  1. Don't know what to think of this. I was never into the live-action show, but the cartoon was life.
  2. I remember when that happened. Guardians of Galaxy had just come out to REALLY good buzz that week and Marvel was feeling themselves in the way you do when you make Guardians huge and was not moving Cap 3 even though DC tried to plant really the biggest movie they could have on a schedule (BatmanVSuperman) and one of them had to get out of the way. DC did and they were smart to, though I'm sure it was fun for Marvel. It happens all the time but fandom reacts the way you think it will, though usually the less confident studio or project moves even if it is big too (recently Spielberg's Ready Player One and Avatar both moved to get away from the next Star Wars movies)
  3. I bought the 60th Anniversary Edition of a movie that critics killed at the time as well as fellow filmmakers... High Noon. When released, critics were turned off to a "cowardly" cowboy begging for help and finally saved (SPOILER ALERT!) by his bride. Just a perspective to share (please nobody who just looked it up wiki to tell me it was always a Best Picture classic). Try to find a similiar thumbs down movie that turned out to be a classic (In the commentary of The Fog, Carpenter stated critics intially panned Halloween before revision reviews came). The Shining comes to mind. Regarded as a classic now but it deviated so much from the book I think people took it to task. Obviously, iconic director too.
  4. That's me. TY everyone for using such fine packing material and boxes.
  5. I understand it's human nature to want to support their personal narrative but we have to be careful what you may hear someone say or reported falsely and take it for truth That's not even true. Reviews were mixed for Blade Runner, people just didn't go see it. it was not a commercial success at all. It was poorly marketed and went directly up against the release of what would become the biggest movie of ALL TIME at the time. You know what we have learned you don't do now? You don't open when the biggest movie of all time and is in the same genre as you opens. For the record one of my favorite movies of all time lost money. Children of Men. Top 5 easily. Amazing film.
  6. Very much looking forward to this, no chance it surpasses BatmanVSuperman at the box office. Think about how much goodwill Guardians got as word of mouth, and it didn't do a Billion. It could get a nice jump though depending on how well BvS is received, which we won't actually know until the next two weeks. Also, look at the schedule. Sandwiched in-between the new Bourne movie and I think Sausage Party after, which I have a feeling is going to do well. Leading up to it before Bourne you have Ghostbusters and Star Trek. That's a lot of franchises squeezed in that 4 weeks. Not to mention two fairly big animated releases in that time.
  7. In the other manga/anime thread I noted I just started Yotsuba&! IMHO an excellent books for younger kids. Really great stuff.
  8. Second week usually is the tell, but this movie does have some room on its own for awhile until probably Jungle Book takes #1 unless I'm skipping over something. Zootopia is still doing very nicely. Good movie too.
  9. A new Superman movie was in production for a LONG TIME. Also Singer notoriously spent an incredible amount of money on inane details. That said, I didn't think the movie actually looked bad
  10. I'm middleground on it but It's definitely a must see at the movies experience. Imax is incredible.
  11. Worldwide $420+ million http://variety.com/2016/film/box-office/batman-v-superman-box-office-2-1201739996/
  12. I can`t understand the hate as well. My thinking is Superman became so PC with Lois and Clark and Smallville over the years that this Snyder version of Superman really shocked the critics. If we think about it. Most of these critics are PC`ers. This Snyder version of Superman was too much for them. Their vision of Superman is Superman rescuing a cat out of a tree. They're the same reviewers that lambast and down vote every movie to below 30% that has a moral slant that disagrees with their own stubborn ideology and yet those non-reviewers who see it without an agenda give it a 90%+ I came here for angry fanboy conspiracy theories and I have not been disappointed. i've been having a blast with them, andy. it's been exponentially more entertaining than the movie. I don't consider myself a fanboy and I can understand how people cannot like this movie. I just hope if we are judging movies based on content we can do the same with the Marvel ones. Unfortunately those who defend those movies aren't just fanboys but stockholders and speculators Well, I'm a stockholder but the idea that what I post has any effect on the rise and fall of those stocks or my bottom line is a bit farfetched. DC doing well doesn't hurt my stock at all, in fact a healthy DC cinematic universe making quality movies insures the continuation of the era we are living in at the movies. Marvel movies that I hated: Iron Man 2. Hulk. They did reclaim Hulk in a big way w/ Avengers though, and there was more joy in that than anything I've seen at DC. Most of the others are okay but many do have third act issues, which as I've said before tends to plague a lot of comic book movies, though for the first wave of Marvel films, and this was smart, the third acts tended to be replaced by Avengers for all of them. If you think about Batman V. Superman it kind of would have been a great third act for 3 more stand alone films prior. One's above okay (in whatever degree people want to choose): Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Winter Soldier. Those are all incredibly