  1. I definitely like the book, however. (thumbs u
  2. A check on E-Bay shows a couple of CGC issues in VF+ for 80 Page Giant #4. One seller mentioned there are only 7 issues graded higher! A check of GCG shows 8 issues between 9.0(4) and 9.4(3), with 1 at 9.2. Well he was close.
  3. Sweet copy of that #18. At one time I contemplated collecting Mad, and do have a few but mostly issues from the 70's. A few years back I decided not to pursue more Mad's, and traded my 30 or so issues from the 60's for Flash #108. I have to ask, as you survived an attack from a Great White shark. (I saw a surfer survive a simultaneous hit from two GW's on the History Channel not too long ago.) Did the Great White survive the encounter with you?
  4. 80 Page Giant # 4 Not one of my favorite Flash covers, but I cannot grumble as it was a birthday gift quite a few years ago. This is the story that stood out for me. There is also a G.A. Flash story. Might as well include the Weather Wizard.
  5. In effect. In Flash 216 it's explained that a certain Dragon's Eye causes Albert Desmond to embrace his criminal alter egos. In Flash 230 the fire demon Vadtara causes Albert to let his Dr. Alchemy persona take control. Neat thanks for the info. (thumbs u
  6. It's pretty neat to see Mad paid back with the "goofy" Superman, plus the poster on the back is
  7. Star Spangled War Stories #110 Whew for a second I thought the PT 109 was in the beasts claw.
  8. Great books. I will have to add the Enemy Ace to my want list.
  9. Thanks for reminding me. That is a great big WANT for me. I remember seeing them at the bookstore and noting that it cost something like $150, so I blew it off. What are they selling for these days? I'd love to track one down sometime. Don Martin is definitely "Mad's Maddest Artist," and without him I can't imagine the magazine inspiring nearly as much rabid fandom. I'll always remember the sound-effects article, especially the chesty woman unhooking her bra (seen from the back), which sounded something like "*click* ... Blop FLOOBADOOP" Your correct on the original cost, it was $150. I was in the right place at the right time. Two years ago around Christmas time I spotted two sets of these at a local big box retailer, on the bargin table. I checked and found the price was $25, and quickly snapped up the second to last copy. You should be able to find these on Ebay. The shipping will be high as these books weigh in at 5 pounds or a tad more apiece, and the book dimensions are 14 x 10 inches. For me Don Martin's stuff was the highlight of each Mad issue. Between the sound effects, Dons original style and great sense of humor, his was the best stuff Mad had to offer.
  10. Has anybody picked up the MASSIVE 2 volume set of "The Completely Mad Don Martin"? The books contain all of Martin's drawings that were published by Mad. Published in 2007, each book runs 500 pages The outside cover of Volume I.
  11. Nice one! (thumbs u Thanks Hepcat & Bill977. I was able to obtain this one from a LCS a few years ago. The shop had just received a large influx of comics, evidently from one collector. Many of the books have the name "Sue", or the letters "S", "gn" or T" on the cover. At any rate the books tend to be pretty nice except for the lettering. Does anyone enjoy the Charlton war books? I have a few of those plus more GIC, a handful of the other big 5 titles, and a few Sgt Fury's also. Charlton war can be a lot of fun to read as well. I've got stacks of them that I haven't looked at in years. Perhaps I'll pull them out soon? It appears there is no real consensus for Charlton books at this juncture. #120 A couple of thought on this issue. The pesky Tiger is too damm big, and the smiling german tank commander needs an attitude adjustment.
  12. Albert Desmond scored a couple of cover appearances early in the Bronze Age though: Despite the paucity of cover appearances, you have to admit that Albert Desmond was an extraordinarily talented individual. Very few people can manage even one super villainous identity but Albert successfully pulled off two! Nice books. (thumbs u In these Bronze Age Flash stories is Mr. Element pulled into crime against his will as he was in Flash 147? As a side note, I checked on Dr. Alchemy, who as it turns out gains his powers fron the Philosopher's Stone. I seem to recall a Uncle Scrooge story, where he, Donald and the 3 nephews are also in search of Philosopher's Stone.
  13. This thread needs a bump. The P-51, no finer combat figther plane in WWII, IMHO. I found this book in a box of misc books at a LCs not too long ago. Looking at the title, I had to chuckle/wonder if they were trying to borrow from DC's "Our Fighting Forces". A check just inside the cover shows the actual title is "Attack", however. #4 March 1972 - Inks by A. Martinez (Martinez did both the cover and story art)
  14. Sweet copies again. I was just reading up on Deadman, as my collection is currently devoid of them. I found out the early issues (from 67 and 68) won awards for Carmine Infantino and Neal Adams.
  15. Excellent copy of a "tough" issue to find in higher grade. (thumbs u
  16. Herc almost needed to see a chiropracter. #268 September 1960 - More Hercules. DC switched from pink to Lavender?? Trivia question. How many types of magic does Hercules use in his battle with Superman? Who comes to Superman's aid to awaken him from his 100 year slumber?
  17. Thanks guys, Before I continue on with my short stack of GIC's, I have this book. # 107 February 1965. Pencils by Irv Norvick. This ones marred by a bit more writing, and alas is my only AAMOW to date.
  18. It's a great read. I'd still like to pick up another couple pages of original art from this book. Are you referring to an online database? Outside of the issues mentioned, he (Desmond) also appeared (in the SA) in Flash 153 and 165 My comment was just that I didn't have this particular book listed in my Xcel DB. I keep my book in listed in an Xcel sheet, and create a new one each year. That gives me some sense of the growth of my collection. I also track my books using the Nostomania site. The site automatically calculates the books changing values every 3 months, if I recall correctly. It's free, although you can pay if you wish to, if you want more than the basic features.
  19. I took a look and found I do have a copy of #147 available, to take a closer look at Mr. Element. Issue #147 wasn't even listed in my database. At any rate, now that I have scanned the start of part II of the story, I might as well read this book again.
  20. Amazing books! (thumbs u I will have to keep an eye out for issue #19, that's one I would like to add at some point.

  22. I have been slowly working on collecting G. I. Combat, since Kubert is one of may favorite artists. (BTW that #49 is awesome) #111
  23. Action Comics #279 August 1961. Is Superman making a mental note to get a headband? Or, is he free from women trouble at least temporarily.
  24. Hepcat, I love your HOS collection. I'm a big fan DC SCI-FI and this is one of my favorite titles. I just won the HOS 35 in the latest C-link auction. I must admit I got it for a steal--less than guide. It's a nice 8.0 with a beautiful red cover and a Mark Merlin cover story! Pleae keep displaying yours. Thanks, SLR I recently took the plunge and picked up an issue of HOS #63, the first in my collection. I also must comment on HOS 41. That is one awesome cover.
  25. Cant say that I mind, that's quite a feat to have them all arranged in one group. (thumbs u This is the extent of my S. A. Lois Lane books. I do recall trading for #2 as a lad, but cannot recall the book I traded.
