This is real deep hardcore fandom stuff, but back in the late 50's  Roy Thomas (yes that Roy Thomas and Jerry Bails - a Uni Professor) lead a campaign to revive a lot of DC Golden Age heroes. (which culminated in Flash 123, Flash of Two Worlds and JLA 21, the first Crisis cross over) They released what may have been the first comic fanzine, Alter Ego, and had yearly competitions which reader could vote for best comic story best art, worst comic (won by Wonder Woman but Hulk did get a runner up spot). Well John Broome and Garner Fox one some awards (Flash 123 was voted best comic - not bad considering it ran against first spider-man and first Dr Doom, ) and they sent back letter of thanks. Of interest is John's last sentence, which came to pass long after John had left the hobby and something he was not actually aware of until the 1990 SDCC panel he did.

Thank you for posting these. I have seen a few issues, but not specifically these letters. Kudos for keeping the history alive.

Yes, as I recall, he's a surfing cover fan.

Correct. I first saw this cover in the Gerber photo guide and have been hunting for years. I have seen two, one heavily stained and one just a very low grade.

I'm pretty sure there were at least two others bidding it up, so I figured if I kept going, all I was going to do is punish someone, but eventually lose. So, whoever you are, you're welcome.

Yes, even the ones with awful dust shadows and terrible eye appeal—the high-grade ones, anyway.

Ugh. The book at 9.2 guides at $310. It was sitting at $525 going into the live session. I set a limit of $1000 for myself but got carried away and went up to $1200. Final hammer was $1800 (w/BP). I give it 24 hours before the regret sinks in. :frown:

neither really. wanted some cash, i had two copies so could spare it. didnt think the book would do much for awhile since the iron man films are done for now. the one lesson i repeatedly get hit over the head with is 'never sell keys unless it's to buy other keys.'

    That's a mantra I can follow.

  5. I have no submissions, so no stake here. But, I would not be surprised if there were a class action lawsuit. There was likely a lot of money lost, both in terms fo damaged books and lost opportunity to sell due to not making TAT commitments.
