Wise advice. And should be much easier to pull off.

For the criminally unaware, approximately how much is your entire collection worth at FMV?

I'm working up a number.  I still have to load the total collection into Comic Collector, which uses relatively conservative pricing for raw books.  Much lower than even 9.2s from the Price Guide.

I think the leg work would be easy enough as you could just send a formatted email with an excel attachment of the books and simply ask if there is any interest to every local shop with an email.

Unfortunately by your own admission you have "high grade" moderns that any real value has already been picked out and you do not believe pennies on the dollar would be a reasonable deal when sold in bulk. You may need to reassess what the value you place on these is.

That's a good idea re reaching out to the local shops.  I haven't bought true moderns in years, so I don't have an ongoing relationship with any comic shops here in LA.  Moved around a lot while I was doing my modern collecting as I was in the Air Force.

While most dealers won't pay much for most modern bulk, shop owners may be more generous if you trade for stuff they already have in stock.  A few months back, I traded two short boxes of post-Disney Marvels for a couple of  Phantom hardcovers that were gathering dust in a shop's backroom. Dealers will almost always offer more in trade than cash.

Yes, but I'm getting out of collecting, so I'm not looking to trade them.  I know it's not going to be easy.  Maybe I can find someone to list them for me?

  5. Folks,

I have about 1,800 high-grade, mostly NM and higher, comics I want to sell.  Nothing awesome in this grouping as I've been selling off the CGC'd and keys separately, but they are very choice, high-grade comics.  Most are Spider-Man related comics including all of the obvious titles through the early '90s.  Do any of your know someone reputable I could work with in the LA area to unload some or all of them?  I'm not looking for pennies on the dollar, but a reasonable deal.  Shipping these would obviously be expensive, but I did work with a dealer in the past where I delivered a number of boxes at a local show.

99% of the comics are in Mylars and half- or full-backs, and 99% are Marvels.

Thank you much.  Hope you all had a terrific Thanksgiving!

I spent some time trying to find out what was planned for future release and had zero luck.  I ended up just being content with the Wikipedia list which I used to see what I wanted to pick up.  So far I have over 50 issues.  I am buying to read post retirement.

Yes, me too!  Great resource if you actually want to have something in your hands and on the shelves.  I love the MMW, and I'm getting the sets for ASM, SSM, MTU, and other odds and ends.

Besides Tales of Wonder, you can go to the other site maintained by DCBS, In Stock Trades. When you search by Marvel Masterworks, you can see past, present, and future volumes for sale, with approximate arrival dates.

Tales of Wonder is so difficult to search their site, but I have purchased many trades from them in the past.

  8. Hello,

I'm going through my Spider-Man related collection for books that should be slabbed.

    For Spectacular Spider-Man, I'm looking at 1, 2, 3, 6,9, 22, 23, 24, 27, 64, 87, 90, 98, 101, 107, 231 var, and Annual 4.

My purpose is to make them easier to sell, and ensure I am not overlooking a very grade copy or two.  When I've pulled some of my HG ASMs, I have been getting plenty of 9.6s and 9.8s, so that can make a pick difference.

Let me know what you think.  Thank you!

    V/R, Mike

  9. UPDATE:  I ended up shipping the full CGC boxes, with the graded comics, in medium Home Depot, heavy duty, double-walled boxes (21" x 16" x 15").  They worked great.  I was able to put packing peanuts under and around the boxes, plus ensure the comics were snug and safe inside the CGC boxes (each with plastic bag, paper to fill gaps, etc.).  Six boxes weighing just over 200 lbs...no damage, and cost well under half of what a freight company wanted to ship them.  Finding the Home Depot double-walled boxes was the game-changer for me!  Single-walled boxes are terrible, and likely would have burst open with the weight and pressure.

  11. Heading to eBay...  Thank you for those who looked.

    ^^^

    Folks,

I've been on the boards from near the beginning, and I'm selling my Bowen Minis.  These are all basically like new and in the box, except for the Bullseye mini.  I don't believe most of these have ever been displayed.  They are stored in a large closet in a smoke-free home.  First I'll take it in the thread wins!

Returns accepted within 10 days of receipt in the same condition, but return shipping is on you.  No probations...

I will ship in secure boxes, and to US and Canada only, but you will have to pay the extra postage to Canada.  Postage is $15, to include secure packing and delivery confirmed shipping.  If you purchase more that one Bowen, additional items will be $10 for shipping, as many of these are larger boxes.  If it's a smaller box, I'll reduce the combined shipping.

Payment can be made via check (must clear before I ship), money order, or PayPal.

Let me know if you have any questions!  I hope I got this right.  I've bought a ton of comics and items over the years on the boards, but I don't think I've sold anything here.  I wanted to start here before heading to eBay as I want real collectors to have a first crack at these.

Thank you for looking, and have a great day.

    V/R, Mike

  12. I will definitely continue grabbing an occasional reprint book or Masterworks of my Spider-Man series, but that's probably it.  And trying to sell even a relatively smaller collection of a couple thousand books will take time to get a decent prices.  I'm pretty busy, so setting up sales on eBay or the forum will be hard for me to do.  Slow and steady...

LOL.  I know the feeling.  Although I've picked up maybe 4-5 "exception" books over the last 5 years, I basically got out in 2017-18.  Selling off my sports card collection at the moment.  In a few years, I'll probably start selling off the books as I get closer to (hopefully) early retirement.

I assume you're a vet or active duty...thank you for your service.  28 years in USAF for me...

I didn't quit but I did change drastically.  In 2019 I had almost nothing but 9.8 slabs.  As prices went wild, I became a bit uncomfortable with how much money I had in comics, and I gradually unloaded my collection, mostly in 2021, and switched to 9.4-9.8ish raws.  I now have a pretty serviceable raw collection which was entirely funded by the profit from my 9.8 slab arbitrage.  I feel pretty good about this because I have all of my nostalgia books and if the market continues to increase, great.  But even if the worst happens and they all go to zero, then I didn't lose anything and still have my nostalgia, which is the whole reason I got back into comics anyway.

Sounds like a good strategy!  I have found through the years that I have been very good at picking high grade raw copies, that and I use reputable graders like Bob S.  That's allowed me to cover my expenses and even make a little on some incredible books.  Good luck with your new strategy!
