that looks like a large water stain on the back cover bottom right corner. If that's the case, then you will take a huge hit on the grade on an otherwise very nice book

nice black cover key book, love these. Mildly rounded corners with light color break on the black corners, very light edge wear, few small partial color color breaking spine tics, back cover spine creases.
Assuming that the discoloration at the top left edge of the cover is recognized as manufacturing (if not you're hosed) and that the whites are cleaner than appear on the scans:

Really interesting case here. If it was in fact trimming, it was so bad as to make the appearance worse than any ragged edge would. I think this might fall into the category of a significant defect like hole punches where you still get a universal grade but get a massive reduction in grade since you've damaged both covers and every single page. However, it's entirely possible you could get a dreaded PLOD 5.5.
Best case scenario: Without the trimming, this looks like a 5.5. Add in the massive structural damage from trimming and i'm guessing...
CGC 3.0 universal blue label. I would call CGC or send a picture. not sure if you could submit this for a prescreen for a blue label, but would definitely be worth asking.
Blue label 3.0s are still fetching decent prices, so if you get the green (blue) light from CGC on a universal label, definitely slab it.

Binder punches are considered a significant defect, but do not make the book incomplete. CGC has graded books with holes punched and otherwise VF/NM books with 2-3 hole punches on the edge of the book have received a blue 4.0 to 4.5. Without the holes, this book is a 5.5, so with the holes...

Nice colors and structurally sound book in the VG range. Accumulation of color breaking creases and markings are par for the course in this grade, no pieces missing, no bad tears.
However, it looks like there is a lot of light staining and soiling throughout much of the back cover that is not foxing. VG typically allows for light soiling but I think this will take a hit.

That is a beautifully presenting 2.0. The cover alone looks like a 3.5/4.0. It looks like there may be a large faint stain on the back cover, but hard to tell.
Can you post grader notes? Are there interior defects that bring down the grade?

You are correct and I should clarify. This is another one of those topics where I guess we need to be more specific about Overstreet grading vs CGC grading. We know that the 2 grading standards differ significantly on a few issues like staining/soiling and missing pieces. Loose / detached centerfolds and covers (popped staples on the cover) is another one where there is some divergence. In mid to high grades, CGC will give either a qualified grade to an otherwise nice book with a detached or loose centerfold or will give an apparently high grade book a universal label with a significant reduction. There are examples of otherwise 9.4 books with a completely detached centerfold receiving a CGC universal grade of 6.5 and 7.0. Overstreet obviously does not recognize qualified grades and a completely detached centerfold is only allowed in a GD (up to 2.5) grade. Many have argued against the overly strict Overstreet criteria in an otherwise structurally excellent book and thus the likely reason for the divergent CGC criteria of using a qualified grade or giving a universal grade with a significant reduction.
In lower grade books, like in this case, there is not a significant difference and Overstreet vs CGC criteria do not differ much as the qualified grade becomes a non-issue once you're in the sub 3.0 range.

Great book! Classic. no missing pieces, just lots of wear. detached centerfold and large horizontal tear determine the grade.
detached centerfold puts limits the grade to a max GD+ (2.5), the large 3" tear knocks it down a notch.

It looks like a 5.5 Fine- structurally. However, there is a very small and light stain under BP's crotch, and a very tiny stain spot on the back cover upper right text and very light soiling spots on the bottom of the back cover that do not look like foxing

Structurally a very solid book with a moderate spine roll, minor non-color breaking creases and bends, a small chip/ding upper right corner, would be a 6.5. However there are 3 small stains/soiling on front cover that will get hammered hard.
CGC 4.5 due to stains on an otherwise very attractive book. possibly worth a consultation for cleaning to remove stains.

VF is not unreasonable for this nice looking book. The defects we see: color breaking spine creases, bottom cover small color breaking crease, minor worn corners, are acceptable in the low end of VF- and definitely acceptable in the F/VF range

small stains and mild soiling are acceptable in VG which is what we see on the back spine edge here. larger size stains and greater penetration into the book is allowable as the grades go down. In a mid to high grade book, soiling and stains (even small ones) will get hammered hard. My favorite example is an FF48 CGC 4.5 I almost bought last year that presented like a 7.0 except for a 2"x1" almost imperceptible water stain on the bottom cover.

This is not a terrible copy. It's beat but looks complete. No pieces missing from covers and i'll assume no missing pieces from interior pages. wear, tears and color breaking creases are par for the course in the 2.0-3.0 range.
a) CGC 2.0 with a decent shot at 2.5
b) no, a press will do nothing but possibly tear this fragile book apart and will do nothing to improve the grade
c) Yes, this is a valuable book even in this condition. If I wanted to read it, i'd just buy a reprint instead of risking a tear or cover detachment by handling this book.

fairly severe marvel chipping, moderate top edge wear, large accumulation of color breaking creases throughout , discoloration of interior cover, moderate spine wear with small staple tears.
a) CGC 3.5 VG- that may pass as a 4.0 on a good day
b) no, pressing will not help this grade higher
c) see my answer for FF 12, but yes i'd slab this one as it looks a little fragile.

looks to be a staple-length spine split by the top staple, about 1/2". pretty solid presenting VG/F unless that split is longer or there are other spine splits that are not shown.

b) no, a press would not help this grade at all
c) depends. absolutely slab it if you plan on selling it and are confident there's no resto. If it's for your personal collection/enjoyment then it's up to your own preference. If you're a klutz with two left thumbs that has a severe tremor disorder, drops books and has a propensity for tape tears, then slab it.

few spine tics (don't think they're color breaking, just a black cover showing creases well in light), slight corner rounding, back cover bottom edge wear. i've seen worse corners on a 9.4 (see below)

awesome book! structurally this book is in great shape and the colors are amazing. the staining and staples are the major defect here. Interestingly, rusty/discolored staples are not considered a big defect by CGC while stains and soiling get hammered
