Me too, I actually like it better than the 61 cover
I think I prefer the 61 cover, although this is also a classic.

The owner of the AA 61 when he posts in this thread and I track him down to claim the book...

That's probably because some of the deep pocketed noobs and newbies to this comic book marketplace of ours who bought into the story and hype and were placing such high bids on the Promise books didn't realize there could actually be quality comic books that existed beyond the Promise Collection that might actually also be worth bidding on.
Sadly, even these Batman books were outside my price range

The Promise collection has no big keys but the grade of the books and super-charged marketplace made for an explosive sale.
Is that true? AA 61 and Detective 140 are, to me, "big keys"--maybe not Action 1/Detective 27 level, but I think those books qualify.

Not from my own personal POV as per a post I had made in the other thread since I thought bidders did not yet have a chance to "feel out" the auction at such an early stage, along with another boardie's response:
That's a really interesting perspective you and @Peter G posted. The evidence certainly seems to back it up.

I remember when a buddy had a Batman 1 in a sweet 5.0 unrestored for 11K and had it for a year... and he did shows up and down the East Coast .... mid 90's. But then, 11K was the equivalent of 16 million today. GOD BLESS....
-jimbo(a friend of jesus)
11k in 1994 would be ~20k today; ~23k if in 1990 and ~18k if in 1999. Still sounds like a good deal to me!

I can’t believe my initially assessment was almost right. Tec 140 almost hit $500K.
Nail on the head with the Grundy books, too.

The AA 61 sold for $138,000, and the AS 33 sold for $33,600. Great prices for both I'd say.

One book that hasn't been discussed at all is the Gaines 9.8 Shock SuspenStories #6, which currently sits at $23,400. This is more than double the last 9.8 sale, although granted that was eons ago (2019). It's also more than the sale of a 9.9 copy back in 2015.
What's really amazing is when I checked the census just now, there are 5 9.8 copies of this book and 2 9.9 copies!
I imagine this copy is getting some uplift from the cover OA being sold in the same auction, but still...
Oh I've noticed that book. It is so beautiful, but alas I cannot afford it. I truly love that cover. I can't believe there are 7 copies in 9.8 or higher.

I'll admit, I much prefer this to Snyder's Superman. I think it's a much more humanized Superman and Clark, without the level of darkness that Snyder used in his version, and I like that. The balance seems right to me.

I believe the upcoming 2022 "The Batman" has the Riddler as the main foe.
It's all about the movies ...
Not in this case, I don't think. Riddler has always had weirdly high value, seemingly unrelated to movie buzz; Tec 140, in particular.

I'm actually thinking it comes close to $500K.
I'm splitting the baby; I could see it hitting somewhere around 300k.
The Grundy books are undervalued, especially AS 33, which is only at 11,500; whereas AA 61 is at 65,000.

I'm considering selling Batman 181 , its VF I believe (w poster) , how much can I expect for it minimum (sending it in is prolly too expensive from overseas)
CGC 6.5 on GPA 90 day (7 sales) is 1552, and a 6.0 just sold for 980 in March; I'd imagine a raw VF copy would hit somewhere in that range (and a 7.0 just did 1906 in May)?

Leveraging debt to pay for comic books is a terrible idea. Especially in this auction where there's going to be a feeding frenzy with insane prices. If you don't have the money in the bank, don't spend it in an exponential market.
I'm getting heartburn just thinking about it.

I just liquidated my bank account twice for each Grundy book. I suspect I'll be outbid by dinnertime.

I'm waiting to buy during the off-season, moreso into football season
I wish I had your patience. I just poke around on eBay, see a card, say "Ooh, I want it!" and put in a bid. I should be more methodical.
A discussion about comic conventions, post pandemic.

The last show I went to was C2E2 in February of 2020; if I'd had any idea of how bad the Pandemic was going to get, I would've skipped it out of caution and concern. I *cannot wait* to start going to shows again; both my local monthly shows and the big shows (likely just Baltimore, which was the only one I ever went to). I have more money to spend now than I used to, even as prices have risen, but more importantly, I can't wait to see my favorite dealers again and get back to that social aspect of the shows.
