  1. Granted, not complaining, just curious. A total change in my collection habits changed this past year. While I always liked Captain Marvel (more than Supes), my favourite was Batman (I am very original that way). And 10 years ago I bought what I could afford with GA books, which accounted for a mere handful of nice issues from Batman and Detective. They were expensive then, and they only grew since. What I find nuts was seeing the left over prices behind the boards they came in, which showed prices they sold at in another era. Seeing a handwritten scribble marking $100 on the back of a book I bought for $400 shows me a window to a cheaper time for Golden age. But then I discovered Fawcett. What was interesting though was the price. They too were as cheap as other superhero golden age books back in the day (20-30 years ago), but unlike others, they didn't increase in the price. Either in prices sold on auction or in the price guide. Some even went down in the span of 15-20 years. Here's an example, below is a Whiz Comics 88 in 9.0, CGC. There are none graded higher than that. And it sells for around $150 USD. That means grading it professionally cost a third of it's worth on the market. And that's also consistently selling below the guide price which is just a bit over $200 (which in itself is quite cheap). So a slabbed book with the highest grade selling 25% less than guide, consistently. That's just one example. I just purchased a pedigree copy of Marvel Family 3, in those nice new golden CGC slabs for lower than guide as well. I see no indication that these books are less rare than other golden age superhero comics (you don't find that many Bulletman comics out there, for instance) and yet, you can get decent looking Fawcett comics for as low as $50 a piece, in auction. So my question is, why are all these comics still so damn low? (Also, if you do have any Bulletman for these low low prices, let me know )
  2. If it's your lowest price, it's your lowest price. Nothing else can be said. Clearly there is interest in your books so if you don't sell to him, you'll sell to someone else. No returns just means they can't return it without reason. If they say it's not as described, e-bay can force a return (or a full refund through paypal). There have been instances of abusing this.
  3. Oh that last part I know. Some of the books I bought on have the old prices of what they were selling for in the 90s written in the back and it makes me wish I was around with disposable income back then.
  4. That's how I feel. I agree that things could be better. The OP writes about questionable scans but my issue is more like lack of scans. Bot me and Heritage auctions would have benefited from less grief if they bothers posting the back of comics. But I do like that with auctions, you know you are buying at market price (something LCS don,t do, though I've never seen an LCS sell much golden age stuff). Also, in regards to fees the IP described, the final price you pay is unaffected. For instance, no one thinks of the buyer's premium at HA.com as an extra fee on top of what you'd bid, you just incorporate it into your bid. I have had enough issues on e-bay to ignore it. HA has its problems but I am glad to have someone between me and a seller for books where a slight issue might mean a difference of over 100$. As for other places I get golden age books, Harley Yee at conventions is the only person I have a perfect track record with. His grading is excellent. And buying off him means you are contributing to the price guide, which is always fun for me. To be fair, I only ever knew this world of GA collecting as it is in the past 10 years so I can't really say if it was better before. But I don't really see a dillema.
  5. Is there a Pedigree for a girl who would hand-write her name "Evelyn" on the cover?
  6. I'll be honest, I couldn't read the whole thing (the language was just too abrasive), but I did see something that I agreed with. if the plan is you can buy 3 if you buy 1 and 2 then I am ok with it. My local shop only sold to people that were subbed so I get it. You are still getting it for retail price so that's fair and the shop gets to clear out unsold inventory. Really wish the second printing would have a different cover, to make it something fun for people who couldn't get issue 3 though.
  7. Oh man that breaks my heart. Many of those books are irreplaceable (grade wise)
  8. Does CGC not have insurance for damaged books in their posession?
  9. Thanks Lions Den. I do wonder something though. Say there is no damage to the book itself or the inner well. BUT the seal being broken (as appears to be the case). How would CGC know that either the person who recieved the book or the seller didn't break it open and switched a signed book with another of a lesser graded holder (say a 9.4) ?
  10. I've seen that S as well on other books. But I remember being told that was a known designation retailers used as a shorthand. I forgot what it was though.
  11. Classic storylines work really well as trade paperbacks, you have the whole story at once. So casual fans are less likely to care to pick up the individual issues. You don't get that with first appearances.
  12. Still happens now. Some books from Morrison's X-Men run sell for far more than cover price these days due to first appearances and yet I have some of those with price stickers (on the bag containing them) at half the cover price.
  13. What the hell happened with the shipping?! Looks like it was slugged half way to kingdome come. Anyways, I have been on the seller end of such a transaction, though it was never this bad. If there was some damage through the shipping and the buyer made me aware of that, I would refund the cost of a reholder. I wasn't sent an image so maybe I was lied to, but I gave the buyer the benefit of the doubt. I am curious of one thing though, can a reholder work now? The seal is broken so that removes the grade guarantee, doesn't it?
  14. Captain America Annual 8 Detective Comics 73 I was gonna say Legends of the Dark Knight 50 but that book is being sold still quite cheap so whatever.
  15. Sounds like a no brainer for immediate sale at your upcoming shows.
  16. Silver Surfer 3. Been trying to get one for a good price, but it just seems to keep going just a bit higher than I'm comfortable with. Also ASM 14 is doing pretty damn well for itself.
  17. Excuse me, WHAT?! Popularity in Spider-man rose to an all time high in the past 5 years when he finally became part of the MCU. And they also portrayed a younger spidey, and a comic accurate one power wise. And he starred in 2 of the biggest movies of all time, along with his own films. Plus, just think about it, a Spider-man movie won best animated film at the 2019 oscars. Plus both his creator died 2 years ago making their work even more brought to the forefront to the entire world with homages and remembrances, with Spidey being their most famous creation. So the surge of the past 5 years has a bunch of factors to explain it. We are nose deep in this stuff so we might not seen it, but the past 5 years have made Spidey more popular than ever before.
  18. Question unrelated to Whitman: I have sealed comics from this era (but from DC). Is it best to keep them sealed or take them out? The plastic feels horrendous on the outside, but the comics look nice in the inside. Not sure if I am doing better keeping them sealed or not. I do find it fun to have sealed comics from the 70s.
  19. If it helps you with the offer, know that after fees the seller wouldn't make more than 150 on e-bay. Let us know how much you buy it for.
  20. The pen marks have very little to do with the grade of this particular book in that condition. The main issue is that ton of staining and the spine. this is not a 5.0. The reason you are able to get it for not a ton of money is because it is in bad shape and most likely cannot be improved upon with pressing (the stains). If the price you are paying is less than 175$, then that's fine. If not, then you aren't getting a deal.
  21. Sure thing here is the qualified comic I found. https://comics.ha.com/itm/silver-age-1956-1969-/the-amazing-spider-man-14-marvel-1964-condition-qualified-vf/a/121130-10029.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515 And I compared it to the next VF sold that same year. I know it's been a while but I could not find something more recent for comparison. And yeah, no one is giving away copies of ASM 14, those prices are really rough for really rough comics. I wish you all the best!
