  1. It's correct to say that C/P is not without risk, and the potential gains are minimized by the heavy tanning. Someone who's accustomed to working with old, potentially delicate books should look at this in-person b/c we'd all be making WAGs about weighing the risks/benefits from photos. In addition to the tanning, I see a stain of some sort around the word 'Loki' and the long color breaking crease through the TRFC. The best this comes in is a 5.0, and I am closer to a 4.5.
  2. sounds more like a tape pull or similar. A stain would just be discoloration not structural damage to the paper. Wetness that caused the surface to rub of would be a little bit of both worlds.
  3. these clearly break color, so there's a limit to what pressing can achieve. Flattening things out might make it look a little better (or get non-color breaking creases that aren't obvious in photos), but they can't be fixed.
  4. 4.5/5.0 b/c of the sun shadow? around the edges, the tears round the staples, rusty staples and doesn't appear to lie flat. A very skilled presser might boost this up a bit since it's a GA book
  5. that was my first instinct, so I'm either being educated or misled by the CGC Guidebook Their description is somewhat vague for 0.5, but sounds like you're dealing with something that's borderline trash (big parts missing, or damage that make it look less like a comic). Of course, the samples of 0.5s in the book are relatively attractive considering the grade. I probably didn't need a photo to know what one of those top 1/2 of the cover cut off by distributors looked like
  6. I have no personal experience with this level of damage and the cumulative defects are not clearly delineated in the CGC guide, but as long as all the parts of the book are present and there are no pieces missing, I'd say 1.0 is where this lands. If there was staining too, that might dip the grade to 0.5, but all I see is heavy tanning/oxidation.
  7. I didn't know much about these fanzines until I found PGM. A lot of collectors seem interested in previews of big comics like GS X-Men (and a couple of issues with "1st" appearances on the cover), but I've been more intrigued by some cover art by artist like Byrne & Milgrom that doesn't appear elsewhere. Got a decent size stack for a reasonable price. Not really sure how to grade these being completely newsprint-like paper. The color covers seem a bit more susceptible to losing color along the spine. I might try to find a better copy of this one at some point b/c I like the art.
  8. I maintain of "want list" on CPG that is at least 50% me just tagging interesting books when I learn about them. I was cleaning up the list the other day & re-discovered a tag, with no recollection why I had singled out a French metal magazine since the CPG site didn't have a cover photo. Long story short, I read about this somewhere around the time The Rise of Skywalker came out b/c it has, like the movie, C3PO with red eyes on the cover. An ebay search, $15 inc. shipping, and 3 or so weeks waiting for mail from France later, I have a copy. I don't see any C3PO inside, so just the cover. I did find a Steranko story called "Outland' inside. The story also appeared in Heavy Metal magazine around the same time in 1981. Not sure about the connection between the magazines. A lot of overlap, but also looks like they're published independently? Nice shape. A small spine split at the bottom corner. Interested in the grade, although this is high on the novelty of ownership list rather than a serious grading candidate. Thought people might find it interesting too.
  9. 4.0/4.5. The creasing along the spine is not immediately obvious, but when you zoom in there's quite a bit.
  10. Stains are CGC killers. If a good cleaner could even lighten it, I think it would help a lot. Those spine stress lines around the middle of the book are pretty long too. 5.0±0.5
  11. Looks like some tanning. IDK why, but the few DC books I have from this era seem to all have this issue more so that books from other publishers. The two corners set the upper limit around 7.0 Maybe a 7.5, but I'd put more money on 7.0
  12. 6.0/6.5. The one corner crease & the longer than usual spine stress lines are just enough to knock this down from the 7s or higher b/c it looks pretty sharp otherwise. The edges of these silver age books are often an issue, but doesn't look to be so here.
  13. 4.5±0.5. There's enough color-breaking creasing/wear up & down the cover along the spine & rounded corners that add to the oxidation to keep this below fine. Especially the oxidation.
  14. Welcome! I might see some light bends show up in the glare, or it could be nothing. Either way, that would be pressable. Looks ≥9.2, probably at least a grade higher than the lower limit. It's really hard to grade books in the NM & better categories without having them in hand, so I tend to avoid giving a specific guess above 9.2. PWJ was one of the titles I picked up as a teenager getting into being a "real" collector. The Jim Lee run was my favorite.
  15. Welcome! I'm at 2.0 I'm a little curious about the dark top edge in the full shot of the back cover. Not sure why it looks like that. It's not my specialty, but I don't see a lot of upside in pressing. All the creases are heavy & color breaking. Not a lot to improve and risk in causing damage as it looks pretty worn
  16. One small corner crease short of being the guaranteed top census grade
  17. Another +75 year old that looks way better than it has any right to. I do see some possible issues on the outer corners. Would like to see some crisper photos since the enlargements aren't sharp. Definitely looks like there's some fade in the red of the title. It's hard for me to know how much to penalize for fade in a book this age, and red seems to be the most susceptible to it. I'm gonna guess 9.0/9.2, perhaps higher as a GA (tops in the census looks like 9.4), maybe lower if those corners are worse than I think from the photos.
  18. 4.5/5.0. Between the tearing along the spine & the stains, I think an otherwise attractive book gets knocked down into the VGs
  19. In my experience, CGC has been quite unforgiving with stains. This one doesn't look too bad, but I'll say 8.0/8.5
  20. I've seen examples that are much worse. Not much here that obscures the cover art. 7.5/8.0. I see some corner blunting & minor edge wear. Maybe a little higher with luck
  21. High grades of these old books are probably locked away in PCs
  22. 6.5/7.0 seems about right b/c the black background makes the spine stress show more prominently than other colors. If the corners were in better shape, 7.5 would be more reasonable. I briefly forgot about the tear art on this cover and wondered how anyone could advertise anything greater than 0.5 with long tears like that
  23. 7.0±0.5 for the defects you highlighted, esp the tear and what seems like a back cover that's got some discoloration.