satisfying, have their own genres, and just good sits. I know some will put Iron Man ere and it's definitely just under those for me, but that third act is kind of a let down for me DO I think there is a significance difference between the "okay" Marvel movies and the Man of Steel and BvS? Not a ton actually BUT the problem is that those are Batman and Superman. Antman, Thor, Iron Man, Cap, Hulk, have really no business being as interesting as Batman and Superman, but they are kind of all the same to me, and Winter Soldier is better than Man of Steel or Batman V. Superman and that should not happen. It's very much like Spidey at Sony, which made good money but it isn't hitting whee it should be. At Marvel or not that's the flag character fir it to be making same ballpark as other character, even a little more, is enough for studios to reboot that franchise. When Spider-Man is being threatened by lesser properties (and we are talking about still the most valuable comic book property in the world if you follow the money, Batman is a distant 2nd) it's both alarming and speaks to the work Marvel has done with, let's be honest, their B-characters. We all grew up and know that Spidey and Wolverine/X-men are really the a-list characters of the last 30 years for them from a publishing standpoint. It got so bad Sony is working with Marvel and Feige now. As we sit here, are we really worried about Dr.Strange or Civil War? Because I'm not , and that's baffling because it's Dr. Strange, that's the earned goodwill Marvel has, which means if they aren't good it's going to be incredibly disappointing. Have people seen the cast of Dr. Strange? It's stacked.
  13. There's a lot of posts in this thread so sorry if it's been posted but Google has a way to map/street view Batman's house and lair: https://goo.gl/mAaLNG
  14. They just don't like a movie, and nobody on the planet DIDN'T think this movie was going to make money and I suspect if you see them in conversations regarding movies they didn't like they are saying box office has nothing to do with quality. This movie is the very definition of critic proof, but I am interested in seeing week 2. Rotten Tomatoes is not a single entity it's an aggregate of many different people. Some are better than others, because many were grandfathered in when RT became big but they are the same people who review positively other films people love. I will agree that maybe people have it in for Snyder in a bit of a way people have for Bay (I don't understand people who go overboard on the criticism of Bay), but that may be a natural human reaction of just not liking a style that a guy kind of never goes away from, for better or worse. At the end I think this movie is a minor miracle in that its not terrible but a lot of its parts are and it's a credit to the actors mostly IMHO who many people doubted. I'd love to know who pushed for Eisenberg, whether he already has a Studio deal in place or if someone championed him because if this character is just average it takes away an obvious part of the movie that doesn't feel right. I think he's a quality actor but his take is very odd. Two people are credited with writing the movie, Goyer and Terrio. While I guess nobody but those inside know for sure but it seemed like the talk was that the Terrio story is what we got, or at the very least he cleaned a lot up after Goyer (which makes sense since he he also wrote the Justice League movie being shot soon). Terrio was viewed as "Affleck's guy" because Terrio recently won the Oscar on Affleck's Best Picture winning Argo. The word seems to be that Terrio rewrote the Goyer -script which wasn't good and it may account from some of the jumbled or fractured feeling of the movie, though it could also just be bad editing, and, honestly, rewrites or not entirely uncommon but it did seems like, and maybe because how giant this movie was going to be so the coverage was massive, that Terrio changed the story extensively from what Goyer had. As far as the Nolan movies, Goyer has a story credit but he didn't write either Dark Knight of Dark Knight Rises, Christoper and Jonathan Nolan did, he did co-write Batman Begins with Christopher Nolan. I suspect Nolan is the credit there, he's a guy who also wrote Interstellar, The Prestige, and Memento - he's basically his brother's guy. Nolan typically has incredible input in the films he directs regarding story so it's hard for me to see Goyer having significant input. Nolan movies very much tend to be Nolan movies. I don't want to mess on Goyer because Goyer is a very well known writer and probably among the few that people may know his name, and he's been around for awhile on this superhero thing (Blade), but if you look at his career carefully and see his credits, the guy works and co-writes with unique talents - Del Toro, Proyas on Dark City, the Nolans, everything else is kind of mess (though I get down with Death Warrant ). That said, I think Goyer in many ways was a guy comic movies needed because he was current with his dialogue but I think he then didn't evolve himself in later works. And, a credit to him, he's made enough $ by now he can kind of sit backand produce right around the time where he seems to have been passed by, so win-win. It looked like WB/DC really tried to keep him quiet after he said some really dumb stuff, which he habitually seems to do, though i think the Terrio thing is more the -script wasn't looking good and they want to appease Affleck (a good writer himself), not just because he's the DC Golden Boy now as Batman, but you get the feeling they very much want him to direct multiple movies for them - guy is a big get as an upcoming Director. All in on any Affleck directed DC movies.
