BACK FROM CGC: Fantastic Four #52
jevlnuts replied to jharvey's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
6.5 is my feeling on this one. -
Thanks for the info, I originally tried to find a thread specifically for underground books and didnt find anything. Probably just overlooked, I will find it and repost there. Like I said originally, the value really isnt that important to me, just curious more than anything. Thanks for the insight, appreciate you taking the time.

Please allow me to vent about grader notes...
jevlnuts replied to newshane's topic in Comics General
That's an excellent point, I can understand not being free to everybody, but making it free for anyone who has a paid membership makes sense to me. Its also another marketing tool they can use to build their membership numbers. -
Please allow me to vent about grader notes...
jevlnuts replied to newshane's topic in Comics General
Got to agree with you. I have always hated how they are not required to add notes. I can sometimes understand if a 9.6 does not have notes, but I have heard of people getting a book back as low as 8.0 without notes. The answer people always give in defense it that "there is probably some obvious defect and thus there shouldn't be notes"....that is a load of BS if you are asking me. Yes there may be obvious defects to those who have been collecting for years, but there are also a lot of people who are not proficient graders and do not notice these "obvious" defects. Not to mention when we pay for a service there should be more consistency. Either way, I agree with you and my rant is done. -
So these four books ended up in my collection recently. Underground comics is definitely not my area of expertise and I was wondering if anybody had any information these items. Im really looking for any insight as I enjoy learning the history of different comics and independent publications. I do not believe these items are particularly valuable but who knows, maybe they are worth keeping around for a while. Thanks for the info.

Hand cut blank variant covers each is a unique 1 of 1
jevlnuts replied to jadams's topic in Copper / Modern Age Only
Thats what I thought as well first, but once I got thinking about it, I dont necessarily agree with in being downgraded. My understanding is that the grade reflects the condition of the book and the flaws that it has collected over the years. Im not sure you could call these flaws. For instance, if I were to submit a book that is scribbled on indiscriminately , that is an induced defect and should be downgraded. But if I take a book that has a "sketch" from a known artist on the cover, this is not downgraded because it is not viewed as a flaw. Shouldnt we consider something like this a form of art and not a flaw, thus not being downgraded. My thinking may be completely off base but I was just spit balling. -

These are amazingly unique. Awesome, its always cool to see something new. I cant even begin to imagine how CGC would grade these! -
PGM: Wonder Woman #184 Adam Hughes Cover
jevlnuts replied to Wall-Crawler's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Agreed, this is a uniquely difficult book to grade due to the cover art made to look old and flawed. -
9.0-9.4 range. Awesome copy. One of my all time favorite covers
-
9.0/9.2 due to color breaking ticks on the spine. Even more interesting is what appears to be a production error on the back, towards the bottom, with the ink running. My understanding is that a production error like this should not be factored against the book. But this is something outside my level of expertise, so a more experienced eye should probably take a look at it.

8.5/9.0 Multiple color breaking spine ticks and corner damage that you already mentioned. Still a great book IMO.

When do you know it's worth CGC grading a comic?
jevlnuts replied to Eskreeyo's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
There are a lot of factors that come into answering this question. In my opinion there are three main things I look for in determining whether or not a book should be graded: 1)What is the age of the book? The older the book the better. Determine the age i.e. Golden, Silver, Bronze, Modern. 2)What is the condition of the book? Modern books usually must be NM but older books may maintain value if they are highly damaged. 3)Does the book have any special historical significance (i.e. first appearances, iconic covers, important story lines). These book are often referred to as "key issues". In my opinion, as a general rule of thumb, if you have book with at least two of these factors it may be worth getting graded. For instance if you have a golden age book in outstanding shape, in may be worth it. Likewise, you may have may have a modern book, that is a significant key issue in great shape, off the top of my head Batman Adventures 12 and New Mutants 98 would fit this mold. At the end of the day it is important to choose which book you have graded, not all books are worth the investment but some definitely are. -

PGM : Startling Comics #19 Schomburg !
jevlnuts replied to Dreamtoreal1's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
I dont usually say this, but I think you are grading it a bit low. I could honestly see this in the 9.0 or higher range. Awesome book. Great find.- 9 replies

+1. NM is considered 9.0 - 10, more specifically NM- to NM+. Book can still be near mint with minor defects.
-
As extremely frustrating as it may sound, the graders are not required to put notes. It is at their discretion. I have had notes placed on 9.6s before and I have had no notes on books that graded as low as 9.2.

A lot of variables to consider. Each book valuation but a general rule of thumb is that a 9.9 will be valued much higher than a 9.8. This is simply because 9.9 and 10 are nearly impossible to find. For instance, you can find a CGC 9.8 of New Mutants 98 on ebay right now for $800. The same book sold as a CGC 9.9 in 2009 for a staggering $12,250 and the current census has only one graded as a 10 EVER. At the same time, eBay currently has a Grimms Fairy Tale book graded at 9.9 for only 75$. So while 9.9 is very rare, if it is a book that nobody cares about then there isnt really much value. Hope this helps and answered your question.
