  1. So, is Kid Marvelman/Miracleman's first appearance heating up on ebay?

I think there are like 2 known copies of his first appearance. First Alan Moore Marvelman would be a better place to start.

I was actually kidding, though one copy actually did show up on ebay years ago. Sorry about that!

(And yes, I highly recommend first Alan Moore Marvelman to everyone--Warrior #1! Also first V for Vendetta!)

  2. Eh, give me the original MM #15...

This is actualy a big deal. Rare book that was never reprinted till now, plus you get new extras including a house ad concept art, the development of the original cover from sketch to inks to colors, scans of the original artboards of ten pages, character study and scene sketches by Totleben, layouts and sketches, and an unused layout page for page 19

Im alll in on that one

Some of Totleben's studies for pivotal scenes--e.g., the battle's end--are just stunning.

  3. Annual is out but I haven't gotten it yet. Any reviews? Also, looks like we're a few weeks ago from reprinting MM 15!!

I was dreadfully disappointed by the Grant Morrison story. The Milligan story was fun, I thought, and well done (he's STILL underrated). But the Morrison story had such a history to it, you expected it to be a little (lot) more substantive.

  4. Also when that comic came out in 92-93 i didn't think women had cooties. i did know they had back then that they were all pain in the asses... and thats is true of course

Let's not reinforce stereotypes about how comics fans stereotype women, please. I know you're kidding. I know you mean no harm. Just please go the next step and imagine a woman reading this who's been hit by someone who called her a pain in the . They're out there and more of them are in our community than ever.

These jokes might be a lot funnier if we didn't live in a world where men use exactly that kind of thinking, for real, to justify violence against women. And there is a lot of violence against women.

Please no lectures on having a sense of humor, folks. I do. I've literally worked for Comedy Central. I just don't find these jokes funny and the upside of resisting them is we don't perpetuate this thinking OR the stereotypes about comic fans and women. All I'm asking is that we not say here what we wouldn't say to a woman's face.

    Thanks.

  5. Hi Guys, Derek here :)

Just had to step in here to clear the air slightly.

As you say Ewan I was the underbidder, I think I gave you that info.

Unfortunately I did not secure the comic as several people have suspected; I will complete the tale..............

The seller contacted me to say that the sale had been cancelled and whether I was interested in a second chance offer. I agreed to pay the equivalent of my final bid, assuming the last bid was cancelled and he initially agreed.

I asked for more pictures of the comic via my email address and he made excuses as to why he couldn't send more photos, claiming that he didn't want to damage the comic by handling.

Here is where it gets strange; the seller now started making excuses as to why he now wanted to back off the sale completely and re-list the comic later, even though I pointed out that only 2 buyers were prepared to bid so generously, but he still backed off and refused to sell.

He now doesn't answer my emails and MM 26 hasn't been re-listed, even though he is still selling comics at 99p.

I don't know where he got the photo of 26 from but I now firmly believe that it was a scam and he didn't have the comic to sell.

I only hope I am wrong as it is the only copy I have ever seen and you are correct Jonathan, I have 721 / 722 MM; YM; MMF comics and all 20 Annuals, so this issue was rather important for me.

Maybe another will turn up eventually but I won't hold my breath.

Hi Derek, thanks for sharing this. WOW. I think it was not a scam (where's the part where they make money? Why cancel the sale on me?) -- my guess is that they've decided to try for more money. The guy was willing to sell it to me for, I think, $50 before he knew about the intense interest. He told me there was other family involved in the sale--I assume this was a dead relative's comic. And the rest of the family wanted to get more than that $50, which is why he canceled. So my guess is that, with Bleeding Cool and others writing about what a big deal this was, the family pressured this guy to pull it...and maybe seek an auction house to get the riches the dream of.

Not realizing that they've just pissed off the two people (who WERE) willing to spend that kind of money. I certainly wouldn't again.

Oh, and I'd love to know WHEN they approached you--I'd be interested to see how that syncs up with the timeline of when they jerked me around on the (ALREADY-AGREED-TO) shipping to the US and, ultimately, their cancellation.

For what it's worth, if I wasn't gonna get it, you (or Ewan!) woulda been my first choices. Sorry it didn't happen for you.

  6. Right. So the day after she appeared in Avenging Spider-Man but had not yet appeared in Captain Marvel 1, the reality was--she hadn't appeared at all!

This is the definition of a straw man. You are arguing against things that no one said, and setting up fake examples to knock down.

"CM1 is the book where Carol becomes Captain Marvel, its not an origin story."

I don't care whether it's her origin or not and haven't argued regarding that at all (see: ACTUAL definition of straw man). I have argued that a week that comes before another week comes first. If you're saying Avenging Spider-Man 9 was not her first appearance, she must not have appeared in it.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a hot lead on Batman 404, his first appearance.

