  1. My first comic shop was Classic Movie and Comic Center in Farmington, MI back in 1977.  The main floor was filled with movie posters, movie stills and other memorabilia.  If you went down a twisting staircase (decorated with artwork by Terry Austin), you came to the comic section.  They had tons of comics along with paperbacks and sports cards.  They used to call me and my brother whenever they got a collection of Richie Rich comics and we would go up there to try and fill some gaps in our collection.

They moved to Livonia, MI in 1981 which was nice because it was a lot closer to my house.  I started working there in 1986 and kept working there throughout high school, college and after I started teaching full time, though it was mainly just Saturdays at that point.  The store closed in 2005, but I have a lot of good memories from the store.

Is Heroes Con worth the trip?

It was a decent enough convention and parking isn't bad, especially on Sunday when street parking is free,  It was only so-so for me, though.  I was mostly looking for 1940s-60s Harveys and Dells plus some 1960s/70s Gold Key books.  I also picked up a few 1950s/60s DC books.  Overall, I came home with around 50 comics.  Baltimore was a better show for me this year and I thought was a better show  than Heroes Con overall.  I bought around 80 comics there.  Each of these kind of pale in comparison to my typical Wizard World Chicago show where I tend to buy 200-300 comics.  Wizard World Chicago gets a bad rap at times, but it has been good for finding comics, though it has been slipping a bit the last couple of years.

My want list has been dwindling in recent years due to all of my purchases so that probably contributed to the smaller amount of books purchased at Heroes and Baltimore.  I skipped Wizard World Chicago this year for the first time in 20 years because of my visits to Heroes, Baltimore and C2E2.  C2E2 is not worth a trip if you are looking for older comics, unless maybe if you are looking for some high priced wall books.  There wasn't much of a dealer section there.

  3. I went to Heroes Con back in June and called a few of the comic shops, but there wasn't much to be found.  I think that they keep their show stock separate from their store stock.  Maybe if you contact some of them in advance with specific books you're looking for you might have some luck, but just stopping in for a visit while you're down there won't be very fruitful, I suspect.

The show was a great show. We ended up with 3 short boxes between me and my friend, though I should say is 3.5 boxes as the .5 box is for my personal collection. Gonna be tricky in how to disburse the luggage weight to avoid overweight fee 😆

We had enjoyed very much by chatting with new dealers and boardies there. I had chatted with one dealer who has two interesting display stands with paperback books ... one being the DC brand and other one the Marvel brand. See the photo showing the DC stand. The dealer told me that he got them from the former store which was in business for 40 years in Virginia until its closing. These display stands were stored in the back of store with ALL original books unsold! He has 4 stands - two of DC, two of Marvel. They are all from late 1970s.

This was at Bill's booth.  He's a pretty nice guy and usually has some interesting things.  He had a couple of boxes of European Disney comics, Cheerios premiums and other giveaways plus lots of regular comics from all ages.  I see him at Detroit shows and at other places pretty regularly.

Wow, Baltimore looks like they have a ton of comics.

There are definitely a lot of comic books there.  I spent the last two days buying a fair number of comics - Green Lantern #1 to finish that set, golden age and silver age Harveys, Dells and other DCs as well.

I've had better luck at Wizard World Chicago most years in terms of finding comics I need and getting good deals, but this is a good show.
