  1. I wonder why the Thorpe and Porter stamps don't appear on my issues after No 30 approx?? They were definitely distributed in the UK as I bought them new at the time, along with the later bonkers Mighty Comics Presents issues. I also acquired some new Archie Pureheart the Powerfuls (but never saw any other regular Archie comics at that time). Perhaps they were distributed by someone other than T&P?

PS: Nicholas Lyndhurst of Only Fools fame (not featured in the above clip however) now appears in the re-booted Frasier.

PPS: I assume the phase "Only fools and horses" is familiar in the US with its unwritten last word "work"??

  3. It’s funny how you use the word “foreign “ as I don’t think it applies so much in the UK. We embrace the whole world. I love your comics but I also love UK comics and European comics. What car do you drive? I have a British car … a Bond…look it up… and a German car… an Opel…..and an American car… a Mustang V8

If you discount stuff from anywhere else as inferior I think it is you that are missing out.

It's not the accent (for most viewers at least) it's the vernacular, slang, and location specific jokes and commentary that don't translate as well or as completely.

I've never understood the US resistance to UK TV. Here in the UK we managed to make some sort of sense of your TV no matter how weird and different to our lifestyles it was from the Lucy Show, Petticoat Junction, Bonanza, Van Dyke, Rhoda to whatever current stuff is streaming. Perhaps you might have enjoyed Man about the House if you'd been able to see it. How did you get on with The Avengers (Steed and Emma etc) or Doctor Who?

For the longest time people assumed that the US AF 15 was printed a month before the UK Pence version because the US Version has an "Aug" (8/62) designation on the cover and the Pence only has a September, 1962 designation on the inside indicia. The stink of "reprint" (even inaccurate) stuck for long time.

Won't the US version have September 1962 on the inside indicia as the comics are the same apart from the different price on the cover and the omission of the month date. The UK pence Marvels then had the month removed because due to their long journey otherwise they would have been out of date by the time they went on sale. And as our AF15 is possibly ten times rarer than yours (due to substantially fewer being printed) then it ought to sell for a similar price if not more.

  5. Is he positive that the remaindered MADs were definitely 2/- UK ones at half price originally published by T&P rather than US ones?

I recall Woolworths selling Cracked magazines in the mid 1960s and as I’ve mentioned before at various times they sold DCs, Dells and King comics at 6d each. Woolworths would have had their own US connections to get things directly I would have assumed rather than go through T&P but of course anything is possible.

  6. My theory is that it was a planned change to send us DCs with pence prices that was aborted at the last moment.
Perhaps someone authorised it and then someone higher up said “what are we then going to do with our returns? Those mugs in the UK have been giving us good money for old leftovers as well as all those pallets full that never even found their way out of the printers for a decade now. It seems a shame to go back to pulping the returns once more.”

  7. @Garystar Well done for spotting that. I put it there deliberately to prove my theory that someone on this thread would notice. Alas it has a cover price of $3.99 so is worth less than the Outer Space 3 but still a nice thing to find in the box . Amongst other interesting stuff I might post about later there was a Marvel Tales that will still be worth 20p that is sdrawkcab.

  8. I still have the pre recorded Avengers VHS tape that contains that particular episode. Saved that and just a handful of others. Pity the VHS player is in the loft. Too wet to go out so I opened a box this morning that was last seen a decade ago. In fact it does say "2013" on the lid. And it did indeed contain comics and magazines published that year along with a few older ones I'd "lost" or in the case of Alan Class cover plates had no recollection of purchasing. This Spidey was a nice find even though Gladys gave it an unnecessary stamp.
