Picked this up at an estate sale this morning- wasn’t cheap, but was able to bundle with lots of other stuff so that the total price for everything I purchased was very reasonable.  The estate had literally tens of thousands of books - but very little in the way of comics (although it was day 3 of the sale).

What’s interesting about this (to me) is that it appears to be a reviewer copy - but the bibliography is still cut out - although the classified ad inside said it was intact.

Thats pretty cool! Since its an advanced copy, I'm assuming that it's a first print?

Nice!  The 65c version pretty much has to be from EC, not DC; although I've never seen a definitive statement on which printings came from which publisher.  We love seeing pretty much any EC's here; so welcome to the thread!

I noticed your avatar; we would love to see the entire Cobweb House cover over in the Comics, Pulps, and Paperbacks thread; it's become the general paperback thread in the golden age forums.

Awesome! I've got tons of paperbacks to share then.

  3. All of the issues that I can see with this book are pictured. The smudge at the top of the logo looks like it'll come off with a cleaning. The top staple looks like it was misplaced during manufacturing, not sure if that affects the grade. Also a few spine creases and whitening along the very edge of the spine. Thanks for taking a look and for any help with this awesome book!

  4. I'm just looking to see if anyone has used these for the period of time suggested for poly bags. I was out of town and picked up a couple 100ct bags of these and so far I love them, they look and feel just like a thin mylar bag. But has anyone here used them for a long period of time? I  guess I'm just looking to see if they break down quicker or are junk. I've never heard of the material they're made out of (BOPP Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene). If they're good then I'm definitely switching to these.

How do the staples look? In some pictures, they seem discolored.  In other pictures they look fine.

Over all a pretty looking book. The spine roll can be pressed and it doesn't look like it caused color breaking creases.

I think 8.0 after press ( assuming staples look good)

Staples look perfect. I think they're discolored in that one picture because of the spinenroll and the way the light is reflecting off it.

I don't see anything wrong other than the spine roll and maybe a couple small indentations. Unless I'm missing something, a press should bring it to at least 9.0 maybe 9.2.

Thats the only things I see wrong in hand. I'm sure a press would take out the roll and the indentation on the top of the cover, not sure about the bottom part though.

Thanks everyone for your input so far!

  6. I just picked up this Avengers 196 at an antique store for 2 dollars (I haven't scored like that in awhile:banana:). Now I need some help with the grade. This thing is pretty crisp, the only major flaws I can see is the spine roll and the little indentations in the 3rd(on the edge below the spidey box) and 4th(towards the edge, just on the other side of taskmasters bow) pictures. No issues with the interior. Thanks for the help!

That is a pretty good rip! I'll stay with the consensus and say 4.0 to 4.5

I know! It hurts to look at. I'll just think of this as a good teachable moment for anyone who doesn't know that this is what happens when you rawdog a mylar and don't protect the front and back with a backing board while putting it in.

Thanks everyone for your input, much appreciated!

  8. I've got a tricky one here for you guys (tricky for me at least.) I picked up this nice looking mid grade copy right before prices on this and MS5 shot up so I got a very nice deal on it. Unfortunately, I must've forgot how to put comics in a mylar and caught the right side of the cover and sliced about a 1½ - 2 inch cut into it (I've done this a couple times before but this one hurt. Those mylars are just like razor blades). Thats the only major issue with this book. Everything else is visible. No missing pages/cutouts, pages are flat and tight to staples and are probably OW-W. Thanks for any help!

Lotsa little things. Too many to be fine but not enough to put squarely in VG. 4.5-5.0 seems right. A solid copy and the kind I go for when I hunt early Spideys :)

Same here. I love the look of mid grade silver and golden age books. Not that I don't love high grade books, I just like them looking like they've been read and loved. My wallet likes them better too.

So over the years I've gotten literally thousands of Marvel cards, sets, boxes, ect.  Its easy to find what a sealed box goes for off ebay, but sets , subsets and chase sets are hard to track.

Is there a website that I can use to learn more about what I have and what they sell for. I was surprised at what some of the boxes sell for, both good and bad.

I haven't heard of any sites that specifically keep track of cards/ sets/ boxes values, but I use trading card database to both catalog my cards and to also see what cards are in the sets. Each set will have a page for inserts, parallels, promos and stuff like that. You can get prices on there sometimes but anyone can enter a price for a card so you'll see some outrageous prices sometimes. I think they started vetting price submissions though so hopefully that issue will be resolved over time.

If there's a set im trying to put together I can find what inserts/subsets there are and then look at sold listings on eBay to see what they go for. It's another step in what you're looking for but it's been helpful for me over the years.