  15. I do want to reiterate this though, because while I know we are all praising her, and that seems to be the consensus as well with critics and viewers, it's GIGANTIC IMHO that Wonder Woman is set and ready to go, and people like her. Marvel has not cracked that code of a female protagonist starring in her film and they have a bunch of movies out. Sure, they have Jessica Jones and Agent Carter, and Mockingbird is SO SO fine, but DC threw out what Marvel doesn't have a natural trump for even though they have one of the biggest female actresses in the biz in ScarJo in their stable. I think it's way bigger than even our praises are saying, that Wonder Woman is here, she works, she's gorgeous, and she totally feels in place - a true Trinity. She's so dope. She totally works and she is a potential franchise that looks realized.
  16. Apparently the smile was a Gadot addition, not scripted. I can't recall where I heard that and thus can't say that's 100% true but I heard that, and it's random enough for me to believe it's true.
  17. So if Ben Affleck as Batman was cool and everyone liked Wonder Woman, than the consensus is Superman is the one out of place. Maybe he doesn't fit in with modern audiences anymore? Heck even Tarzan got people in interested with the new trailer. Some female friend I was with yesterday said Tarzan looks cool in the trailer, while Superman looked out of place in the movie we watched yesterday! No I just think there might not be a worst fit that I can think off (IMHO) for a director of a Superman type character than Zack Snyder. I actually really like Cavil, the characters (minus Luthor), and I like them all almost despite the dialogue and the story they are in. For me they are going uphill here and more or less made it not terrible, which is a credit to them because this is a poorly edited, sounding, and written film IMHO. I'm not one of these cinephile geeks so for me to notice the sound quality of something is unusual (last time I did it was the digital version of Winter Soldier via amazon which was mixed so bad that I found out what sound mixing was ) I actually think the cast brought it, and I even think Eisenberg tried too, but I just think this Snyder perhaps fits for me elsewhere, but it almost feels like they turned the DC universe into a place that fits Snyder, instead of bringing directors who are interested in the characters themselves. That's why 300 and Watchmen are watchable films IMHO because it pretty much fits. And look, if this was some kind of DKR one-shot (because badass batman is good here), I get Snyder for that movie (though someone like Aronofsky would be better IMHO) but as a DC universe table setter? I have to admit I'm still not used to it. I'm just not buying it, which is fine there are other movies, and other DC movies coming up. Tarzan looks good, Jungle Book looks better than all of them IMHO. Can't wait for that.
  18. While I understand the angle taken by Supe's father in raising Superman in Man of Steel probably aligns more to a realistic person and father, I always felt kind of bummed out about it because with the change of times I felt like it would make them even better for raising him to be a little idealic in a harsher "more grey" time. In other words I'd probably tell him the same, but I like the idea of the Kents being better people than me and part of what makes Superman, the alien, great(er) is that he ended up in their hands, and not the jaded everyone elses of the world. I did like moms in Man of Steel though. Some of the best scenes are her and young Clark IMHO. I was shocked because that's not Snyder or Goyer's MO.
  19. Estimating at $170 (million) for the weekend after opening day. http://variety.com/2016/film/box-office/batman-v-superman-box-office-saturday-1201739878/ Chance at the 5th highest domestic opening (though all of the others have been fairly recent) - and would have to reach $192 to pass Avengers 2 in 4th.
  20. Yes, love Affleck in here. I don't get the criticism of him, I buy Batman completely. Can't wait to see him pop up in the next movie.
  21. Perplexed why people seem to think a fix is in by critics or other viewers. You may just like a bad movie, a lot of people do or what you like might be something different than what others like. Or many people may just not like this obvious cinematic masterpiece. Regarding fluff Disney pieces, or this idea of fantasy fullfilment, there's nothing overtly more mature about DC's films, they are just more violent and use a literal darker pallette. That's it, they aren't dealing with themes anyone would consider smart or mature, just god wildly_fanciful_statement and typical Batman angst. If people just like fluff pieces Green Lantern would be loved, but, no, that's a piece of mess . I think everyone is "grown up" enough to decide if they like a movie or not, whether they are fans, fans who have outlets, or critics who get paid for their opinion. The idea of grimmer or darker = more mature is the definition of immature and childish. I do think netflix Marvel does it better though than what I've seen out of Snyder. I don't think the film was terrible but in the back of my mind if I come out of Civil War with the same feeling I got after walking out of this one, I will be disappointed and that may just speak to personal expectations, Marvel has merited high expectations and thus far Warner Bros/DC has not, the same could be said of their director. They can pass on mediocre, and this movie was better than that due to the few highlights - for me WW, Dreamscape, and Batman and Alfred. I do think the film succeeds is that I'm going to see a new Batman an Wonder Woman movie, and I will go see Justice League if someone else directs it, though I doubt it will happen. I've seen enough of this guy to know I'm just not feeling his take. I'm interested to see if Suicide Squad will show another side of the DC universe. At the end of the day though this is going to kill and with Harry Potter returning (something WB does exceptionally well) they have to be feeling good about themselves having both their big money maker and the franchises they wanted to replace it on the slate at the same time.
