Absolutely understand, and I'm sure it's even more involved than I imagine it to be. But this isn't something that's going away, this is the way CGC's going to label from here on out (especially as people reholder). It might be niche collecting, but it's niche collecting that brings in higher-dollar books (in enough cases). If MCS adds these to their database once, they're done, because no new newsstands are ever coming out.

I just got some newsstands with the new CGC label back last week, and while I want to send them to MCS, I'll be putting them on eBay because I can put "newsstand" in the title and get double the price much more quickly. Currently on MCS, people have to choose each individual listing in order to see scans to determine newsstands, which can delay sales and cause sellers to drop the price.

I know MCS won't be affected by missing out on a 10% cut of my $500 books, but I can see the changes paying for themselves before long. And anything they can do to help me avoid eBay would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah I can see how CGC recognizing newsstand could motivate MCS to get with the program (so to speak). Obviously I'm in no position to speak for them, but by experience I know that this sort of thing could take a while to rollout.

@mycomicshopThat's too bad. I know I have some stuff consigned with you right now that would have probably sold already if it had "newsstand" in the title. Others I've had to drop multiple times before someone noticed what it was.

Love it or hate it, I honestly think you (and your customers) will make more money if you start labeling them as such.

I see the benefit of a newsstand indicator for both MCS and buyers, but adding that property to comic books where applicable is no small feat. It requires a proper cost/benefit analysis. To put it into perspective, seeing that the online store is database driven, one or more table fields have to be introduced and queried for. Then the UI has to be updated to display the indicator where appropriate (eg. title in search results, on product page, etc.). Plus visitors might want to filter their search by 'newsstand' which means modifying the search functionality - a critical component business might be very hesitant to touch at all. Finally, assuming business doesn't test new development in production, then you add all the QA work that goes with it. MCS has to be sure all the time and money poured into the project is quantifiably worth it.

I'm not saying she was involved. I've purchased an Action Comics 26 from Danielle and she's a wonderful seller.

Black Flag Comics are to blame for allowing the situation to happen and CGC for slabbing a bootleg.

She was in Sarasota last month attending the CGC Grading Academy - any one with even the slightest business sense would take that opportunity to meet with the c-suites. Just saying.

Dealers buy a lot from each other and have big budgets.

I see. I'm coming from an online business perspective so I admit to a limited understanding of the sort of traditional in-person / convention dealer experience.

This seems advantageous for buyers, maybe less for the seller. I would think the seller runs the numbers (cost of goods, CGC fees, time invested in restocking, etc.) before they enter into negotiation to realize an acceptable net? Otherwise, it could be a bad proposition for them.

This makes a lot of sense.  Fewer reported sales will skew GPA data.  Or does it?  You and others in the categories you list as having been affected by the covid holiday never reported data to GPA.  All these sales have always been invisible.  But GPA kept tracking what it gets… and was as accurate as it could be from its sources.  GPA is still posting sales from the same places, so in their subset of sales data, conclusions can still be drawn from it.  Also, GPA numbers always require a greater understanding to interpret.  It’s always best for Spidey 361, she hulk 1 etc etc … any comic that changes hands rapidly and often.  And has never been as helpful with sales of older more expensive and rarely sold books.  Well, that hasn’t changed either.  And, this thread has a board member didligently comparing ONLY Comiclink data — apples to apples —  certainly Comiclink sales have been an accurate barometer of what’s going up and down, hot and cold.

so, I think your explanations has merit, but not as a blanket statement about comics pricing as a whole across the board. It’s always been fragmented …a draw your own conclusions thing.  what we need of course is MORE data,   Ahem.

+1 for more data. But reliable and digestible data. While of course not perfect, best option to date is GPA.

I am curious what reasons do dealers give for choosing not to report to GPA. I'm sure some are valid. I do know first hand that there can be a technical barrier to reporting to GPA. The data has to be rolled into a file in a specific format and structure as prescribed by them. Ideally the file is produced programmatically. It can certainly be done manually but that's typically prone to human error. I would think that some of the dealers and auction houses submit their data as text or in a spreadsheet and let the folks at GPA then process it.

When I had just launched my online store a little over a year ago, I felt it was important for me to disclose all CGC sales, unfiltered. I got in touch with George at GPA shortly after and with his and the support team's help (so grateful for that!), I became a reporting partner. Producing the data feed manually was absolutely not an option. I've got too much on my plate. So I built a service that grabs recently sold and live items and delivers it to the GPA system on a daily basis. (I benefit from 20+ years of software engineer experience and so I was able to write and now manage the service myself.)

Other dealers can and are welcome to the service too if they're looking for a streamlined way of onboarding with GPA.

    So yes, MORE data!

