DC# replied to Hey Kids, Comics!'s topic in Comics General
Sort of off-topic but sort of on the topic....I put together a list of all the "six figure" books that sold since this boom started in 2020. I will apologize in advance to the Gold collectors if I have left GA titles off the list. As someone said above - not sure the pecking order has changed much - just more commas and zeros. Are prices still climbing or have they eased up a bit???
DC# replied to InfantTerrible's topic in Comics General
ComicLink finally did me in.....this April Focused Auction is just too much. I was trying to recap these last two sessions but I have lost my mojo. I got to the "H"s and threw in the towel. Plus the Heritage books/art results this week really makes you not care that much about how a bunch of 9.0 copies of ASM #361 are doing at the moment. -
Well....your copy is likely worth at least $12K more than a couple of weeks ago. A white-pager in 6.5 just went for $84k.
-
For those that want to debate - here are the last seven CGC 3.0's that sold on Heritage. Ignoring one Sept 2021 sale that was Blue Label but had a Stan Lee signature on the cover. Without a doubt - the 10/10/21 copy is the best looking of the bunch with a nice date stamp too. Also note that the 8th sale was 11/8/20 that went for $18k. So it essentially doubled from Nov 20 to Oct 21. Just noticed there is another 3.0 going up this week.
-
Instagrailz (Instagram consignment service) seems to have completely disappeared this week. No IG page, no website.....anyone have any insights? I don't recall any farewell post and complete disappearance of past content and website makes you think something more nefarious. They seemed to successfully push a lot of books - they sold a $48k copy of ASM #129 9.8 last week alone.

May have a lot to do with their timing of acquisition/cost of goods on the book as well.....which I can fully appreciate. -

Will also be testing this out at WonderCon next weekend. Last Con I went to in Dec was talking to a dealer about an Avengers 4 in 6.5 which he offered to discount to $4800. I won one on Heritage a few weeks later for $3500 which was more inline with market rates. -

You thrown out the truly silly, one-off highs and lows over the past 14 months and ASM 238 in 9.8 has been a pretty stable investment as indicated by 2021 avg, 12 month avg, 90 day and last sale. ASM #129 has been a bit more volatile across most grades including the super high grades. Two 9.8 sales on GPA in 2022 - one for $38.4k in Jan and one for $57k in March (Intstagralz seems to have sold one for $47k last week). 9.4 has six sales ranging from $6.9k to $9.2k. Year Number High Low 2022 6 $3200 $2859 2021 37 $4100 $1800 Dec-24 $3000 3825361001 Dec-19 $3200 2105812004 Dec-12 $2525 1208747001 Dec-04 $3300 2104016002 Nov-21 $2520 1975515001 Nov-15 $3399 0191403004 Nov-11 $3201 3748925002 Nov-06 $2142 2105812004 Oct-28 $3250 3909133009 Sep-30 $3150 3909133008 Sep-26 $2880 1974760001 Sep-19 $2880 1975029002 Sep-11 $3240 3707425010 Aug-26 $2880 3826009009 Aug-10 $3000 1205510001 Aug-08 $3360 1208747001 Jul-26 $3000 3842556004 Jul-07 $3500 2129298024 Jun-21 $3051 2104381007 Jun-03 $4100 3759353013 May-28 $3350 2129298025 May-25 $3300 1465111013 May-25 $3150 1024366002 May-23 $2640 1973529002 May-08 $3050 0032520012 May-06 $3850 1255305015 May-04 $3001 2025247012 Apr-30 $3550 0164697004 Apr-25 $3700 Apr-23 $3650 1556671004 Apr-16 $2844 1133164008 Mar-18 $3700 1134493002 Mar-14 $2656 2082409003 Feb-24 $3200 2027273001 Feb-21 $3850 3721716008 Jan-16 $1800 3747274002 Jan-12 $2000 3755234005 -
In a classic bulls vs bears debate - I am going to take the short. Despite discussions around presentation of some recent under-performers, there have been enough recent sales across enough grades and enough different platforms for me to conclude we have hit a top. At least for this bull run. I am not predicting massive declines or winter is coming - but I think the rapid price increases are done for now. - the comic connect results for the 8.0, 5.5 and the 3.0 were all 10-18% lower. - heritage results have been flat for the past month. A 3.0 closed this Sunday at 44k which is was 10% under GPA - the Goldin results from early March were all flat/lower for a 5.5, 4.5, and a 2.5. Most down in the 8-10% range from recent GPA - The March CL results were mixed (a 6.5 was up vs a 2 year old comp, a 4.0 was down, and a 1.5 was up slightly) The biggest recent positive was the huge 1.8 EBay sale which now seems a bit sketchy. This is the same pattern we saw over the past 18 months with other books like X-men 1. Not saying a gorgeous, high grade copy won’t buck the trend - but not the “work a day” copies that show up on heritage and CL every week/month. Will be watching the 4.0 with interest on Heritage this week. The last two 4.0 sales were 75k in Oct and 72k in Jan.

