  1. If the PayPal account had been tied to a credit card rather than the OP's bank account, would he have another avenue of defense (opening a dispute with the cc company), or would it have mattered?
  2. Robert "Bob" Lubbers (note the 's') was a terrific and, now, deceased comic strip/comic book artist.
  3. This is stunning. I love Ngu's work, but before Christmas? I'm so broke right now!
  4. I've enjoyed this newsletter for weeks. It's always interesting and fun. Kudos, Glen, for sharing the info with others.
  5. A great write-up, and some really special artwork. Thanks for sharing.
  6. I've been a Groo fan from the very beginning, just never found any OA available as nice as this pick-up. A great cover and an interesting write-up. Thanks for sharing.
  7. I've heard that an upcoming film or television project can bump up the value of old comics, at least on a temporary basis, but is this true of OA? The CW shows didn't seem to do much for the art featuring their respective heroes...or did it? I don't remember a bump, but I follow those markets very loosely.
  8. I haven't read Syaf's comments, but I wouldn't destroy the artwork, either. But Bird had a great idea. If it bothers you to own the piece, why not donate it to a charity that promotes a positive message? Perhaps a Christian organization, if you want a little irony with your donation. That way, your purchase becomes goes towards good works and you're not "stuck with it".
  9. It usually means the dealer has accepted someone's offer on the piece, but the transaction hasn't yet been completed. I've inquired on a couple of pieces that were on hold "forever", only to have each dealer tell me that the art had been sold. I don't see any harm in asking, though. You might be luckier than me.
  10. Mike, thanks for sharing. I found the details, and the images, really interesting.
  11. Love and Rockets. Jaime's artwork dazzles. Strangers in Paradise, too. Peter David's X-Factor runs. Love those stories, especially with early Quesada art. Joe Q. wasn't there for long, though. And, yeah, 100 Bullets before it lost it's way (1-50 was the best).
  12. Mike, thanks for sharing. I appreciate that you shared your experience and owned up to your behavior. That couldn't have been easy.
  13. Interesting topic; thanks for bringing it up. With hardcover fiction, first editions matter. With trades, I don't think so. Not yet, anyway. If an aftermarket ever develops for "first editions", that will change. But rarity still drives most collectors. In that regard, if you find Shooter's "Inherit the Earth" Fatale hardcover for $100, let me know, would you? In 1996, it came out in a 250-copy signed/limited edition at (I think) $50 a pop and was soon followed by a TPB at $14.95. These days, the TPB goes for $40-50 on Amazon (Mile High wants $216 on sale) and the hardcover edition runs $400+ if you can locate one. The only seller I can find on eBay is asking for an optimistic $2499.
  14. There's nothing wrong with a niche hobby. Most days, I welcome the world's ignorance in regards to original comic art. More people = more noise, and I focus on my hobby to escape the noise. Thank goodness for our quiet corner of the collecting universe.
  15. I've always been a Jaffee fan, and this is pretty cute, although deliberately drawn to not look like Jaffee's style. I don't know the MAD market, but this appears optimistically priced. It's not "classic" (i.ie., the stuff I remember!) Jaffee material. Or am I wrong? Any Al Jaffee collectors out there?
  16. No one is saying the artist can't use all of their available tools. (I'm not convinced that the use of technology necessarily creates the best art, either.) What we're saying is, if you want to sell the art to me, this is what I will or won't buy. Scott can do whatever he'd like. He may or may not find fewer interested buyers if he changes his approach.
  17. As a Dave Stevens fan, I enjoy following your collection. Thanks for sharing!
  18. I did, too. And EVERY WORD WAS IN CAPS, which I've always found a little distracting.
  19. A great score. Calnan's inks really make this pop. Congratulations!
