but they did note it on the label for awhile, right?? -
Incredible Hulk #181 - is it *that* red-hot?
alexgross.com replied to Getoutandstayout's topic in Bronze Age Comic Books
it's possible that it might come down some. look at AF15 last year. still, it shouldn't come down dramatically unless there is a large global crisis. i would get one now if i found a good one for a fair price, even though i know i might lose 10-20 per cent in the short term, because i feel confidently that within two years it will have done very well, based on past performance. -

i think perhaps some people thought you might be overlooking the subprime housing crisis and global financial crisis that also happened in 2008-2009. but it sounds like the pressing/ restoration issue also was a legitimate factor in price drops. still, all books seem to have had prices drop for 1-2 years during that time, not just common bronze age books, according to GPA analysis. -
New Overstreet next month, big SA movers?
alexgross.com replied to twmjr1's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
although it seems like a legit question, you have to realize that everything in there was written around 6 months ago. so it's even less accurate than you might already think. if it were current, it would say that JIM83, TOS39, ASM1, XMEN1 and FF1 have all made strong gains over this past year, at least in most grades. BA books hulk181 has also exploded. -

i am aware that you like to get into "debates" with other members here, but i don't believe your statement is accurate adam. there WAS a very sudden rise. on march 8 i was quoted $4800 direct for a 9.2 WP by a dealer who had the book on feebay. i hemmed and hawed. meanwhile, he sold it on feebay within a few days for his asking price of $5300, a very high price at the time. now a 9.2WP is going for 6k. my 9.0WP appreciated from $2100 to around $3600 over about two and a half years. then, within a few months, it went from $3600 to about $5k. those are just two examples of dramatic price increases compared to past performance. i have quite a few other examples as well. so, you just have to go back a little bit earlier than may. -

i agree, many people have been saying this book is overrated pretty much forever, and that it would drop. but the recent surge, something like increasing in value by 25-30% in a matter of weeks, is more suspect as far as whether it can be sustained. but there is no doubt that the longer trend for the book is only up. i'm just talking about the next half year or so when i suggest to wait and see. buying when something is at a record high can sometimes be a bad move. but, like you say, it may never be lower than it is now. -

could be. also could be plateauing now and things calm down for awhile. if you were paying attention this time last year, that's what happened to AF15 prices. they are now recovering, but last winter they dropped significantly from the summer highs. i'm not saying anything conclusively about Hulk181 but it's food for thought. the speed and magnitude of this run-up is truly unprecedented, which makes it a bit concerning. -
investment views?
alexgross.com replied to Casey Ryback's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
TOS39 is a great key that always has strong demand, and unlike ASM1, it has not shot up in the last year. it is just now starting to move upwards, and you can still obtain a very nice looking copy for 7k. this won't last much longer, so i would get one of those. it's the first appearance of a hugely popular character, unlike ASM1. i would stay away from cream colored pages if getting one. i don't know anything about the signature market so cannot comment on your star wars book purchase option. -

congratulations! that is truly a psychotic price for a raw eight. cgc 8.0 WP just sold for exactly 3k on heritage about 3 weeks ago. i dont think anyone saw that auction somehow. -
gotta be plenty of places online where you can make your own custom designed mugs. as long as you're not selling it, i'm sure you could make one with the 181 cover image.

calling 180 wolverine's first appearance is sort of comparable to early action and detective comics. the second appearance of batman and superman are both in books where he is not on the cover. which books are the most desired and valuable? the second, third and fourth COVER appearances, not interior. in any case, there is no one who wants a 180 instead of a 181. if you want one book, it's 181. seems pretty obvious. 180 could be rarer in decent shape since it doesn't appear to be a significant issue based on the cover, and so wasn't stored away as much. but i think it probably feels rarer because it hasn't been very valued until more recently. therefore it wasn't really considered worth grading or auctioning by a lot of folks who would have graded 181 if they had it. anyway, isnt this thread about the 'hotness' of 181? -

congrats! if i had had the funds right now i would have been competing with you for that JIM83. dont see white pages that often and it presents well for the grade. -

What to buy? FF1 or Hulk 1 3.0-4.0
alexgross.com replied to AJCohen's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
i couldn't agree more with what jim said. plus he's right about hulk 1 not really having moved in a few years, as opposed to FF1 being very hot just now. as with most investments, the time to buy is when it is not hot. FF1 very hot right now! ouch! -

the sudden jump 181 has made in the last 2-3 months is reminiscent of the jump AF15 made last spring-summer. that book dropped some after dramatically peaking. AF15 is obviously still a key book and is slowly creeping back up. but what will happen here? will 181 peak soon and have a bit of a pullback, or will these record prices sustain through the rest of the summer and into fall? i call this a "sudden" jump because i've been watching for 5 years, and it's always creeped up at a nice, fairly consistent pace in that time. this one has been extremely sudden as opposed to steady. -

alot of people here think so, no question. but, despite 180 being his first appearance in one panel, 181 will still always be “the” wolverine book that everyone seeks out. can’t beat that cover! -

looks like your lens is dirty jim. you might want to clean it. every shot is fuzzy in the upper middle left side. -
wrong place for this. go to the WANT TO BUY thread and post this there, with the price range you are willing to pay. perhaps read the rules about posting first so it doesnt get removed.