  22. I think that second trailer (I think it's the 2nd one, whichever showed the Abomination) was a major misstep, especially when it's a movie like this where a ton of people are going to actually seek out and watch for trailers. I think this movie is a several percentage points better if two points of this film were not revealed in that trailer. I had a longer response and left it and my PC updated and rebooted and lost it, but I will just say I feel like what seems to be the consensus. I think the two biggest issues, minus if one simply doesn't like the general direction and tone DC seems to want to go in, are dialogue and editing. I think there might be a really good movie in all of the scenes here if cut in another way, and the dialogue is at times baffling but masked by a cast that's actually doing okay. I'm, however, not disinterested in future DC movies. I'm all in on an Affleck directed Batman movie and I'm excited for Wonder Woman, and still pumped for Suicide Squad. That said, if Suicide Squad flops, there could be trouble. I think when I watched this movie I easily could see some of what Hitfix was reporting, meaning executives seeing this movie and questioning it. It's not something you have to look deeply for to perceive, this movie is incredibly flawed rather abruptly. Again, and I know some don't seem to like it, I'm all in on Batman and dream sequences. Given the nature of the way DC has gone (Superman is kind of joyless and killed Zod, Suicide is the choice for the next movie) and just accepting it, it makes total sense that Batman kills. It's kind of like that whole classic "how does Lois not recognize Superman" thing where if she doesn't, in this very real world/setting, she's too stupid for her job and character, and it kind of fits with Batman too, he's too smart to not kill the type of criminals he fights. It's the most efficient way and he's pretty awesome in this movie. Dug him and Irons. I like Cavil too, I don't think this is a miscast movie, I just think the director just doesn't have a lot in the utility belt, he's (if it's him) is not great at cutting a movie, and the dialogue is just not good if you are going to present this ultra real world type of movie. As mentioned before, I love Wonder Woman but I'm a little worried that she's my favorite thing given how little she's in it, relative to how long this movie is. It's kind of like Quicksilver being the best character in Future Past. She's gorgeous. I had to check if this was Zimmer scoring this. It's kind of a hot mess. I guess for me is that I just have to keep on telling myself that I have to accept the joyless DC Universe and then go from there and grade my enjoyment understanding that curve, it's so weird that Marvel is good at that superhero sheen that I attribute more to DC - and Disney is the perfect partner for that. I'm excited for the Justice League, I'm one of those people who does get excited even with those brief glimpses. Sucker here. I think my main concern is what this movie means for Superman because I'm always one of those people who says Batman is the real person and Bruce Wayne is the mask. But in the end here I have questions what this means for Superman an Kent, who I don't think are seperable in that way. It is the humanity of the alien that I think is such an important part of how I enjoy Superman. As I mentioned from jump though. this movie is still going to make a ton of money regardless - I mean while Avenger 2 was not this critically disliked, I kind of thought that was at least not a great movie as well. Because of what it is and no competition looms. I think Zootopia will still be healthy though. Wonder Woman though! I think they could use Dini. Guy to me has written the best Batman stories ever and he gets the modern viewer still due to those Arkham games too.
  23. I think his style fit Dawn of the Dead pretty well, a lifeless, joyless, dreary time.
  24. Reviews are what they are at this point - this isn't the type of movie critics will like let alone enjoy. If you're a comic fan you'll probably be entertained for a large portion of it but it's still a Zack Snyder movie so go in with that expectation and I think you'll have a good time. Can you clarify this? Because Critics LOVE (I'd say overly love) the Nolan films and like many of the Marvel films, and Deadpool.
  25. Charlie Jane, who I think has some fantastic reviews, she had a Transformers one which is maybe the best review I've ever read, though this one is not so in in depth because it's non-spoilers (trailer info only pretty much) http://io9.gizmodo.com/batman-v-superman-fails-in-all-the-ways-that-man-of-ste-1767005085?
