  1. Only 10 made, only 6 known to exist. Red is even more rare. 10 made only 2 known to exist. Getting my hands on one of those is going to be my greatest challenge for my collection me thinks.

10 made on purpose, or 10 assumed? Was it a promotion, or something along those lines? Just wanting to learn.

  2. Today I went to an antique shop that I've never been to before, got a few good books for $2.50 each- Batman Mad Love 1st print, Superman 500 platinum sealed, R Crumb's ZAP #4 original, a few 1971 Creepy mags and then this happened... Almost full, has 29 sealed packs....

p><p> DonI gave my little brother a few 1986 garbage pail kids but the deal was he had to eat all the gum. It was awesome.

Not long ago I bought a pack of '78 topps baseball for a shot at the Molitor, Murphy, or Murray cards, and ate the gum. It was white. Didn't taste like much. Crumbled like sawdust. Got commons in the pack.

  3. If the CGC book is priced right, I'll buy it slabbed just to crack it out and put it in my cabinet. I have some CGC stuff, but generally, unless its a 'prized possession' I crack out other CGC books just for the sake of storage.

Do you inform CGC of the cracked book? I wonder if the current stats on the CGC database are updated.

    I do.

But I charge $5 for the service.

Maybe the census would be more accurate if CGC offered a few bucks off re-grading each book? hm

  4. Most 2nd prints I've seen have some degree of miswrap, seems to have been a reoccurring problem on this issue.

The first printings are known to have a similar mis-wrap.

    -J.

Most copies I see have some kind of mis-wrap and small edge cuts on the bottom edge of the back. Good centered copies should have a premium. If they already do not?

  5. I'm not sure if #361 2nd printing is rare but I do know that the market is showing an interest in this comic. Heck, I never thought an Amazing Spider-Man #361 CGC 9.8 1st printing would clear $200 but yet here we are. And Amazing Spider-Man #361 2nd printing seems to be right behind it. Feel free to argue about rarity but it's hard to debate the facts. (shrug)

This is one of the rare instances that the first prints seem more desirable than the second. I've noticed this on raws, as well as graded:

  6. I watched a raw sell at C2E2 for $90... I was in shock.

    Jim

    :o Wow that's crazy!

I went from booth to booth looking to pick up copies and a few of the dealers threw out $90 at me. I haggled and got about 4-5 copies in VF-VF+ for about $35/40 ea. Watch out for the copies with the "printer defect" small tears at the bottom. And yes, the book continues to rise even as the weeks go by.

What kind of grade drop will these tears cause? If a book looks like it would otherwise grade 9.8 but has these tears, what will it grade?

They don't drop the grade. Look up graded 9.8s on eBay, you can find several copies with several tears along the bottom edge.

I can confirm this. My friend got 3x 9.8s back that all had this.

Me too. Have had several 9.8's, and they all had at least a small cut in the red part of the bottom edge. Now a 9.9? hm

  7. Check this out.

    It's pretty amazing.

An alpha Lotus. That's pretty much your Action 1 of Magic. Maybe a Beta.

The first few sets, up until Legends, are BIG money. Don't sell until you really get some good advice from people you trust. Otherwise you'll probably get fleeced. I had an Alpha set I sold in 1999, for several thousand. That was 15 years ago. I'm not sure what prices are now, but last time I looked a few years ago, they were off the charts.

  8. Yes, I've been lucky enough to own it for almost 15 years now and counting. It truly is a grail piece. I'm glad I was able to share it with fans at the exhibit.

The only Zeck piece I'd ever consider superior would be Cap Annual #8.

    Otherwise, this is the king.

    Right on.

  9. OT: who is Stacker? I started this thread almost 9 years ago, and it says he started this thread, even though he wasn't a member until 2008? Odd. Please continue...

    Weird....

Thanks for getting us started! Did you ever get your #21 in 9.8???

You know, of all people, I never did. lol Looking at the census, I don't think it would be difficult at this point.

  10. Many copies of the book have a "ragged" right edge from poor cutting. CGC doesn't discount for this, (generally), so that's not really the issue.

The main problem is the combination of the paper and ink used. It happens to be a combination that attracts and magnifies oils, so finger oils are nearly impossible to remove when they're on, even if wiped. As well...the black back cover ad shows everything. This is not a case of "black covers being rare in high grade", because that is a myth. The reality is black (and dark) solid colors SHOW wear far more readily than busy artwork, or solid white/lighter areas.

The back cover, much like #301, is simply unforgiving.

Same with #298 as well, by the way.

I remember that big argument about black covers being rare in high grade. That implies that people just went aggressive on black covers whenever they saw one. Babied other lighter covered books.

As said, a cover like 300 just shows flaws that seem to light up like a Christmas tree. I think CGC goes easy on this book despite this.

  11. New to this forum and started buying graded stuff just out of sheer frustration from garbage sellers on ebay.

Anyway, I was getting back into comics and trying to put together a mcfarlane run, but with my luck, this stupid venom movie gets announced. Any chance these early venom issues will come back down to "normal" prices or am I just screwed now?

Not anytime soon. And if the movie is good, forget it. If you really want a nice copy, buy now, or in 5 years.

  12. Hey Everyone,

Been out of the comic collecting game for a little but, now I'm back full force... Wanted to put a value on a few of my keys:

    X-Factor #6 & 24 CGC 9.9

    Uncanny X-Men #244 CGC 9.9

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Pictures... or it never happened.

    Oh, wttb.
