  1. wow... there are some awesome books in this thread!

I've had a full run of everything after the initial series and just recently started working on the 1st series...

Bought a #1 graded as FN+, but it unfortunately came back quite a bit lower... :-/ (purchased from WW Comics... by far the biggest discrepancy I've had with their grading...)

I've got a #3 still sitting in Sarasota and finally just ordered a replacement for my FF48 that I unfortunately traded away years ago for next-to-nothing (in today's world) with another WW Comics order, so hoping the grading holds up a bit better this time around!

I haven't posted in this thread, but we have had discussions regarding Ross Andru Spidey going back 10 years.  It was true then and it is true now.  In my minds eye, when I think of Peter, MJ, Spidey, Punisher, the Goblin, Doc Ock, JJJ, Robbie Robertson, Harry, Liz and especially Aunt May, they all look the way that Ross Andru drew them in 1976-1978.  There is no greater compliment I can give to the man and his craft.

This time frame is way too early for me to actually *remember* first-hand, but I still feel like this is true...

I finally just bought a copy of 151 and can't wait for it to get here so I can open it up!

  3. I don't think I could keep the collection anywhere near that small, but I am trying to limit myself by space now...

I just recently finally finished pulling together everything I want to move which will be about half my collection, and now I'm going to try to keep it to 20 short CGC boxes and 15 short raw boxes.  At some point it just became overwhelming (and way too expensive!)

The advent of digital will certainly help this.  I try to make sure I read (or have read) everything that I own and still buy what I like to read in addition to collect.  I like to read the Marvel mini-series events, but do I really need to own hard copies of House of M and Planet Hulk that I will certainly never open again?  Probably not..

The original owner stopped writing his name at the top of the front cover of the Winnipeg books some time around the end of 1965.

I don't see any distinguishing mark to suggest your copy of JIM #114 belongs to the Winnipeg pedigree, and it's missing the signature during a time when it should be expected to carry one.  I still have a copy of the Showcase New England catalog for winter, 1997 when the Winnipeg collection was first brought to market.  With the caveat that many of the Winnipeg books were a bit overgraded, the JIM #114 was sold as a NM book, a grade even SNE would be highly unlikely to give a book with as many spine stress lines and dinged corners as your copy.

This information suggests that CGC most likely mislabeled your copy.

Ah, yes, thanks... that's the info I was actually expecting to hear... the lack of signature on this, 7 months prior to the signed 121, really seemed off. I may try resubmitting on an invoice that doesn't have a Peg copy and see what happens. Thanks again

What was the grade of the ASM 129 you had?

Pretty similar... whenever this was, the two books were relatively close in value in similar grades. This was well before I was scanning and logging everything though, so who knows! Regardless, live and learn! :)

i doubt CGC would have missed this though... it was a CCS prescreen that caught this... I just never thought to check... my first major fail from old purchases that I'm just now submitting...

  6. Wow.  So I go the grade I should have given ebay grading is not CGC and just lucked out on the Pedigree?

How is it that we, as a community, don't have a quick reference guide for identifying Pedigrees outside of the obvious markings?  Or have I just not been able to find it?  Would love to know what I need to be looking for... not least of all to restore my faith in CGC Pedigree labels. (a few months prior I had a Pedigree mismatch on 2 copies of E-Man #1)

The comicpedigrees site is nice, but it doesn't give details on identification...

Wish we had a comprehensive list (with scans) of the collections at the time they were found...

  7. I bought a raw copy of JiM 114 off ebay a few months ago as a VF+ with no indication of Pedigree...

Just got the book back from CGC last week as a VF- (certainly within the comfort level for a raw ebay purchase), but it also noted that this was the Winnipeg copy...

Does anyone here know for sure whether there *is* a copy of 114 in Winnipeg (more than one?) or, even better, does anyone *own* a Winnipeg copy of 114?

I really have my doubts about this one and don't relish the idea of muddying up the Pedigree waters if I can help it.

I *think* something may have happened in this shipment as I also had a 121 that *is* part of the Winnipeg collection on the same invoice.  I have a feeling maybe there was some overlap especially since the 121 has the signature and 114 does not... any thoughts?  Thanks!

  8. Just lamenting out loud here... Had to have been early 2000's when I was working on completing a DD run and needed a #7...

At that time I'd been reading more and more the "collect what you like" articles, so I headed off to a Con looking for what I liked. (was it Heroes?  maybe a local Con in Hickory, NC... can't remember...)  Regardless, what I liked was DD... what I had was an ASM129, so let's make a trade!  Managed to find a guy with a DD7 in my price range to trade for my ASM129... we talked for a while, and while I wasn't totally into it, he convinced me it was a pretty straight deal, so I took it and filled the DD hole!

    Oops.

Finally submitted my 7 to CGC recently and requested a screen for pressing/restoration... Major color touch on the front cover...

    Double oops.

Hadn't opened this book since I bought it, and I certainly did not even know that much about resto issues at the time.  Just... blah.

If I had posted goals, this would have been high on my list. Pretty pumped about it!

and this is cool!  I picked up a copy of this this year too... still sitting in Sarasota, but I'm just hoping mine comes back at least a 5 (as I bought it as a 6.0... didn't notice the large piece missing on the upper right side)

Read more comics on my reading list.

which brings me to a question: Is a not as enjoyable to read a "classic" run as an adult that you never read as a kid/teenager? Sometimes I go back and read something I loved as a kid, and as an adult it just doesn't hold up meaning, perhaps, that if you didn't read something as a younger person, you just missed out.

I think this is definitely true... especially depending on your definition of "classic."  Lots of those old books that were squarely targeted at kids certainly feel that way now, and I just can't get into them.  I tried getting through some early Marvels with the Masterworks books and just couldn't do it.

I feel the same way about Catcher in the Rye... I first read that when I was like 36 and thought it was pretty dumb, but I'm pretty sure had I read it when I was 20 years younger it would have hit me in a much more positive way.

  11. I wrote a custom web UI that sits on top of a SQL server... tracking PurchaseDate, PricePaid, SoldDate, PriceSold, IsForSale, NeedToUpgrade, IsCGC, Grade, IssueNumber, Title, Publisher, Variant, Storyline, and Comments...

Front and Back cover scans + any additional scans (interior if necessary, pedigree documentation, whatever...)

about 15,000 books before I started trying to clean house...

Love having everything so accessible from pretty much anywhere... and having quick easy access to the scans.

I just have an open SQL page so I can report on pretty much whatever I can think of...

So much freaking work throughout the years, but it's worth it.

That's a generous 9.0 (no offense), and I'd be happy to have it. :foryou: I've only had one opportunity to buy a raw copy of this book and I couldn't (didn't) pull the trigger. It was at a garage sale in SF a while back, and the guy wanted $600 (a tad nicer than yours) but I just couldn't get myself to drop $600 at a garage sale. :sumo: :(

I totally agree as the front left spine seemed to have some thumbprints on it that, in combination with those spine ticks, would have killed it... was very surprised, but I'll take a win when it's handed to me :)

EDIT: I'm honestly just thankful it came back a Blue Label!

No.... :) no it is a paid service that doesn't require regrading....

Right, but my question is if, as suggested above, comics in older holders may begin to lose value (or prestige?) if there is no added protection and preservation of the grade what's to prevent people from just submitting for the reholder service?  What does CGC do if an encapsulated comic has clearly been damaged inside the holder but has no damage to the holder itself?
