  1. Check out each 3rd party pressers processes and rates. You will find your answer.
  2. There are some who claim they can without detection from CGC. But, it includes bleaching agents which will impact the integrity of the paper fibers. It’s a trade off in presentation vs. conservation. I would imagine CGC will get better detecting these cleaned books and give them the appropriate label. Personally, it is not something I am interested in doing.
  3. Back in 2003/4 I started selling books for a comic dealer here in central Florida. He had thousands of long boxes stored in an un-air conditioned warehouse. Some of the boxes had books that were not bagged and boarded. Interestingly foxing would show up on random books, and in rare cases small clusters of books. These boxes always contained the same issue of a particular title which led me to believe it may be what went into the manufacturing process along with environmental issues.
  4. Keep in mind there was a rush in getting books in before the price hike and a Slew of private signings.
  5. Done properly, a press will remove the indents from the writing and not affect the glue on the spine.
  6. Just a heads up. If you sent in modern books on 9/22 with no fast track you still have a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong wait head of you. I still have books from June that haven't moved out of scheduled for grading yet.
  7. I have to ask why you brought this up in the first place, if you are pressing your own books and have a tried-and-true formula?
  8. At one point I would have thought this kind of post to be a joke, but after watching some of the pressing videos on YouTube and facebook it may be a valid one.
  9. If you really want to learn, learn through trial and error. Put the time in and don’t be lazy. While most techniques that are shared online are shortcuts and sheer stupidity, there are a few gems of wisdom there.
  10. To answer the OP’s original question about pressing adding color breaks, the answer is no. If done correctly any indents, non-color breaking creases and waves will come out without adding any damage. What does happen in some cases is that the crease has small color breaks associated with it before pressing. Once pressed with the book now lying flat, the small color break is more pronounced.
  11. 20 graders would have to average a book per 60-75 seconds in an average 8 hour day.
  12. That’s all listed in the details of the signing. Not sure if fast tracking is included in the price.
  13. There are still many that won’t. But…there are multiples more that do.
  14. Absolutely. Now it is crossing over into another page/cover whitening technique that is going to damage many more books. I cannot tell you how many books I see at shows, on eBay or even get in to work on that have been poorly dry cleaned and pressed. Everyone is an expert in their own eyes, didn’t you know? All with zero disclosure, even if you ask.
  15. And to be honest, the private signings should be subject to the same waiting periods as regular submissions. I am sure they are one of the reasons for TAT’s being horrendous.
  16. Certain additives will accelerate the paper degradation. Peroxide is a “bleaching” agent. It does affect the integrity of the paper fibers. The market will soon be flooded with books done by amateurs with zero disclosure. I would imagine that this type of work, if disclosed, would result in few sales. One good thing is that it is now on CGC’s radar.
