It looks to me like a cover from a Famous First Edition.

I don't think it is a FFE cover because there are the dotted cut-out lines on the back cover, which is not on the FFE.  Also the blues for the FFE have a much lighter tone than the original. To me at first glance, the ebay covers seem to be the original from 1939.

The impression I got was that some of the boardies/bidders here found it difficult to keep track of which lots had the 15% BP and which did not.  (shrug)

Well, that's why we all had about a month or more to prepare for this auction.  I managed to write down the lots I was really interested in and split up them up into 2 columns: w/ 15% BP and w/o 15% BP.  With that divided, I would then write down my max for each one with the 15% BP calculated.  Once the auction is live, I'm well prepared to bid.

It would be easier for bidders if CC would split up the auctions and auction all books with the 15% BP in one or two days and then the following days w/o the BP, but it is what it is.

Good grief, I just saw a YouTube video with that Dynamic Comics #8 CGC 4.5 that sold for in the $39,251 (over $45k with BP) in the latest CC auction.  Wow.

Is that book really worth that much?  I'm not familiar with the data price points for this particular book. Yeah I know it's rare, hardly ever does it come up for sale, but I don't get the appeal of the cover if you ask me.  For a Chesler book, I'd rather pay this amount towards a Punch 12.

  4. Yup, that was indeed a beautiful 3.5 copy with the grey colored background which I prefer better than the more common yellowish background. Looks much cleaner and the reds on Spider-Man are deeper red.  If it weren't for staining, the book would probably grade in the 7.0+ scale.  The CGC 5.5 that sold did very well, I must add!

I'll get it started, recently submitted an old label WWBN 32 9.2 for a clean and press and came back an 8.5 :(

I guess my real question (or lifelong regret now) is if I would have submitted this for a simple re-holder, would it have come back with the original 9.2?

If the book was not damaged inside the older holder, than yes

Did you request that books you were auctioning be considered for the CVA sticker or did the consignment director suggest it? Also did that require any additional steps on your behalf?

I requested them to be checked out for the CVA sticker. No additional steps at all. Just sent the books to the auction house and they handled everything else.

  7. Resulted in the same thing as well for me.  Even went on my phone to the comiclink website and sure enough had some spamming pop-up I am not a robot thing happening over and over again.  It was annoying and had to use an anti-malware program to remove the malicious ad.

I'm not suggesting it can't be profitable for a seller who decides to invest in it (nor am I judging those who choose to do it); this is just a natural evolution of encapsulation. Collectors have a tendency to allow themselves to be subjected to this kind of abuse.  We could see grading the grade coming years before and many of us laughed about this prospect till someone monetized it proving the point. I'm just recognizing the ridiculousness of taking this kind of thing too seriously. From my perspective, it's kinda like a sports car driver wearing an STP patch.

I do agree with this. We have our own eyes to judge which copy we would like to put into our collection. There are so many variables because some don't mind having books with marvel chipping or writing and such. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  Yes a sticker from a third party is not really needed to make judgement on what is considered to be a top percentile copy (eye appeal-wise) of that book in that grade. Having tracked down copies with similar eye appeal where one has the sticker and one doesn't, most of the time, the copy with the sticker hammered a higher price. Some folks don't mind paying a premium for CVA or QES stickered books.

My experience with CVA is that when I auctioned off a few of my books and asked if my 3 books would pass getting the CVA sticker, unfortunately only one of them was granted the sticker. The other two I really thought there was a great chance to achieve the sticker because they have as good of an eye appeal as the one. It seems there are pretty strict guidelines that must be met in order for the book get the CVA sticker.  It is not handed out freely no matter how high a value the book is worth.

How does anyone "know" that a book in the same grade presents better than the majority of other copies in the same grade? ...Ouija board? ...Turbaned Swami? ...Drug sniffin' canine unit? (shrug)

Ah, that presumes it's just a sellers advertising gimmick, using the power of suggestion to persuade potential buyers without verifiable evidence to bolster the assertion.

In fact, using reverse psychology it might be just as reasonable to assume the best books in grade don't have stickers. hm

There are multiple examples of books sold where the CVA sticker or QES sticker sold for more than a book without the sticker.  I have experienced this first hand as well when I auctioned off a major lower graded book but with high eye appeal. Of course you have to take into account the 1% fee to have the sticker on the book and see if it is worth it.
