  1. Such a cool project! I was kind of considering something along those lines as well (though I'm not nearly as ambitious as you) -after I get my Showcase issues and 4 more golden age Flash. I was thinking of picking up a book or two from several titles, and yes even Marvels just to have some of each represented in my collection.
  2. At one time in the 1990's I had 2 copies of Flash 123. One was in VF (probably a 7.0- 8.0 on the current scale), it would be worth a fortune right now. But the #1 book that haunts me today is a Golden Age book, Flash Comics #77. Not a key but it too was in the 7.0-8.0 range. They are so rare in that condition and now so very expensive. I may never have a chance to own one in any condition. I have since obtained a copy of 123 but alas in a much, much lower grade. I'm sure those babies are slabbed and well loved now, but I sure do miss them!
  3. Welcome to the boards! Its always great to have a new Flash fan join the conversation! And CONGRATULATIONS!!! That is an awesome achievement! (Worth 4 dancing bananas) I too, am on the quest for the Showcase issues now. (except for #4)
  4. Just an awesome collection there! Thank you so much for sharing the journey with us!
  5. It reminds me of a very early issue in which another professor was kidnapped. (those professors ...dangerous job I guess) Now I will have to go back and figure out which one I was thinking of and which one this is.
  6. Incidentally, how much was that service? I have a 107 with an Infantino autograph on the splash page and I was considering that option. But then there's the dilemma of no one being able to see it once its encapsulated.
  7. It's priceless just the way it is! You wouldn't want a cover on it, it would hide the autograph!
  8. That's AMAZING!!! That is absolutely worthy of the rare triple dancing bananas!!!
  9. Love that 60's Flash Gordon run! It's cool to see it in French!
  10. What do you all think the impending Flash movie will have on the prices of Silver Age Flash? I think it got moved back again to 2023.
  11. In my mind from all that I've gleaned from collecting this title for over 40 years now, these 4 issues saved the whole industry. Lightening struck that lab in Showcase 4, a new hero was borne and Flash came to the rescue, proving that a new kind of hero could sell comics once again. What do think of when you think of the Showcase issues? When did you buy your first Showcase issue?
  12. These 4 issues were so important not only for our beloved Flash but for the entire industry. I wonder if some of you might share your thoughts on the subject of the Showcase issues.
  13. That reminds me to check the humidity in my little comic storage area (don't tell anyone, its the walk in closet. ) Maybe someday I will build a Comic Cave!
  14. So awesome to see the three here together! Thanks for sharing Sam and for sharing your story. The boards have been amazing for me too! I never would have found the right 106, the right 110, 111, 139 for me had it not been for the boards. Also the last part of the run was kinda hard for me to find locally. But I made some friends here and was able to get those. Maybe, just maybe this summer I may get my hands on a #14, we'll see...keep your fingers crossed for me. For a collector like me with tiny pockets there has to be a combination of the right book in the right low grade, at the right time (when I have a little extra cash) and a whole bunch of luck to come together all at once to make one of these babies fall into my hands.
  15. When I set out to complete the run, I always imagined it 'complete' without these 4 special issues. Just 105-350 as I thought it would be nearly impossible on my budget to obtain any of these amazing books. I was surprised at the opportunity about a year and a half ago to get #13. It was affordable, not very pretty to most of you but a thing of beauty to me. And so now it seems it may be possible for a 'D' list Flash collector like me - that one day I may be able to get 3 out of the 4?
  16. Here is my only Showcase Flash so far. Lets share our Showcase issues and discuss! 3rd Appearance of the Silver Age Flash! Writer: Bob Kanigher Pencils: Carmine Infantino Inks: Joe Giella Editor: Julius Schwartz
  17. How many of us Flash collectors have any or all of the original 4 Showcase appearances? I have just the one SC #13. I Will share my beloved battered and torn copy later tonight. But we really haven't done a thorough discussion of these very important comics.
  18. The insides of these are just awesome! These little campy short horror stories along with the Vampi story. Just great stuff--and the covers!? I mean its just an awesome title to collect! I counted the other day I now have 26 so a little less than a 1/4 of the way complete. I already have a #2 and a #3 and 4 of the 5 Frazetta covers? So most of the heavy lifting is done. I am really enjoying putting this thing together.
  19. I saw a youtube recently of an interview with a dealer at a convention last year, who was asked a very similar question.. He said the hobby is alive and well and brought up the popularity of the movies over the last 20 years. He said these kids who at 20 years old and younger have all grown up on this stuff and when they come of age they are going to go after this source material. Because they love it and they know where it all originated. He said we have not even begun to see the impact that this younger generation will have on the hobby.
  20. This is a very interesting subject. My son is 14 his enthusiasm for comics comes from a combination of me, movies and video games. He buys modern comics and has little interest in the Silver and Gold stuff like his father. He does not really like single issues, preferring to wait for the collection in graphic novel form. I feel like this may be the future of the hobby. Graphic novels and digital content, with some interest in the past. But any burning desire for the older stuff would be quickly dashed by the price for the average collector. When I was 14 I could make $10 by mowing 2 lawns and could buy a cool Golden Age or Silver Age comic in the 1970's. That is not really possible anymore for the major characters. But if you hunt and are willing to accept and be happy with a 1.5 or a 2.0 you can still obtain some really cool stuff for under $100, but for how long? I will see if I can get him to come on the boards and speak to this directly here in a day or two.
  21. It's tough! But you have an extremely nice copy there! Thanks for sharing! I wish they would put more notes but then again I wouldn't want to slow up the process any. From the grading contest I can tell you there was a very nice book there, just beautiful, but it did have a very small tear like yours. Everything else was outstanding- I wouldn't give it a 9.6 or a 9.8 but I graded it at 9.4--it came back from CGC as 9.0. So I got 2 points for that book. (points are bad for the grading contests)
  22. Funny interaction during the contest during round 3 where I had a particularly difficult time grading a certain Spider-Man book.
  23. Here's how Frozentundra and I did in the Spring grading contest. Representing the Flash thread!
