My question is what do you like to collect and why?  Are you a Spidey fan that is nostalgic for those 80s black costume issues and want them in your collection?  Or are you just interested in buying hot books because they are hot as speculation?

I wouldn’t buy them expecting them to go up a lot from here, TBH.

If you are speculating, I prefer the strategy of finding something cool that isn’t super hot right now, rather than piling into the same few books that everyone seems to be chasing currently.

FYI, I’m a Spidey collector that started in the 80s, so I own all three books.  I’ve actually considered getting my 300 graded and selling it because I think the money it is going for right now is silly.   I probably won’t, since my Spidey run is the core of my collection, but I question how sustainable this runup is.

Thanks for the feedback. I both like the books and I’m definitely speculating a bit. But you make a good point about not jumping on something at the same time as everyone else. At the same time I get this feeling especially about the 300 that it’s going to be one of the easiest books to sell for a long long time.

  2. I’m terrible at speculating on comics. I always buy what I like without thinking about future value, then when I see an otherwise random comic shoot up in price all I can do is watch from the sideline because it’s almost never what I’m collecting.

That being said I’ve been thinking about these 3 books (I realize they’re pretty obvious choices). But as new collectors enter the hobby I get the feeling these 3 are some of the first keys they become aware of and they may even remember seeing them on the rack back in the day.

Personally I don’t understand why the black costume is so important. It’s not worn by Spidey these days. The 300 I can understand a little better because of McFarlane. Although when it hit the stands I thought it was a terrible cover ha, but I’ve grown to like it along with the other two.

I’m curious what you think about this. Will they continue to climb or are they close to reaching their max value?

I’m mainly a BA collector so I am pretty clueless about these books and I apologize if this is an obvious question.

  3. I know there’s a topic for this already but I can’t find it so I apologize for that.

If you have Netflix there is a new show called The Queen’s Gambit. Takes place in the early 60’s. Go to season 1, episode 2. Fast forward to where there’s 41:20 remaining (not sure if every Netflix player is the same but mine only shows time remaining in the bottom right corner of the player).

The actress walks across the street and into a shop. There’s a spinner rack full of comics. They did a great job with authenticity.

It’s pretty cool check it out. I would post a screen grab but Netflix no longer allows that.

  4. While scanning some books I began to notice this mark on a huge portion of my BA comics, mainly 20 or 25 cent books, only Marvel. All in relatively the same location, upper left-hand corner. Every mark is pretty much identical.

Any idea what it’s from specifically. Some type of printing mark but I’m curious if anyone knows what causes it or if anyone else has noticed it before on their books.

I put more effort into setting up these pics then any answer could possibly be worth but I didn’t have anything else better to do ha.

Also while we’re at it can/does anyone want to name all eight books. Most should be pretty easy.

First picture gives the clearest look at the mark.

Second picture I’ve circled the mark for each of the eight books.

Last picture is just for guessing the books if anyone wants to try.

Hopefully you’re able to see what I’m talking about.

16,300 books - focus. . . Well, it was meant to be just all mutant books, but that did not last. I stop my pull list several years ago, as being a completist, I could not keep up with all the variants - it was getting too expensive. I am happy with my collection but my focus now jumps around, for example, one week I want to complete my Daredevil volume 1 run from the first Frank Miller, then the next I want to complete my Peter Parker Spider-man. I know what you are thinking - they are not mutants. . . I know I veered of course.

So in conclusion, my focus, is to remain unfocused. :shy:

I’m only about 16,000 books behind you 😂

There was once a board member,  @MutantKeys I believe. He put together a collection of high grade XMen books and used to say RE lack of focus... "this is why your collection sucks."

I've always remembered that phrase as it relates to my own collecting.

I remember him. If I remember correctly he was putting together the Claremont run in 9.8. If he held on to them he did pretty good. It was prior to the first big Spider-Man movie and all the subsequent superhero movies including all the X-Men and related films.

  7. Good to hear most folks are for the most part satisfied with their collection.

Forgot to mention yesterday Warren Magazines. There are times I’ve thought I should sell everything off and start going after complete runs of Famous Monsters, Creepy, Eerie, Blazing Combat, Vampirella etc.etc. and of course Mad and Cracked.

It’ll never happen but my mind does wonder.

  8. Are you happy with the focus of your collection? Do you ever wish you had more discipline in a certain area/genre? If so what would it be? There are times I look at a collector like bigfiver69 and think how cool it would’ve been to really focus on silver and bronze war books. Or Silver and his awesome collection of SA DC superhero books.

Instead my collection is really all over the place. I’m not complaining but there are times I’ve thought about switching it all up.
