I keep hoping that restoration on key GA books will become less and less of a stigma as time passes and prices keep going up.

+1 Yep I think this is already happening as books become scarcer and scarcer. I really have no problem with restoration if it's disclosed. The only restoration I actively dislike is trimming and I try to avoid that (but I even broke that rule recently since the discount was very high)

  2. I agree with others that 0.5 is very harsh for this book. I've seen books with completely split covers in 1.8 (for GA) and 1.5 (for SA). Granted, their covers weren't as tattered. I think this should be a 1.0 to bring it out of the grade where completely destroyed or incomplete books reside. If you're planning to sell it, I think potential buyers will also pay a premium over typical 0.5 prices.

On a more serious note though, did that highest graded copy even sell for $799.99 since that appears to be the initial BIN price and it is then crossed out which means a even slightly lower Best Offer price might actually have been accepted on the book.  hm  (shrug)  :takeit:

I have never understoodthe rationale for a seller to offer a high quality book like this one here on what is basically nothing more than a global flea marketplace where all of the bottom feeders go to do their shopping.  Especially when most people with the deeper pockets are probably not willing to go onto a site like eBay every single day to search through millions upon millions of worthless drek to find that one piece of treasure that they might just be looking for to add into their collection.  :gossip:

Makes even less sense from a pure numbers point of view since the eBay and PayPal fees to sell the item is actually more than the fees for either CC or CL, and on top of that, you have to do all of the work yourself in terms of listing, shipping, and dealing with all customer related issues.  From a pure customer targeting point of view, wouldn't a high profile comic book auction site also be much more suitable since it would be filled with quality eyeballs willing to dig deep deep into their pockets for quality books exactly like this, as opposed to bottom feeders looking for the lowest prices possible who would never ever think of spending anywhere close to 4-figures for a book like this in the first place.  hm  doh!

I can't comment from a seller's point of view as I don't know all details around eBay fees vs. various auction house fees. But as a buyer, eBay is just another channel to look for books. I haven't had a negative experience with it and I've picked up numerous mega-keys and smaller books from it. There are many respected sellers who use the platform and run regular auctions. I also set up search alerts for books I'm looking for. I do see lots of aspirational (i.e. outrageous) pricing with the BINs but I can filter that out and look for auction listings. Raw books are risky as grading can be all over the place but again, you can find sellers you trust or just buy slabbed books. I'm not trying to shill for eBay here, but just pointing out that I use it alongside all the other channels and you can stumble upon some good deals.

Im not sure I could buy a qualified green label, only because I am a completist.  A missing Marvel Stamp I might swing at the right price, but top dollar for a comic missing an entire page is disaster to me. In my 40 +years of collecting, I have some with a missing page or two, and when I come across one, it bugs me.  I know thats my choice.

You all make excellent arguments. I agree with Gaard however, its either this or that. It cant be “kinda this, sorta this, so we decide its this”. There has to be a static standard.  I buy a comic, its in the condition that it is in, incomplete, intact, complete, or pristine. To me, there is no other option.

I like that there is nuance to grading in our hobby. I don't think the Qualified label introduces any ambiguity; after all, it is a completely different color and gives more information to an interested buyer. I'm happy that there is an option for that 9.2 X-Men you're talking about--that's the sort of information that lets me make an informed buying decision.

  5. I think this should be an easy pass if it's the one on eBay. You mentioned wanting to crack it from the slab (which I fully support!) so in that case you would want the complete copy to read and enjoy. As others have said, trying to track down and marry the missing pages will end up being expensive and probably frustrating. Even if you were to find the missing centerfolds, it's likely the staples don't line up or the pages were cut differently so the married pages stick out.

I will chime in here and defend "slightly brittle" pages. I previously avoided the designation as well but a GA megagrail came along and the "slightly brittle" pages made it more affordable. I cracked the book and was surprised that the brittleness was isolated to only 1 corner of the book and vast majority of the surface area of the pages were supple.

    Good luck with your decision!

@Matt G Matt, the below registry number is still valid. Please remove it and update CGC census for Detective 31.

    Much appreciated.

Thanks for showing the progression. I actually went and looked at this book in person at Metropolis (the asking price was a little too much for me). I knew it had a slight bump from 1.5 to 1.8 when I did my own research but did not know there was also a 1.0 previous state.

It's unfortunate that tape was added between the 1.0 and the 1.5 version. I wonder if that was done to take advantage of CGC's pre-2013 previous stance on tape?

I'm also confused that the detached cover notation is missing from the 1.8 (even if it is re-attached with tape). Is this the standard policy?

  7. Yeah I think the MCU is just on another level in terms of popularity and fandom. Is it safe to say that Groot is now more popular than most of DC's superheroes outside of Batman and Superman?

And to your point I think availability does play into it. The DC keys tend to be Golden Age books which are ultra-rare, ultra-expensive, or both. The Marvel keys are obviously in the Silver Age and inherently more accessible for collectors.

As to why WandaVision vs. DC TV shows... again I think it's tied back to how Disney has executed the MCU. Because it's one universe, even small appearances in one corner of the MCU are amplified and drive up more hype. DCEU is still trying to finds its legs and while there are some good DC TV shows in the Arrowverse, not being tied to DCEU does hurt it.
