    this year. :cloud9:

Some very interesting reading in this thread lately. (thumbs u

I bought this first book from my favorite e-bay seller and he threw

in 23 low grade books. Some of my favorite covers and some

great reading. Thank You Keith!! (worship)

  2. That's a Beauty Jeff and the tape pull nearly looks like a scratch

    on the jeep's grill. :shy:

Great first book you purchased and can we see other members' first

SA war book they purchased if you can remember them gentlemen. hm

  3. Awesome book Keith. :cloud9:

When I first started collecting close to six years ago I was

exclusively buying Marvel SA books and this issue was the first DC

War book I ever purchased about five years ago and it started me

down this path of the greatest genre of books made IMO.

As soon as I seen this issue on-line as a new collector I immediately

fell in love with the book and Russ Heath. :luhv:

It's too bad I paid 90.00 for mine off e-bay as an advertised F/VF or

better and it's only about a VG/F if I'm lucky. :tonofbricks: One of

many terrible purchases off e-bay only armed with a pricing giude

    and very naive.

  4. The new bed is oh so fine....like a NM+ Tales

    to Astonish 48.... :acclaim::insane:lol

We had to buy a whole new bedroom set and upgrade to a king size because???

    a dog.

fill the long blank in with what ever is needed to express; new puppy, puppy sleeps with us, puppy grows, queen bed too small, need new bed, get king size, now need new furniture.......

    King size beds. :cloud9:

  5. Free!!! What th?

Alright, Keith, what do I have to do to get some awesome wa. . .

never mind, don't answer that question.

    Nice score, Fay!

    (grumble grumble grumble)

Thanks for all the kind words guys and that package the books

    just kept coming. :acclaim:

    It's called Karma Mick.

I did a Keith a small favor once and he needed a HG copy of GIC 71 and

even though I hated to sell my copy, I thought what the heck and what

comes around goes around and of course I would only take exactly what

    I paid for my copy.

We DC War collectors have to stick together.

  6. Thank you Richard and Joe. (worship)

I'm receiving a few small inheritances this year from some

land my Grandmother and her Sister were kicked off back

in 1918 and was really hoping to finally buy a GA book later

this year and then I seen this one and fell in love. :luhv:

Hopefully I will be posting a nice Timely sometime in June. :wishluck:

I always hear that warning about GA is more addictive than

any other era and I hope I don't put us totally into the poor

    house.

  7. Great books Shep and you really are the master of finding sweet

deals on e-bay. That GIC 110 is Beautiful. :cloud9:

It was sort of a sad day and I shipped off a package of books that

I donated for hopefully the punishment in some form of Danny

Dupcheck for scamming collectors for years. :(

The mailman arrived and my day changed drastically and my

CGC 7.0 GIC 97 arrived along with another raw book that I won

from my favorite e-bay seller. :luhv:

He might be sneaking the beer INTO the Library....I used to do it all the time (shrug) GOD BLESS...

-jimbo(a friend of jesus) (thumbs u

:o I'm shocked Jim and you seem like such a well behaved young

    man.

Our library is only walking distance away and in between there is

a liquor store and he can barely keep a straight face when he trys

to lay that BS on me. :makepoint:

  9.

I thought this was an interesting list for readers of words. linky

Although I attempted to read a wide range of books during the 21st century's first decade, no single topic occupied more of my time than World War II. Characters on both sides of the conflict burn with complex intensities that few fiction writers can match, and the innumerable make-or-break moments never cease to amaze me. Heroism and tragedy locked arms during WWII, as the very best (and worst) of humankind was displayed on a global stage.

Yet after nearly two decades of devouring WWII titles, I'm not even close to a saturation point thanks to recent work from authors like Rick Atkinson, Jon Meacham, and Antony Beevor. With some difficulty, I was able to narrow my favorite WWII nonfiction of the last 10 years to a tidy list of 10. (I refuse to rank them, however, as any ordering would be heavily influenced by my current mood.) I know I'm leaving some great books out, so feel free to chime in with your own favorites in the comments section.

