  1. Graders notes? I'd post in the comic grading & restoration issues thread as the ?majority? of people chatting here are not actually doing cleaning. CGC doesn't like that kind of grime certainly. 8.0 is a high grade IMO for that amount of soiling/staining, so you'd run the risk of coming back lower if the clean after crack was not successful
  2. Update on this book. The comic CGC returned from the TM signing, was not the one we sent They sent back a 7.5 newsstand. No Mark Jewelers. I am mentally preparing for this to be the 2nd book they sent to the wrong recipient and will never be able to find again. The first was a DC Comics Presents 47 Newsstand that I sent for a DeCarlo signature that came back as a signed/sketched Direct Edition. Because I'm an honest person, someone will eventually get back their book (if it ever exits Mechanical Error Hell), but I learned that one should maximize the claimed value so you're not shopping for replacement books on a limited budget. At least they're only losing harder to find variants
  3. I do see the shadow, but I never know the different between a dust or sun shadow. In principle, a dust shadow can be removed, but a sun shadow can't. IMO a "newer" book like this will be judged more harshly than a SA or GA book with the same issue. 8.0/8.5
  4. 4.0±0.5. The long crease across & then down the spine are enough to get this down to the VG range alone, so the tearing on the back brings it to the lower end of that range. It presents well enough that 3s seem too low, but not impossible
  5. Comics convinced me that Hostess Fruit pies were the bees knees. Even as a kid, I believe they were always disappointing
  6. This one was not in my key issues pile, but I came across it for my Thorsday IG nonsense. I discovered it's listed as a key for the backup story with several Inhumans origins. Anyhoo, I believe this is the best looking Thor so far from my SA run. Cover colors are bold and glossy. Inside doesn't show much aging. Kind of surprised it's this nice.
  7. 8.0/8.5 from me too b/c of the scuffing & color rub on the back. More 8.0 than 8.5. I have seen a few comics grading in the 9s with some level of this time of defect on the back cover. These were all ads on black back covers with the same ad from the same era (possible printing defect?), so I don't think it would be an apples to apples comparison. As for grading, even though I'm not familiar with this series, the online sale prices make this specific book look like one that I would pass on. If I wanted a graded copy as a collector, I would look for a better copy and invest in it while promising myself that I would sell the lower grade issue to offset the cost. Then after buying the better copy, I would just keep the other one in my ever growing "comics to sell that I will never sell" pile
  8. Looks like a 5.0/5.5, but if it's brittle, maybe 4.0/4.5.
  9. That's my rule of thumb, I having everything pressed b/c wasting the occasional $20 (or less) expense will avoid missing a few finger bends that cost a grade or 2 and then having to consider the hassle/expense of going through the whole process again. TBF I have very few "perfect" books that wouldn't benefit from a basic press.
  10. tear of that type/length caps the grade around 9.2. Maybe 9.4 for an otherwise perfect book since it's on the back. I'd guess this grades out at 9.0/9.2 with a standard press to take care of any minor handling issues
  11. I assume spine splits are the main grader notes?
  12. So, it's hard to value this book b/c there aren't a lot of sales., but a 7.0 might sell for ~$200 so a 7.5 or 8.0 is still still going to max out at <$300. I'd expect at least half of the bump in value to be eaten up by new c/p & grading fees. To me, this is an attractive collectable as is, and isn't going to look orders of magnitude better no matter what. I'd be happy with it as is.
  13. It does look like that top edge could be improved by pressing. The book looks structurally sound (always my caveat that someone who does this professionally should check that out before smashing it). That tanning/foxing on the inside bottom edge and inner page bottom is probably the capping defect (do more of the inner pages look like this?). I'll say 5.5±0.5, but will present nicely b/c the tanning is mostly internal (unless what's on the outside just doesn't show well in photos). You've stumbled into a little gold mine of comics. Great to see a stash like this come to light https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/9eb533ff-811c-4662-9adb-186adbb33ed1
  14. I was looking on my phone when you first posted, but I thought I could see the stain along the top. It's clearer on my laptop. I agree with the 7.0/7.5 consensus. CGC just doesn't tolerate staining & (IMO) penalizes stains that aren't obtrusive (i.e. light, on the back cover) a bit too harshly.
  15. solid. Maybe the slightest blunting on the BRFC. ≥9.4
  16. This book has seen some things. I'd guess the apparent structure damage knocks this down to at least a 2.0. Maybe a 1.8 depending on the spine split and tearing around the staples.
  17. From a CGC perspective, stains are heavily penalized and there is definitely fading and some other wear. You might get a 3.0 out of this, but I'm closer to a 2.5 b/c of what seems like extensive loss of color.
  18. I am having trouble seeing the stain, CGC hates stains, so it probably helps that it's as light as it apparently is. The creases alone would take this down to at least 6.0/6.5, so I offer 5.0/5.5 taking into account the stain and other small defects. Pretty attractive copy though
  19. 7.0 as is, 7.5 w/C/P. The edges on the front cover, especially the bottom, are a little rough. A small crease on the TLBC & light soiling on back cover. Maybe an indention or something on the BRBC?
  20. All things considered, the white here looks pretty good at least compared to some white covers I own from the same era. I see a short 1/4"-1/2" tear below the torch, and some light oxidation of paper (I don't think this is foxing, but wouldn't put $$$ on my analysis). 7.5/8.0. I could see an 8.5 if cleaning lightened up the white just a little.
  21. 4.0/4.5, leaning 4.0 b/c of the accumulated length of color breaking creases. Is that a small tear on the TRBC?
  22. I'm wavering on a grade here. In addition to the structural issues, the stains have me thinking 1.0, but I've seen examples of GA books, especially older ones, grading out higher than what the damage would appear to warrant. I'll say 1.5, with a chance at 1.8. Not sure I see a 2.0.
