It'd be great if some of the Yakima owners here could put up some pics of the interior pages of Yakimas and non-Yakimas (preferably from the same time period so we're getting apples to apples) to show what the difference in paper quality is like.

I'm curious on people's thoughts on pulp PQ and whether "Cream" pages will become a collectability dividing line like it has become in comics or whether it's so prevalent that it will have to be acceptable for anyone who wants to own more than a tiny pulp collection.

Reposting this, it's a pair of early 40s amazing stories.  One of my unrelated submissions got white pages, and they are pretty, but scanning various pulp slabs I've only seen a few with white pages so it would be tough to aim for that imp.

Got my second submission. Very happy with it. Also came back a bit better than I expected. Got it from Dave Smith years ago. My best grade Yakima. How often do you see white pages on a pulp?

This one also moves around in the slab due to the thickness. I contacted CGC and they noted that the process is new and they are working out the kinks. I suggested putting the thinner ones in a comic slab. :wishluck:

Was chatting with a comic shop owner today about yakimas.  Said he bought half the books, and sold most, but still has some nicer ones buried away in his attic (late 30s).  Sadly not interested in selling 😞

  3. All I really see is that people coming into pulps are mimicking what seems to have been somewhat common pulp collecting practices, namely cover/genre chasing.  I wouldn't mind a decent copy of Marvel Science Stories Aug 38, but not at $300.  Wave a nice uncanny tales under my nose at that price and I'd probably have to go look for my wallet.

I'm always curious what the etiquette on this is.  I feel kind of funny doing it.  At the same time I feel funny looking up values in-store.  And then there's the fact that I'll check comics against the scanner's wantlist, too.

I tend to just take a very quick picture and looking up later even though I don't think any of it does any harm.  Same thing with records since sometimes it's nice to listen to an album I'm curious about before buying.  I'll usually walk out of a good used record store with a stack of four or five but 10 or 20 pictures of albums to check out.

I feel like it would be rude to scan ebay while browsing, but sometimes I'll just tell the owner I'm not familiar with the comics or books and want to look them up later to see if I need them.  I try to be polite and respectful, and haven't had any issues where it got awkward.  😀

Are pb's being lain at your doorstep lol

I wish I got such service :insane:

Those Lovecraft Bart's look pretty good. Any fresh copy that has a good spine and colors and the main cover image uncreased is worth $50 retail, going up in inverse square to the lack of creases and wear.

Just lucky with a bookstore, owner said he picked these up a while ago and is losing money since no one is buying them.

If you dont mind me asking, are any of these worth grabbing?  Was planning to check ebay once I get in front of a desktop but figure you guys are more knowledgeable.

Looking for opinions: Horror Stories vs. Terror Tales. To those of you long 'in the know', in your mind is there any difference between them... pricing, rarity, cover/interior content? Or pretty much interchangeable?

I'll take a stab since no one has answered.  I'd say they're roughly interchangeable.   Terror Tales seems to be slightly more available,  a few more copies available on ebay, a few more sold listings on HA, a few more cgc graded copies, but like most pulps specific issue availability varies.  For prices, again it seems like they're largely cover and condition dependent, moreso than title specific.

They share a lot of similar cover style, starting with Gothic horror in early issues and shifting away from lurid covers in 38.  The interiors are also largely interchangeable, from what I've seen.

Im curious as to why they switched to a bi monthly schedule though.  I read about a bi monthly western editor using the bi monthly approach to sell more books even going so far as to run around new york stamping issues with next months date to extend the books time on the stands.

I wonder if they went with this approach as more competition hit the stands?  Their sales were still increasing, even to the point they surpassed street in Smith in 37 with 1.5 million books sold a month.  I know there are some posters in here with much more experience,  and I'd be curious to hear their take.

Graded pulps are starting to pour onto the 'bay, many with crazy prices. A look at "sold" listings shows very few greater fools so far from what I can see.

I guess we'll see if fear crushes greed as happens in exuberant markets from time to time, or vice versa...

A lot of graded pulps on HA tomorrow, a good number I wouldn't consider grading candidates.   Be interesting to see where the prices land for the lower grade common books.  On ebay, Dave smith sold a 4.0 startling stories witch book for 250, which looks like the grading helped, where another copy in 2.5 with a purple label sold for 66, which means the seller likely lost money.

I think lower grade common books will have been a bad call to get graded, where the nicer books will see a bump.

Kelly’s Comics in Great Falls has a pretty huge back issue selection, not much in the way of anything older than Moderns, though. He’s got a crazy amount of TPBs, games, dice, sculptures, Warhammer, etc. it’s like two stores worth of stuff crammed into one. Brooks is the owner, he’s an old buddy of mine - he’s had his shop for almost 30 years.

Kalispell has Comics Arcade, another comic shop - he just recently moved his location, but he is still in business. I haven’t been up there but I talk with him from time to time. He was an old customer of my comic shop in the 90s. Very nice guy, super knowledgeable and probably has a nice selection of all genres.

A trip to Montana would be great, we’ve gotten a lot of rain all over the state (some places too much) so that generally means fire season will not be as extreme this year. And if you plan on coming through Great Falls, give me a heads up if you decide to grab a burger and I’ll hook you up with some Roadhouse stuff!

I was just in kalispell a few days ago, and when I googled comic store, comics arcade popped up but I thought it was just a literal arcade based on name and first few Google photos.  😆  definelty checking it out next time I head out there.

Scored these today in a trade with a local guy. Blinding colors! Don’t have time to go through my FH Jungle and Jumbo comics but these covers seem real familiar. Possible swipes?

I have a handful of very high grade Jungle pulps. Due to their traditional low values, now might be a good time to have some of them graded.

A nice tip I got from Darwin is when they have that little text box at the bottom of the cover, they're often recycled covers.  Looks like it's reused art from v2n5

My favorite from the run, but I grew up watching bewitched 😆

With pulps I don't think you're going to find a number of covers considered classic over a long period of time, my pulp fanzines from the 60s and 70s focus on the stories and authors, and rarely mention the art.  By the 90s I have some pulp art books, but what they considered sought after covers has in some cases shifted over time.  One mentions this as the most sought after WT cover

    7260955f52af3bde9e14af85f0e59275.jpg.b32e5ae3d4350084d75777ea18e12bb6.jpg

Which judging by recent sales is no longer the case.  I could be wrong but I believe in the 90s the batwoman cover hadn't really broken out yet and was about as sought after as other brundage books.  I think moving forward we will see more solidification in what is considered a classic cover, but collectors can be fickle so that could still be a shifting target.

Barring everything else, I'd give a lot of weight to people more knowledgeable in the hobby like detective and Darwin to what books collectors are chasing based on cover, but also the old rule of thumb stands.  Books I own are classic covers, and books I still need are not and should be avoided by everyone until I get a copy
