  1. That is truly disappointing. Very much so Sorry I am getting back to everyone so late but the above post is pretty much the explanation I received when I was at CGC. I was waiting to talk to Paul and harshen at the show (WW Chicago) to see what the long term approach was...but it appears they have answered all of my questions already.
  2. joeypost was a nickname I received back in my serious hockey playing days. I used to cling the pipes at least once or twice a game. It started with "Joe hitting the post again" and was shortened to joeypost. If you met me in person you would understand the avatar.
  3. I don't remember starting this thread.
  4. Wow. I am upset for a few reason. The fact I look hung over in that photo being #1. Three hours of sleep will do that to you. Every con I see you at, you are in awesome spirits on Thursday, and you look like grim death on Sunday! That's going to be the formula for WW Chicago. Only I am starting on Wednesday morning

  6. I don't see it on a lot of books, and when I do it is varying degrees of indents and waves leading me to believe it is during the sealing process. But I could be completely wrong.
  7. The raised "pocks" are not sharp. They are like little tiny beads of round plastic. It would put a dent in the book, but I doubt it would scratch it. I will be at CGC on Friday and will talk to whoever is there (and not at SDCC) about it.
  8. Not all the slabs have this. It is far and few between, but it does show up. Joey: let's say a comic is stored with that warping for a long time. Do you feel that the defects could be pressed out easily? Quite easily, if it even made an indentation. If you look at the actual image you will notice some areas that have "pock" marks. Some of these are raised like little pimples and those could put small indents into the book over time similar to the book getting poked with a pencil point.

  10. Here is a picture of a recent inner well I cracked out. This one is particularly bad as it has deep ripples and even raised areas that could indent the comic.
  11. I sent in 4 cracked out slabs (all 9.8's) for a Romita signing. None came back 9.8. This is no fault of the facilitator or any rough handling of the books. That is one hell of a risk to take. I persuaded one collector who had a Bats #227 graded as a 9.6 to leave it as it is, even though he wanted to crack it out and have Adams sign it, just in case it came back a lower grade and that was a 9.6. To de-slab a 9.8 in order for Romita to sign it is far too risky. I take it from your post that that didnt even all come back a 9.6 so you have to ask yourself whats better a 9.8 or a lower graded copy signed by the artist. I dont know, i suppose you will get different answers from different collectors These were not super expensive Spideys. Most were in the 113-157 range.
  12. Cal took it. Paid for it and left feedback for me. A flawless transaction.

They must be hit or miss because their pretentious 9.8 killing seems to have gotten better for me. I'm not saying it will stay that way, but for now I'm ok with them. Aside from these 4 books I am happy with the results I have been getting back. I saw no need to press a cracked out 9.8 slab upon re-submission. Appears I was wrong.

  15. I cracked a book that had this inner well issue - it was only on the inner well, there was no damage to the book. The books I have cracked out had no damage. Only concern I would have is in the very long term. If a surface that has an imperfection is pressed against the cover of a comic for long enough it will create an indentation on the book. Think cover flaps that are tucked back into the bag against the comic or stickers on covers that leave an impression over time due to improper storage.
  16. I have cracked out a few slabs that have this problem. If you run your finger over the area in question it is not smooth like the rest of the inner well.
  17. Yeah I hate it when they look structurally great and then they're basically dust...I certified a number of those type of books and they came out 9.0/9.2 and a few 9.4 but they looked a lot better. Long since sold. I cried with Joey. Little smoky smell on some of them as well. The PQ was CRM/OW and better. The covers were the problem. Severe tanning on many. Almost a burnt look to them. Yet most of the certified ones were W or OW/W.
