some great advices/tips in this topic. i just bought my first OA a few weeks back and can't seem decide on how to approach my collecting. there's sooo much good art out there that I would like to have but finances are tight. so how does some of you control the impulse to buy? do you just buy art from your favorite artist - like do you just follow one/ two artists and buy a page of their latest project or do you just buy one item from each of your favorite artist? I am currently leaning of the former since this will be the cheaper route since I only have to follow 1-2 artists and they usually have one/two projects in a year. While the latter is more broad and covers multiple artists but the upside is you'll have great a variety in your collection.

I think that is something that you have to answer yourself, and it will evolve through time. I'm normally a very analytical person, but setting artificial rules is not the approach that I take, a lot of it is "feel". You may say that you only want 2 examples from each of your favorite artists and see additional pieces that you like to own (and can afford) or you say that you want to get as many examples as possible and after 10 feel that your needs are met and don't want any more.

Its not the ink bleeding deeper into the page. The chemicals just break down.

As for comic artist, not that I should speak for them, but in the past, before comic art became more valuable, I don't think they care about fading, they just use whatever they can to easily create what they were paid to do (create an image for publication)

Yes, but wouldn't this be the extreme? How long was the piece out in unprotected light? Considering I've seen 50+ year old art with marker and it looks fine there are obviously two sides to the decaying process of the marker, right?

I think there are 2 factors, light exposure does cause fading, but different types of markers have different "speed of fadingness". Some will still fade without exposure to light.

aside from the lightening of the color in the pieces I think they are all in really good shape..also I think to commission anyone to touch a published piece of art isn't a good idea - i think it will cripple the value on the resell because its no longer "as published"

 

 

Something done with a sharpie or some other markers will light and turn brown. They will eventually disappear. I have seen art where it gets so light you cant see it anymore.

 

And Brian said what I didn't want to say since people seem so convinced that markers are fine. Yup, touching a piece of art will cripple the value, but whats the value of a blank page?

Yup, its not bad at all, nothing wrong with spending big money on marker pieces

as for fix, yes there is. It's called commissioning an inker, preferably the original one, to re-ink it.

I remember reading one inker doing it and saying he would raise his prices next time because the work was quite extensive.

Yup, Kz is right, bad markers will fade regardless of the light exposure. Avoid like the plague!

Google will answer alot of these questions, but here is my quick attempt without google

1. Last time I check, Travel Foreman doesn't sell his art. Paquette is on CAF, the rest you can google.

2. Hmm.. I have never seen a DPS that was already not attached when I bought it (I have bought have a DPS before). If I had to tape it myself I would buy archival tape

3. I don't buy off the shelf frames so I can't comment.

4. Art paper? In 11x17? you can just buy artboard, google it

5. Once again, google will reveal lots of people, but the the last time I was looking, I call e-gerber had the cheapest prices

I agree, if I had the money sitting in paypal I would strongly consider it, unfortunately my war chest is quite bare right now

This didn't get as much acclaim as most of Alan Moore's work from the 80's, but I really enjoyed his 2 issue run on Vigilante so I was stocked to get this awesome example

I'm still waiting for someone to define "QUALITY" for me.

Because what I think it means is obviously different than what others think it means

 

Quality is stuff like Neal Adams Batman cover and slashes, Bernie Wrightson Swamp Thing cover/spalshes, Bolland Killing Joke pages, Frank Miller DD/ Dark Knight pages ect.. you get the idea. What did you think we meant?

and you have multiple examples of each of those but of course you can't show it since it violates your rules right?

umyeahwhatevers - many factors drive OA pricing. Nostalgia is a big one, along with a hot artist or writer (which you can argue is also tied into nostalgia). I imagine the same factors drive comic pricing, so I there is likely a relationship. But there are no handy dandy factors that can be applied based on comic pricing, you just have to learn and know the OA market.

Reader - I agree with Maccai 3's definition of double page splash and double page spread, although those terms are used interchangeably alot.

At first I thought I had nothing to add to this thread, since there are few specific pages or covers that I am looking for, I'll just know I want it when I see it.

I just remembered that I once got a great Dale Keown Splash of Marvel Girl/Jean grey from X-factor and I didn't realize that it was part of a DPS. If anyone knows where the other half of the DPS is, let me know! The pair should be reunited!

I think the only difference between preservation glass and museum glass is the anti glare coating. Museum glass has it so pictures can be taken easier, but they are both archival and block out UV light to the same extent

How many ways can you show someone carrying a lifeless body?

How many ways can you show spidey swinging through buildings? After countless issues of spidey, I'm sure for a large majority of Spidey panels, someone can find something similar in an older comic, but it doesn't mean it was a swipe.

Spencer will help if he can, but if the commission did not go through him, I don't see what hounding him will do. Heck, I don't see what responsibility he has, beyond the fact that one of his artist's reputation will be affected.

 

The analogy isn't quite right, but its like someone buying a "broken" comic direct from DC and then going to your local comic store to ask them to "fix" it even though you didn't buy it there.

If I'm in a business relationship with someone who is actively ripping off my potential clients, I wouldn't have a problem asking them to make things right. I definitely think it's in his best interests to help out if possible.

I agree that its in his best interest to do so, especially if sales of Joe's art dry up as a result of this. However, at the end of the day, he wasn't involved in the original transaction. If you ask him he will try to help, but if you hound him, that goes too far.

The penciller might not know who inked his page though (whereas one of the inkers is more likely to be able to identify/remember if they inked the page. Of course Giordano is no longer with us unfortunately)