An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942-1943

The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-1944

If you haven't read either of these installments from Atkinson's Liberation Trilogy, stop reading this post and go pick them up. You'll thank me.

    D-Day: The Battle for Normandy

An honest account of the mistakes and gains made during the largest amphibious invasion in human history.

Ghost Soldiers: The Epic Account of World War II's Greatest Rescue Mission

The story of a daring rescue deep behind enemy lines that Hollywood inexplicably flubbed with 2005's The Great Raid.

The Irregulars: Roald Dahl and the British Spy Ring in Wartime Washington

Before penning such children's classics as James and the Giant Peach, author Roald Dahl made a name for himself as a WWII British spy.

Franklin and Winston: An Intimate Portrait of an Epic Friendship

Meacham received significant praise for his 2008 portrait of Andrew Jackson, but this look at the complex relationship between Churchill and FDR is his finest work.

The Duel: The Eighty-Day Struggle Between Churchill and Hitler

John Lukacs examines the fragility of a stand-off that helped preserve Allied hopes during 1940.

Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway

Few battles can rival the drama of Midway, and Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully own the definitive look at this pivotal clash.

Flags of Our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima

A powerful tale of honor, loss, and the iconic flag-raising of Iwo Jima.

Brothers in Battle, Best of Friends

Thanks in large part to the stunning HBO series, a handful biographies have been published on the soliders of Stephen Ambrose's Band of Brothers. However, none stayed with me as long as this tale of the friendship between Easy Company's Edward "Babe" Heffron and William "Wild Bill" Guarnere.

Thanks for posting this list Adam and I can't wait to show my better

half and see if he hasn't read any of those. Since he's been off work

injured it seems he spends more and more time at the library and will

pass on certain books to me that he claims are must reads.

hm The only strange thing is sometimes I get home from work and

he claims he's been at the library and I always seem to miss those

days the library is selling beer. (shrug)

  10. A Big Kudos of appreciation to capt_comics for bidding

so many times and winning my auction of the DC War lot.

Of course Rick paid immediately as usual and is a pleasure

    to deal with. (thumbs u

Thank You to EsquireComics for taking on this fight to

make this dead beat Dad crook pay what he owes and hopefully

    the IRS gets involved. :wishluck:

Another Thank You to sckao for helping organize the

auctions like he always seems to do.

Thanks to any members who looked or bid on my lot of drek. (worship)

Good Luck Mark and give him hell. :applause:

  11. cheeez. youd think an artists would use photo reference when drawing Iwo Jima flag raising. one image has 4 soldiers, the other's got 5!
IIRC the photo was staged so it would seem that artistic license would be allowed.

I've read the book, "Flags of my Father" and seen the movie and

just checked with my better half and he has also read the facts in

another book on the History of World War Two in the Pacific and that

picture is the second flag to be raised that day. The first one was bigger

and a higher ranking officer from a different Battalion that didn't take

Mount Surabachi came ashore and sent his runner to get the original

flag and they had another flag raising and combat photographer, Joe

Rosenthall just happened to be there and snapped that famous picture

    of the second flag raising.

I guess you could say it was sort of staged. hm

  12. Ahh Mick. :cloud9:

I wish you had more than 1000 posts and seeing your incredible

books is always a treat and your knowledge is always a pleasure

    to read. (thumbs u

Sometimes I feel stupid with so many posts and so much more

to learn and so many more books to collect.

I wish our good friend Andy would post more of his incredible

    books. :wishluck: Please Andy.

  13. Probably not as oddball as you were looking for, but does it count

    if I'm an oddball. (shrug)

    Picture1007.jpg

The inside art is from somone I've never heard of, C. Nicholas.

The first story about Iwo Jima has some nice looking art and

whenever I see a picture or drawing of that Flag raising it sends

a patriotic chill up my spine. :luhv:

A Beautiful book included as a freebie from Texas and I posted

this in honor of a book I'm reading on the advice of my better half.