Are prices still climbing or have they eased up a bit???
DC# replied to InfantTerrible's topic in Comics General
Here are some "big book" results from the ComicConnect auction this week. I did not include the Marvel Comics #1 "Pay Copy" results but close to $2.8M after 15% buyer premium. And a 2.5 copy of Marvel did better than a 4.5 sale in January. A few other observations: - I do believe we are seeing a top on Amazing Fantasy #15 - at least for now. This auction was down. The Goldin from a few weeks ago was down. Weekly Heritage results have been mostly flat (Sunday 3/20 PM update - a 3.0 sold on Heritage for $44.4K vs last sale in Feb of $48k). The March CL results were mixed (a 6.5 was up vs a 2 year old comp, a 4.0 was down, and a 1.5 was up) On the Silver Board there has been discussions about the quality of the copies that have been a bit softer. But 2-3 months ago every ragged copy that came to market seemed to push prices higher. Someone may point to that recent eBay sale of a $39k for a 1.5 as a counter point. But that feels like the definition of an outlier as it was $17k higher than a Feb sale and $7k higher than a March 2.0 sale. - The Amazing Spider-Man #1 6.0 was an unbelievable looking copy. It trended higher than the 6.5 copy over the entire auction. - Incredible Hulk #1 numbers were really impressive and seem to build on the Nov and Dec sales numbers for 8.0/7.0 copies - X-Men #1 still seems to be bouncing around a fairly tight range since the 2nd half of 2021 with most grades peaking in Spring/early Summer 2021. - JIM #83 and TOS #39 showing some nice strength on CC. A TOS #39 5.0 did much better here than the 5.0 copy on the March ComicLink (20k vs 16.8k) -

Final March Clink results. Note that any change between +2% and -2% is in black (essentially flat), >2% is green, and <-2% is red. Note that I mislabeled the March results column as Jan (3rd column) - that is the March results. The far right column is the comparable Jan results if available. -

DC# replied to InfantTerrible's topic in Comics General
As others have stated above, I think there are often "deals" to be found on Clink. But you can find exceptions in every auction on every platform. For example, I won a Fantastic Four #211/9.8/WP/Direct Edition from Heritage for $930 two weeks ago. A similar WP/DIrect/9.8 sold for $1,303 yesterday on Clink. And there are outliers on all the platforms too. In session 1 of March Clink auction a X-Men #133/9.8/OW-W/Newstand sold for an eye-popping $2,833. That is way above FY22 high of $1680 and FY21/All-time high of $1800. And Heritage had a big outlier I noticed last night - a What If #1/9.8/WP sold for $3,120 which is way above all-time high of $1300 last year and the Jan/Feb 2022 sales that were in the $700-$800 range. And I am sure there were many more than just those two - those just happened to catch my eye. -

I tend to go in on opening day and put low opening bids on anything of even remote interest. You can then track them in the My Auction Bids section. -

Because absolutely no-one demanded it.......here is the Session 1 results for March C-Link. Not a Batman collector but I was struck by how many really great Batman and Detective books there were. And what felt like a lot of 9.9's and even one 10. Big increases vs prior since many books have not seen sales for nearly a decade. -
And to give DC some love - I believe new records for Batman #1 in 5.0 at $510k and Superman #1 in 3.0 for $720k.
-
Fair - and I believe Goldin is much better known in the card community. Though they did have some solid results. They have a much more curated auction as well - I didn't count but probably less than 50 books overall and no scrubs. A couple of notables A Fantastic Four #5 in 6.5 went for $31.2k which is a new record high vs GPA results and up from $24.9k last GPA sale. A TOS #39 in 4.0 got close to its 2021 peak with a $16.2k sale vs last GPA in January of $14.5K. JIM #83 in 8.5 sold for $85.2k (last sale was in April for $75k). TOS #39 in 8.5 sold for $102k vs $99k GPA in Nov. ASM #129 9.8 and 9.6, GSX #1 9.6, XM #1 3.0, FF #49 8.5, DD #1 7.5 all went right around most recent GPA results (some a bit higher some a bit lower) So wasn't a weak auction. And the AF15 results weren't weak either........just didn't feel as "frothy" as the past several months where every auction/sale regardless of platform saw a material increase over the prior sales.

Possible - though that 4.5 was a white pager with some pretty bold colors. And for sure just a personal preference - but if someone gave me a choice of the Goldin 2.5 plus $17k or the Ebay 2.5 straight up (the one that sold for $55k) - I would go Goldin and the cash I guess with those lower grades - gotta pick which faults are most acceptable - detached covers, missing pieces, trashed spine, stains, etc. They are all going to have something ugly about them. I am a sucker for rich, bold colors....it can pull my eyes away from the other deficits.
