greatly for your comment. I wasn’t sure that I could get to sleep peacefully tonight without a heavy dose of sarcasm...but alas, my prayers have been answered. (thumbsu

I agree and it sounded odd, but that's what others said and no one corrected them. That is why we're all confused....it didn't sound right, but we were only going by what we were told. If you had the invoice numbers and your name was on it with paradise then cgc would have told you something, which is also confusing. Either way glad it's worked out and hopefully to your satisfaction. :foryou: I "think" what everyone is trying to say is hopefully this doesn't put a bad taste for cgc with you, because we all have experienced it differently :)

I appreciate your comment and yes I agree, it’s all a little confusing. My invoice has my personal info on it, so you are right that something doesn’t add up. I gave my invoice numbers to CGC when I called and they should have all my info on that invoice, unless like you’ve said, something is off. Either way, hopefully all of our books return safe and sound. I haven’t fully made up my mind about CGC yet, so far I am very unhappy, but time will tell.