  7. Captain marvel 17 plus ms marvel 1 is hot

    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=captain+marvel+17&_from=R40%7CR40&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&_osacat=900&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR2.TRC1.A0.H0.Xcaptain+marvel+17+ms&_nkw=captain+marvel+17+ms&_sacat=900

I've even seen the 2nd print of 17 doing okay because the new Ms. Marvel is on the cover. I'm a 1st print guy only because you can reprint indefinitely but it is a neat feature imo.

Keep in mind, if the second printing comes out a week later, it's actually a first printing. Because science.

  8. fixed.

As much as you'd like that to be true, unfortunately its not. It's one story, released out of order to boost sales.

Right. So the day after she appeared in Avenging Spider-Man but had not yet appeared in Captain Marvel 1, the reality was--she hadn't appeared at all! Or, it was her second appearance, and people were just going to have to wait a week for her first appearance, which would appear second, following her second appearance, which appeared first.

I can see why you do this now. It's fun!

  9. Someone please stand up and say Carol doesnt become Captain Marvel in Captain Marvel #1, then go on to prove it.

Once that is done, I will say, whoops, I guess my comment saying people are pushing trash on here and missing the forest for the trees was wrong.

I think people are arguing with you because they really don't care if she first becomes Captain Marvel in CM 1, chronologically speaking, when the Avenging Spider-Man issue was released first and features her as Captain Marvel. That would make it her first appearance as Captain Marvel, since the book released first, even though its telling a story that occurs after the events of CM 1. This is what I have gathered browsing the thread, having never read or owned an issue of Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel, or Avenging Spider-Man.

Is Detective Comics 27 the first appearance of Batman or Detective Comics 404 which features Bruce Wayne as Batman chronologically before the first appearance in Detective Comics 27?

I think you mean Batman 404. But yes, historically, Batman 404 is considered the first appearance of Batman as that is when Bruce Wayne BECOMES Batman. If you are a collector of release dates, I guess you can chase Detective...what number was it again? 27?

But if you want the first moment in history when people first saw the character of Batman, you want Batman 404.

  10. I agree with his points, I dont agree that Captain Marvel is an origin story, because its not.

AS9 continues directly out of it, they are the same story, produced at the same time, released together, 7 days apart, AS9 sold in stores first only because of an existing release date/week.

    "together" = "apart"

    (shrug)

You. With the logic. Get out.

  11. I started the discussion with a loaded comment no doubt. If an existing character changes her name, the book where she changes her name, is the relevant book. My point about forest and trees remains, and was always about people chasing a date or previews as opposed to the actual event in question.

The people in the thread, with relation to me or "Arguing" with me, fall into three categories.

1.) Those having an honest discussion about the merits of both books. I respect that, and have no problem with it.

2.) People who have AS9 to sell and dont like me not drinking the kool-aid, or taking kool-aid out of would be victims hands.

3.) My haters, mostly people who have lost arguments in the past and "cant handle the truth"/"are mad bro".

CM1 is the book where Carol becomes Captain Marvel, no amount of debating can change that.

Right. And Superman 1 is the book where Kal El becomes Superman, which is why no one wants Action 1 or considers Action 1 the first appearance of Superman. It just happened because of release-date scheduling to come out first, making it an interesting little footnote in comics history, but nothing more. Real collectors know that Superman 1 is the one to have.

  12. What's the first comic you could buy on the newstand/comic shop that featured Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel? I'll take my answer off the air.

The one where she becomes Captain Marvel.

But she's already Captain Marvel in Avenging #9, says so right on the first page.

She's not Captain Marvel in Captain Marvel #1.....then she decides to take the name, and she is. Hence, the first time she becomes Captain Marvel, is the panel where she becomes Captain Marvel.

So, since Detective 27 isn't the first appearance of Batman any more, anyone know what was?

An ad, which is not particularly important.

there is a preview in the back of DC Comics Presents 26 that people seem to be paying quite a bit for.

and that Malibu Sun issue with the guy in a big red cape with chains seems to command some money as well.

DC Comics Presents 26 contains a story that is not available in New Teen Titans 1.

    still a preview

If you say it enough times, that ought to make it true. Except for people who understand what the prefix "pre" and the word "view" mean, of course.

No, there isn't. It's a full, original story, not a preview of NTT 1.

Did I say it was a preview of NTT 1? No, I didn't. It is a preview though, says so right there on the cover. Thanks for playing.

Sorry. Didn't realize you deferred your own powers of judgment to someone slapping promo copy onto a comic-book cover. Probably for the best.

  15. Hi all

Discussed fanzines and much more are now on ebay ;)

Assume I get special dispensation for saying this since I discovered most of them, if not apologies

Contemplating selling my 300+ L Miller Marvelman's too as my "man-cave" is being turned into my younger son's bedroom so I have to down-size...

We should talk! (And congrats to your son on his new room!)

  16. Not sure whether these constitute heating up or status quo, but was curious about Adam Hughes covers and found these sales...

It's just interesting to see which of his covers are starting to pop...both first- and second-tier. I think a growing number of these are going to become iconic images over time.