If any of you enjoy reading good war stories try to find a book

called "Roughneck Nine-One" at a library about a Green Beret "A"

Team's travels, living conditions and battles in Northern

    Afghanistan. (thumbs u

These dudes have big stones and our countries are lucky to

    have them protecting our freedoms.

  14. Here's a nifty upgrade that i recently received from October. Thanks again, Andy. (thumbs u

    GIC-139.jpg

    Great book Larry. :cloud9:

I love the way the 15 cent price is only an outline on that Beautiful

black cover. Did DC do that with any other black War covers? (shrug)

I see the Tennessee comic con you three have going is alive

and well you lucky buggers. Beer and comics with one of the

board's best sellers. What more could you want... besides that,

    you horny devils.

    J/K :foryou:

  15. Good Luck Mark!! :applause:

I wish I had more to give and DD burned me for 120.00 when he

was Comic-Keys and then sent me the e-mail requesting my want

lists to avoid those pesky e-bay fees.

All three items sold as a lot and shipped free to any where the winner lives.

    OAAW 67 Cream/OW serial # 0944264005

Not a bad looking 6.0 with a small dust shadow down the leading

edge of the front cover. Back cover is clean and the book is crease

    free.

    Picture1004.jpg

I don't know how to really grade these and this DC War guide is in

    excellent shape. VF/NM (shrug)

    Comic Book Marketplace # 47 May 97'

I would call this a FN/VF with excellent inside pages and a great

article with Russ Heath and many awesome war covers in bright

    colors.

I will send some funds on payday Mark and thanks for taking this

    on. (thumbs u

  16. WOW! Nice score indeed Fay. Congrats!

    Thanks Jeff, :hi:

I wish I had more funds available that month and many of his

books went for great prices. I hope many of you scored the

rest of his slabs that strange night. :wishluck:

:o What was SA War doing on page two last night?

    Great pick-ups Ty!! :cloud9::hi:

Awesome books posted lately and you guys are going to make my

come back an even slower road, unless you don't mind my mid grade

    drek posted.

  18. To my favorite board members of my favorite thread, I wanted

you guys to know there is a very decent Slabbed GIC 87 in the

auction to help out a fellow board member.

CGC 3.0 GIC 87 in Grinder's Fund Raiser.

This was a gift from Andy or Thirdgreenham with a bunch

of help from Jeffro and I hope this doesn't seem ungrateful

but I didn't really deserve that awesome book. I hope one of you

savy collectors wins it and I've got a freebie or two I could throw in

if a frequent member of the war boards wins it. (thumbs u

Thanks for everything and all the knowledge you guys shared and

with any luck I'll see you around in 2010. :hi:

    :foryou:

PS: :sorry: Jeffro, I know you hate FDQ exits and I will drop by and

lurk every once in a while.

  19. I was going back through this thread re-reading some of the posts and I was wondering does anyone think the last Clink auction was a fluke when it came to the prices realized on some on the books? Fluke being the right group of bidders competing at the same time. Or are these going to be new "standards" for the pricing of these books.

My collection of DC war is relatively small and my budget is very limited. My problem is I am pretty picky about the book's condition. That being said I am looking at the practicality of trying to collect HG DC war books. Sgt fury which I also collect is relatively easy to find in grades I like. Just trying to find the focus which I will get the most satisfaction.

I know HG DC war are extremely difficult to find, But seeing what a few lots sold for on eBay raw lately and the Clink auction results. My eyes may be bigger than my wallet. I know lower grades are obtainable, but I cannot see myself satisfied, as the flaws tend to take my eye away from the art/ cover which is what its about for me. I don't want to get to deep in something even though I like the books, when I will become fustrated that books I want are outside my price range. I am starting to think I got very lucky with the books I was able to buy at this point at the price I paid.

    Brian, :hi:

I hope I didn't create a frustrated collecting monster selling you that

beautiful GIC 118 a few months ago. :sorry:

Great books you picked up recently. (thumbs u
