My opinion is that ST 110 will move up faster.  I just think Dr Strange is a more interesting character than Ant Man.  He has a better costume and lair, Clea’s cooler than Jan, and his enemies are more entertaining/scary.  Also, Nightmare’s first appearance is in #110.

I...was not aware of the bolded part for the longest time. At this rate I should buy a second copy of ST 110 now, because I don't know how I'll be able to avoid selling my current copy in the next ~12 months.

Thanks to becoming more active in the threads here, I set up a Go Collect account and made a list with my CGC graded comics and have been tracking that. Just started and will do a monthly or bi-monthly check in also.

This is just for me as I'm still in collector vs. seller mode but will eventually start to whittle down the collection.

I should do that as well; my collection is currently in two locations, but maybe once I consolidate it I'll do so. Again, purely for tracking purposes (and maybe to allow me to get rid of things I've randomly won at auction and no longer want but can unload on someone who actually wants it).

Was reading the CC article from the Scoop newsletter which I receive every Friday and noticed one of their noted highlights here:  :applause:

Especially good to see that this gorgeous presenting copy here was still able to sell for $20,940 or for a healthy 41.5% premium over condition guide valuation, even though it was residing in one of those much dread PLOD holders, albeit with only Slight (A1) restoration work.  :golfclap:

I guess with restoration, it still really depends on both the extent and the quality of the restoration work because a CGC 7.0 graded copy of Action 7 with Mod/Ext (B-4) restoration work only sold for a tiny fraction of condition guide (i.e. 14.6% only), while a CGC 7.0 graded copy of More Fun 73 with Slight/Mod (A-2) restoration work sold at a discount of 67.5% to condition guide.  hm  (thumbsu

Oh what a gorgeous looking book that is. My copy of the other great Grundy cover (All-Star 33) is Restored, so I have no issues buying a PLOD copy when it's in my price range. Alas, this copy...was not.

So, hopefully all of you already have your copies of Adventure 48 locked away in your personal collection, although for some reason the movie/TV related hype never ever seems to affect the DC comic book characters like how they do with the Marvel comic book characters.  (shrug)  :(

Shhhhh. I (and my wallet) don't want to have to treat the D.C. characters like the Marvel characters. So keep quiet.

  5. I admit, I'm very curious to see where prices head in the next 6-8 months as people are able to put their money into vacations, restaurants, ballgames, etc. again, because I think that is partly what has driven the larger than expected increase in prices. In theory I want prices to continue to rise, because at some point I'd be an insufficiently_thoughtful_person not to cash-out on my ST 110, but at the same time...I'd like to be able to buy the Marvel keys I truly want, and will soon have the money to do it.

I might rub some guys the wrong way....but no one will jump in and back-me-up that Action #1 is better than 20,000+ existing 1995 Charizards?

I don't think that's really in dispute, but not everybody is going to want the Action 1 instead because they might have different priorities.

There are other threads on here about 9.4 AS 8, MF 73, Batman 1....with little or no context about the grade.  Just assuming it's the single best existing....and sounding-off about the auction result.  Totally ridiculous.

It isn't, though. It is reasonably to think that a Church book is the best copy of that book, and to consider it worthy of special discussion. It's why I, dedicated Batman collector, would probably pick the Church MF 73 over a 9.0 Batman 1 (assuming I have the funds to get another good copy of Batman 1)--because Church books are special.

You mean, the guys who have an emotional connection to Pokemon because it was a big part of their childhood will suddenly start caring about comics that were not a part of their childhood? :screwy:

So, I'm from the Pokemon generation (the earliest Pokemon, i.e. the ones that are now most expensive), and I can't even put into words the strength of the nostalgia I feel looking at the old cards. I'm not spending six figures on a PSA 9/10 Charizard, but I will happily pay four figures to put together a full run of the cards I used to have. The emotional attachment is stronger to the cards than the comics, but I still love collecting comics; then again, I may be abnormal since I do have an attachment to some comics characters from the GA like Batman and Superman.

You are generally obligated to report all income, from whatever source, to the IRS and your state taxing authority.  There are some de minimis exceptions.  Now, whether or now the IRS will be aware of your transactions is another question.  That gets into 1099 reporting, etc.  But if you are audited, and you sold $100,000 worth of comic books (or $10,000), you'd better be prepared to show that not all of it was gains, otherwise it will just be assumed to be income from dollar one.

Worst case example:  You purchase an Avengers #1 for $5,000 cash.  No record of your purchase.  You sell that same book for $6,000 a year later, and its shows up in your bank account.  Unless you can show via contemporaneous records that your cost basis was $5,000, the IRS is going to assume that $6,000 was income.  So assuming top combined fed/state marginal rate of 45%, you could be liable for income tax equal to 45% of $6,000, rather than 45% of $1,000.

    :tonofbricks:

Interesting. I suppose the chances of the IRS noticing go down significantly if you use cash, and just consistently keep the reserve of cash for buying future books (but you probably need to disclose anyway, as you point out). And this shows the necessity of keeping things like receipts, to show it's not all pure profit.

(This just makes me happy that I am not one who does any flipping.)

I follow a simple rule. If there is ANY record of the transaction, I report it. Ebay, PayPal, Zelle, cashier's check, money order, what have you. I have done a few face-to-face deals and have been paid in cash, but, more often, I'm the buyer, not the seller, in this type of transaction.

I was always under the impression that cash deals, basically, don't need to be reported in this way (I've never really followed-up, since I don't have reporting level money and, like you, I'm always a buyer). So I suppose such an investor could take their 9.0 XM 1 to a con, and sell in cash, but that's somewhat unlikely, isn't it (and maybe you still need to report a $150k sale, even if it's cash, or the dealer would need to report it)?

I dunno. I don't buy for investment--my idea of "investment" is being willing to part with my $100 book when it suddenly becomes $300 book.

Most probably one of these newbie deep pocketed CGC label collectors who's not knowledgeable enough to know that this particular copy here was graded and slabbed during arguably one of CGC's softest grading time periods in 2010/2011.  hm  (shrug)

Clearly, the mantra for the newbie all-wise Reddit Gamestoppers, sports card traders, and crypto investors here is to "Buy the label, not the book".

Most definitely, yes. Which, hey, fine by me. When I have the money to buy the "discounted" 9.6s, I'll have slightly less competition.