I think it would have been an total shock and absolute surprise if prices did NOT drop from the crazy town levels that we saw last year with some of these books here.  (thumbsu

Not so much in the case of some of the HTF GA books that hardly ever shows up to market, but definitely so with the much more common recent books where you see multiple copies showing up in every single auction.  Especially when these "common as dirt" so-called key books were being snapped out not to be put into the purchaser's collection, but brought solely on the basis that prices would keep going up on the book in question.  Nothing to deflate a market faster then the "greater fool" theory when it is exposed for what it is, with the CGC storage warehouse in overflow mode and bursting at the seams as these overhyped books keep flowing in.  doh!  :tonofbricks:

Yes! And glad you qualified GA books with "HTF" as even in that category, there are a lot of common or I should say, less desirable books, even with the flagship Timely titles that tend to sit on the shelf longer.

In dealing with various auction places, I see that a real effective solution to ComicLink's issue with the exchange is to insure and store all consignment books on site like the other guys. But, that comes with it's own set of problems and procedures and it might be like you said: too costly to change a broken process.

Having books in hand is the best approach if your business goal is to strengthen buyer's trust.

I’m a vintage toy and premium collector as well as mostly GA comics. Not many of us cross collecting collectors. Most comic folks are pretty focused on just comics. I would never use table space for toys at a show like that.

We have a killer vintage toy and advertising show coming up in August in LA. A great two day show. Vintage comics almost always turn up there but it isn’t a comic show and there are no guarantee.

Would that be the All-American Collectors Show in Glendale?

The show was created to capitalize on many big dollar buyers in SO CA that have given up on SDCC. Many older deep pocket folks that just want to buy nice GA/SA books without the crowds, distractions and extra costs associated with SDCC.

Dealers are coming to SD anyway. They usually arrive there several days before the show. So the cost of a reasonably priced hotel room in LA for maybe a couple of nights isn’t that big a deal. Especially with the money that comes into the room.

I have heard nothing of the “shark tank” you refer to last year. The dealers always swarm each other at any show.

I looked at the on line vendor list. It did look dim. A lot of pre show buyers were on the fence. Early ticket sales were probably very poor.

I found out later that pretty much everyone from the past were planning to attend. The dealers didn’t back out, they were shut out.

I believe it was handled poorly this year. An accurate vendor and guest list would have generated a lot more pre show ticket sales. Last years it was a 3 day show. WAY to long  I did the room comfortably in one day.

I am super bummed. I am one of those serious GA buyers. I gave up SDCC about 5 years ago. Torpedo was an incredible opportunity for collectors like me. I had been putting money aside for sometime just for this show. It was also a wonderful opportunity to have free access to the fresh stock that was headed to SDCC before it made it there. Hopefuly, it comes back next year.

Great insight. Thanks. And now I know whose information to take with a grain of salt (referring to the source of the the dealer buyout comment).

I hope it comes back next year too - I'll be there. Nice to be at a show devoid of all the extra fluff.

On a separate note, I'd love to see more dealers at the show offering vintage toys. I think there was one last year. Maybe I should exhibit next year hm

double booked?? this sounds like a fully fictitious reason. very disappointing. people book hotels that are non-refundable, etc. we would have been coming into town anyway, but this was perfect timing for us.

Just found this thread, but I've known about the cancelation for a while now.

I agree. The explanation seems to be just for PR purposes, but can't say for sure.

I attended last year. Brought the whole family, was a lot fun! What I wonder though is why would dealers choose to exhibit at and in many cases, travel long distance for a show like Torpedo where competition for attendees' business is rather stiff? Also, these same dealers are likely also exhibiting at SDCC which means they have to stay in So Cal a lot longer, incurring more cost. So to me, Torpedo Con is great for buyers and not so much for dealers. Could that be the reason dealers backed out?

Maybe it's because I am strictly an online store and doing the convention circuit is not part of my business model, but it just doesn't make much sense to me. Or maybe I'm just totally niave and need to get with the program called 'misery loves company.' (shrug)

And on a total tangent, and granted this is just hearsay, but I was told the show became sort of a shark tank, where a major dealer swept up the entire inventory of one or more smaller dealers. Is that a desirable scenario for some dealers? Not a rhetorical question.

Before you make new rules, think about how to enforce them.

If a board member sends me books to sell on consignment, that is a deal between them and me. They may not want folks to know they are selling, and I may want people to think I own all these pretty books, not merely sell them for others. How can you possibly force people to tell if they are offering consigned books? What should my penalty be when it is finally revealed I sold a consigned book to a person who was thrilled with the transaction? I've consigned books to people who have sold them on these boards.  People aren't required to say if a book is pressed but you want to force them to say if it is consigned.

Well said. I was thinking the same. The enforcing part doesn't seem very straightforward to me. And there are 3 parties involved with consignments - can get really complicated.
