  1. I think this issue could be a contender for a wash-tone label!
  2. Wow, the Dennis #1 went for $1700+ Not bad for a qualified book. I bet this book was bought by a true Dennis fan who dose not care if the book is restored/qualifed.
  3. You guys have got to check out the bidding war for a bunch of high-grade early STANDARD Dennis' going on at eBay... Here is a sample... http://cgi.ebay.com/Dennis-the-Menace-1-Rare-High-Grade-CGC-9-2_W0QQitemZ130278321118QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item130278321118&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1308%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50 How high will a Qualified Dennis #1 go for??? Most of these issues have married covers, but that is not holding down the price in anyway...
  4. Intersting -- I have never seen any of these boys before. I am beginning to suspect that the greytone list presented here is only the tip of the iceberg!
  5. Here are 2 more books that I would throw on the Survey List: MGA #20 MGA #30
  6. No worries about my graytone parade! I guess the question comes down to how you classify a graytone -- is it defined by the pastel/wash effect of the cover, or is it defined by the actual process the artist used to achieve the effect. I would say that its how the cover is precieved by the beholder. A glance at the cover should answer the question. I would futher go on to say that a comic cover is either a wash-tone or not a washtone -- kind of like a woman being a little bit pregnant -- it either is or isnt! thanks, Bill
  7. Quasi-washtones? HOM #70 MGA #18 HOS #1 (Sphinx) HOS #6 (Scientists & the test tubes)
  8. SA #1 is a retouched photo of a production still from the film DESTINATION MOON. I would say it has wash-tone effects, and should be included on anyone's DC washtone list. Bill
  9. Where's Godzilla when you need him? Here he is! No wait. Here... Or how about here? The Big G inspired many pre-hero monsters (and, yes, I know that the classic Godzilla is really gray, not green!) Bill
  10. What a nice collection...congrats Bill! Would love to see a close-up of the HOM #1! Bill
  11. There are washtone effects but, IMHO, not enough to make the cover a "greytone." Clearly, it's a subjective opinion but it illustrates that there are books that are definitely greytone, others that are definitely not and some that fall into the gray area in between. Would that area be called..."the Gray-Zone"?
  12. Love the colors on those parachutes! Might this be a wash-tone?
  13. Very cool Bill. I should have one to contribute after the holidays. Thanks Bill! How about a hint? Oh. Merry X-Mas! Bill
  14. Its odd. I am always on the look-out for these HG issues -- months and months go buy with out any luck...then just in the last month, I scored about 5 really nice late 50's HOM and TOTU books (all in the last couple of pages of this thread)! There are some dealers out there that know I am interested and are nice enough to send me a line -- and then I haunt ebay regularly and, once in a great while, find a decent book. Bill
  15. Another member of my Dark Age army...Luv that Moreira...
  16. Well, here I go again...This one is one of my new favorite 50s DC Sci-Fi issues. Great Ruben Moreira cover -- and I would say this may be a partial wash-tone to boot -- with great interior art by Papp, Meskin, and some fella named Kirby (there are some really weird monsters in this one). Great book. Lets hear from some of you HG DC sci-fi collectors..I know you're out there! Bill
  17. That is a really nice book. Those, along with BULLS-EYE, this is some of Kirby's best work from the early 50s. FIGHTING AMERICAN is a wonderful parody of Cap -- and compliments the best stuff that EC was putting into MAD at that time. Bill
  18. And yet another Dark Age HOM joins my army...
  19. Newest edition to my collections...River City copy
  20. Some info about Mr Starr.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_Starr
  21. This is one of the best art issues -- stories by Nick Cardy and Leonard Starr... Great Green cover too!
  22. Not sure if this is the correct forum for this, but here goes. I am looking to sell my High Grade SA ADVENTURE COMICS run, mostly from 301-370s ( I also have many from 250s-300, but am not ready to part with those at this time). I would like to sell them as a bunch. I am in the process of scanning and grading each book. I just want to get a concensus on the board of interest in such a collection. Please PM me with any question. thanks, Bill
  23. It's supposed to be Ditko inks and that's best mummy cover ever! That's a great cover. MUMMEX RULES...However, this is THE best Mummy cover of all time (IMHO)...
  24. A "new" Bethlehem has come into my collection...how appropriate for the Christmas season!
